Spot on with your take on people complaining but still buying the games. Destiny was a great example. I was guilty of it too. I finally broke that habit with Destiny. The only way these company’s will stop with predatory practices is when the gamers finally stop buying. But I’m not sure that will ever happen.
Fantastic video. I for one am interested in the potential to make money by playing yet avoiding content creation.
"Play to earn" is fundamentally marketing. You don't make money by playing the game, you make money by owning an asset that is tangentially attached to a game and selling it. No effort you put into the game creates value. And ultimately the money has to come from somewhere, and so far that is other players.
Thanks Brian – a great video as always. I appreciate your thoughts and measured response. As with all things, time will tell how this plays out – its an interesting discussion for sure!
You want a nice word? Here’s two: you’re cute. Lol there will always be critics. Even the negative voices are a necessary evil and natural part of the dialogue… keep up the good work. 😎
NFTs = microtransactions
Happy New Year, I could have a long conversation with you about this but I’ll keep it short. Progress is often painful but necessary, if speculation becomes the main driving force in entertainment it kills itself. No boycotts needed. Greed only goes so far with most people. History tells us that. But, if the medium adjusts itself to provide that entertainment at a reasonable cost it well thrive. Have a blesses year.
So wasn't CSGO kind of like that with weapon skins and knifes? I mean it's not something that belongs in a FF game or any subscription based game at all.
If there was a Ginger Prime shield or shirt glam that I could buy, and the content creator and square enix got a cut. I would definitely purchase that NFT. Regardless if there is an opportunity to make money on resell. It just would be a cool way to support my fav content creator and the game, and display that in game.
If nfts went forward and ff14 got a large cash injection into the budget, what would they do with it? Would they fix the tab target system or would they just blow the budget on voice acting for quests?
Great video as always!
The issue is: This is basically permitting normal players do rmt activities. This also promotes botting.
Lastly streamers will get hurt the most up front. Since streamer Play 2 Earn is based on streaming items that can be DCMA’d, even say an NFT of a streamer taking a screenshot playing FFXIV, could be taxed “kick backed” by SE/Blizz/AMZ. So technically, you guys could even face back taxes on content that these companies can see as NFT plausible or face DCMA deletion.
Maybe Im getting old, but I just cant find the appeal in NFT´s, Crypto, Metavers etc…Dont get me wrong, yeah you can make a lot of money with that stuff (a couple I know invested a lot in Bitcoin in the early days and are now retired at 38 years) without doing anything at all and just waiting and hoping your investment pays out. Im tiered, cant really understand a lot of hype even for games anymore and now this stuff is also there and is making it worse besides lootboxes and p2w stuff. Man, I just want to play fun games. Like before. Im really getting old with 33.
I just want to play video games
You put things in a very conformist way "it is what it is" if the community speaks out against it there is a chance they won't implement it.
Comparing with other services such as streamers does not seem the same, as there is not much scope for speculation in the donations that the public offers to the content creator, the prices of each donation can be clear for the smallest and largest donations, objects sold with limited numbers are also different as they are physical, if I have a limited plush, one in 500, I can destroy it or cut it into parts and offer each to my friends, creating various objects from this limited object, ie it is a ballast in itself.
A digital object like a mount or emote doesn't give me that control. In other words, it's not the same.
If the tokens are around only transactions mediated through SquareEnix, being mined only by it, maybe it's something better, but with no guarantees that it can be something fair, in this case it will have a regulation of the company itself.
Microtransactions still carry some control as they are able to have periodic discounts, be put in and taken out of the store, have receipt, have some legal support in some countries.
If it happens, there are those who want to put money into it, I consider it reckless, but each one does what they think is best with their money.
I appreciate your take, even if i don't wanna hear it. I think you''re right though. We can't stop it; it's gonna happen. I ultimately don't like the false scarcity digital bullshit. Being top 100 in a ranking and getting a digital reward for that is different, since it was an item meant as a reward. However, an item meant for digital sale that only gets 100 codes because they want to drive up price in a secondary marketplace that they control (and therefore get a cut of) is just fucked up and scummy to me. I also don't like scalpers when they get a hold of physical objects, but at least limited runs of physical things can make more sense based on the materials/manpower required for production.
