FFXIV: Become a Better Tank with One Concept

Hello all,

One of the most underrated concepts of tanking is positioning for melee uptime. For that reason, I decided to make a short guide on how it works.

NOTE: It is possible that auto-attack range on target dummies in the housing district is different from other instances. There are locations in the game where auto-attack range can actually outrange max melee GCD range. If there is any concrete research that tested this, please let me know in the comments below. Thanks!

Please look forward to my next shitpost 🙂

  1. as someone that plays both tank and melee dps, i have a great appreciation of having a tank that can properly move and position the boss and always try to maximise uptime for my fellow melee enjoyers

  2. Whenever I say I'm scared of tanking, lots of people tell me it's easy. But this is one of the reasons why it is intimidating for me! Because I just wanna be good and make sure my entire party and my healers are having an easy time of things xD

  3. Fun fact, sages kinda also have a melee spell. It's instant cast, so they're always incentivized to stay at just twice the usual max melee range so they can use it for moving and weaving. It's…

  4. Really well put together video! I hope you'll allow me to open a discussion though, the auto attack range in housing districts appears to actually be off! If I were to go to Labyrinthos striking dummy location for instance, my auto attacks are actually out ranging my GCDs interestingly enough, also in P1S when you have to max melee the out mechanic your autos still connect with the boss to my understanding.
This still requires further testing when it comes to boss fights and raid instances but I proceeded to go around every beginner expansion zone and to my discovery my autos are either out ranging my GCDs OR they are aligned with the range of my GCD… so either something funky is happening with housing district striking dummies or this is hitbox dependent. I hope you can test this out yourself and provide further insight to this, because this is very interesting to me too! Appreciate your content and keep up the good work 🙂