I also hate the mind set that everything you do must be productive. That mindset produces statements like, "An artist who posts their art on twitter must also sell their art, or it isn't worth it." Many people enjoy hobbies that they don't want to monetize because it's just a hobby. The process of selling can be hectic and stressful. It also opens you up to consumers wanting you to make a specific thing or change something, and many people don't want to do that. I've worked customer service jobs. Customers are assholes. The "Do a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life." statement doesn't entice me. I know people who live that way and enjoy their work. I want a job where I make money so I can pursue my hobbies in peace.
As much as I used to enjoy WoW, I didn't have a problem quitting for good when the game wasn't really a game anymore. If FF14 (and other games) turn themselves into an exercise in economics playing artificially "rare" NFTs, then there are other ways to spend my entertainment money on instead of games. I'm just one unimportant consumer but it's my money. I don't care what other people do with their money.
Happpy new thanks for the info 😎👍✌️
I have yet to hear any positives whatsoever about the wow token.
Anyone wanna fill me in on that one ?
I think NFT are temporary and here is why. First off the art or whatever is not on the Blockchain just the token and whatever means of getting to that art. Also the way a NFT market works is it needs a constant funding to keep it going, you get too much on the market things are not going to sell and you end up with the tulips issue all over again. I understand companies needing to make money but FFXIV is already doing really well with it's model so far, making it more free to play would be a mistake. Name a huge free to play game that is still up 10 years later, I really can't think of any. NFTs are just bad and use buzz words for hooking in speculation to try to sell stuff, there is no need for them as systems are already out that do this already and have been out for a really long time. The tech itself just makes it much more difficult to process that's pretty much it.
I've already followed through on cancelling my FFXIV sub for the first time since the release of 1.0. There's no way I'm following Squenix or any gaming company further down this rabbit hole. Also, I would love to see your response to Zepla's take on the environmental impact of NFT creation and transactions, because that video really strengthened my resolve to find something better to do with my time.
As long as it stays cosmetic. If it moves into the realm of player power and/or advantageous drop rates, then I would take issue. Whales will come out on top with most of the rare things anyways.
NFTs is a way to scam players in thinking about making money from gaming. That just slave labour on hours of gaming to collect in game NFT to justify the purchase of a digital collectable to the game you are trying to mine currency from. But games don't last forever, and digital items cannot be transfer to any other game. So when the collectable is gone, your collectable is gone. NFTs will just change all games into, which one will be less of slave labour to play and not about what game I want to enjoy as entertainment. You can sell to the people there is a good side to gaming and NFTs. But to the gamer out there, no matter their situation. This is just the new age of slave labour of the masses for the illusion of buying a digital collectable. That will never have any value as it is not real and can be taken away at anytime for you when a game is shutdown.
Nice to see a lot of people finally realising that square enix isn't their friend. So many people equated square with yoshi p (an individual) and started worshipping them in the same way. Worshipping a corporation like that can only end in disappointment
When it comes to NFT's I don't think you need to change the game that drastically. Just present is as an extra option in the Mog Station, some highly exclusive NFT mounts, minions and glamour gear. And that is all there is to it. Just make sure that the game itself doesn't turn into a pay (NFT's) to play game, because that will actually ruin the game.
I have enjoyed your videos this year. I may not have agreed with all your opinions. Your videos are well done, well researched, and informative.
I had a very, very long post that I've been ruminating on for hours. But since I don't feel at all like arguing on the internet, I'm just going to post the last little paragraph I made. If anyone's at all interested in the rest of my rant, maybe I'll post it in a reply.
Yes, corporations are there to make money. Duh. Everyone knows this. But it's up to us, the customers, to tell them when they're going too far and nfts are going. Too. Damn. Far. Rolling over and just saying "Well, it's gonna happen anyway!" is the stance these corporations want us to have. They don't want us to fight. They want us to let them have their way with as little lube as possible and then pay them for the privilege. This video is exactly what Squeenix wants to see out of its youtuber fanbase right now.
The idea of a video game that i use to decompress becoming a just another job and a way to earn money leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It will get to the point like you stated that if you play the game consistently and decide to take a break from it… you’re potentially losing money, and not just for the time you decide to take off but for all the time you’re trying to play “catch-up” to compensate for lost revenue. The game will become like a bullet train and if you decide you don’t want to ride for a while and jump off, then decide you’re going to hop on that speeding train again… the “catch-up” will just be never ending. Am I wrong in thinking this?
Hind sight is 20-20 Mico- transactions and NFT may help the game we don't really know until the red tape gets unravel Companies Need to make money to keep a float. We might not always agree or even full understand I hope that F.F. 14 stick to it's core beliefs that has made me love this game since Day 1 Also can you elaborate more on NFT as a whole I feel I am missing something.
Thank you Ginger! I am so glad you made a video on this. Personally, I am fully supportive of this change, I believe it is the next step of evolution for gaming, giving ppl a chance to earn some money while playing.
Recall the days where gaming by Adults were frowned upon? People used to think gaming is a waste of time, ruining ones life etc. increasingly we are starting to see e-Sports, content creators making a living out of gaming. These are all positive change that helps to dispel the notion that gaming is useless
many people complain about anything they feel is not right to them but if you look at it like this you have a better reason to grind for things yes playing for fun is a good reason. but if you can say grind a dungeon or grind crafting for things to sell and earn money for that. then i say hell yeah let me grind hours for some bucks. money has always been a big motivator for people. the people that complain i feel are people that don't like change or cant see pass things or look on what we can do to play to earn.
I really dont mind the fact that i could earn money form playing games other then streaming. and i like the points you made ginger prime.
NFT's an interesting system. It is not one I would want. It's only "good" when the environment it's in is relevant. When people loses interest it's near worthless. There is also the aspect of free manipulation from the controller of the NFT not the pseudo-owner of the NFT, but the company that is selling the NFT. Why would you want to buy into something that isn't physically real, and can be easily manipulated (quantity, price of the NFT)? I just don't understand it.
Awesome video and explanation.
With the recent changes to tax laws for this year that involve selling of goods on pages like Mercari, PayPal Goods & Services, etc NFTs would most likely be included in this set of laws resulting in companies having to hire companies or individuals to generate programs to create and send all of the tax forms as these would be income generators.
After the fiasco that was Diablo 3 auction house I hope NFTs don't enter the space.
Time will tell. Either I won't engage in this or I'll find a way to capitalize in order to diversify and expand my means of passive income in addition to further investing that income.
Gotta have a solid economy for the up coming virtual worlds
Tits. Tits is a nice word.
It might happen but it also might get banned by government entities. There is a whole lot of copyright infringement going on right now with lots of money so I wouldn't be surprised if the government starts getting involved.
They need to forget this nft nonsense or they will fail dead ass there’s no way to do this successfully without making every game similar In it coding so that said nft can be moved from game to game…
SE just doesn't want to learn at this point.
One point you made with NFTs was that there is a digital asset. If they decided to sell NFTs in an MMO, then shut down the servers – could this lead to a lawsuit since they are taking away a monetary asset and not just a product. I'd be on the side of they can't shut down the servers without compensation for the NFT's. However, that would need to be settled in court.
Nice Comment <3
I agree a lot with what you're saying. Honestly, we've all dreamed of the day where we could potentially make(and contribute in some cases) money while gaming on our favorite game(s)! Anyone who denies that is lying to themselves, and just look at Twitch, Youtube, etc., already giving that to us but on a different(sorta) scale Example: Twitch Prime Rewards/Drops. NFTs could be a really good thing if implemented the right way for FFXIV; or any type of game(or system in general), it just depends on how it's implemented and the longevity of that game's life cycle(s). Play to Earn is a future majority of gamers want imo, it's just how it's implemented. If it wasn't a thing Gamer's wanted, then we wouldn't have Twitch, etc.
I dont mind reselling something, but I would not like it be an intangible currency/token in order to trade. I'd prefer something like what Steam does, where you might receive an in-game loot chest drop from playing the game, then you can sell the contents on the Steam Marketplace for USD/EU/RUB etc. Thats partly why I stopped mining crypto when I started having to pay for electricity: at any moment someone could say "this token is worth nothing" and there is no paper/gold/physical item that can disprove that it is worth something
great take on the subject I really wish it wasn't so but this business generates a lot of money I can't see big business backing away from that, what I hate personally is the fact that if you might not want to partake in it they may very well put some invasive thing in your favorite title instead of making some new IP that frustrates me the most.
i respect this but i did drop blizzard and destiny if darksouls becomes the only game i play for the rest of my life so be it. I cant support nfts just like i cant support blizzard
As long as game "A" doesn't tell me that I need NFT of "X" to play "Y" content, then they can do what they want.
Nope youre right gamers are sheep and will keep playing.
Apparently I am one of those who will quit if FF14 shift into NFT thingy as I am willing to pay monthly subs to enjoy to game rather than have to compete with NFT thingys just to get my game going, we have similar pay to win mmo already without NFT involved. Its a fancy method to get more money from us for sure somehows.
