Fashion in FFXIV vs. WoW: Glamour vs. Transmog

There sure are some stark differences in the fashion of Final Fantasy XIV and WoW… 🙂

P.S. I do truly hope that WoW can turn it around, especially after the announcement of the Microsoft / Xbox acquisition. I spent 16 years there and would like to feel good about playing it again, but in good conscience I can’t support Activision Blizzard until they create a better work culture, start treating their employees with respect, and start listening to their players.

  1. I like having fun when I play a game. And if that would mean going out dresses like a clown or fighting with a half chomped ham or a fish… I’d take it. Both games are ok but FF14 jump is so weird that it overtakes the wackiness of WoW mogs.

  2. When we go with ease of use, of course WOW is better. But when it comes to options and abilities… I wish FF would improve on Glam system, removing limit on amount of items, allowing players to put glam dresser inside the house and being able to put items like mogstation purchase items and wedding dress/costumes to armoire. And main thing – allow us to put colors to different elements differently!

  3. One good thing WoW does for glam over FFXIV is more glam plates and if you collect a new piece of gear, it automatically saves it in your dresser so you can just toss the item right away.
Edit: oh yeah different weapons like maces/hammers options if you are melee. Although that derp music can also apply to some glams when walking around Limsa haha

  4. kind of hate transmog
i remember the time when someone was full decked in T6 and i was like 'shit that mofo must powerful'
the terror of seing a S2 warrior with enormous shoulder aiming your ass. rogue with warglaive ? man this match will be hard!
we had a little of that with the mage tower especially in the beginning . a monk tank with the brewmaster weapon ? 'that dude must be good !'
there is no more 'memorable' gear because nobody know/saw the look of it cuz it get instantly transmog

  5. You can actually dye your armors in FFXIV, which means the gear combinations you can pull off become way cooler and more varied. In wow, you gotta pray the Default colors and textures can actually mesh well, and thats a major turn off.

  6. wow engine is just too old
they still use ancient tricks that were genius move in 2003 but have no place in 2023
all they can do it make models with more polygons and heavy textures.
even if you take FF models directly into wow engine, it would look like $#it

  8. I mean, you are taking the worst of the absolute worst that WoW has to offer here haha. So many people, including myself, try to make the fugliest tmog they possibly can. But WoW does have some insanely amazing looking armor, tho it's unfortunately mostly from past xpacs.

FF14 just has it all tho, and everything looks amazing so…

  9. I’m sorry, but uhm…I gotta have to disagree on this, like I know that FFXIV is way better (which I agree), and the dye system is miles better than the shitty recolors Bliz put out, but putting the clown gears on and compare it to glamour sets and such feels…really, really cherry picking. And also, I still like the transmog collection system way more than the Glamour Dressing.

Though in my personal opinion, I probably like SWTOR’s mog system the most, yeah it has a lot of store outfits and such and most of the lvling gear looks bad, but god being able to Transmog and switch transmog anywhere, having multiple transmog/glamour sets that you can swap anywhere and anytime (unlike in FFXIV where you need to be in a big city), transmog sets can be account-bound and can make multiple copies and not to mention being able to unify color to the same dye just by dying the chestpiece…quite hard to top it, at least to me. No offense to the FFXIV glamour system, of course, sorry if it offended anyone.

  10. Wow would benefit with armour tints used over tier set recolouration per difficult, tier sets could have more intricate designs the higher the difficulty etc but any colour for use

  11. say what you want about 20year old sets in wow, but the transmog system itself is FAR superior, a permament unlock once you acquire the armour across your characters is great, no 400/400 that you can't even get enough space for a set for each role. also wow has some good sets, they're not all as bad as you showed, stuff like druid cata sets, the dark shaman mop set, more recent ones are trash but when the game was good, the sets were as well, people actually knew names of each of the pieces because they wanted it as well and could tell it apart (something I don't feel exists in ff14 beyond shop items like maid outfits)

  12. In all honesty. I love FFXIV but the transmog system is waaaaaaaay better then the stupid and limited glamour system. Only thing that makes the glamour system better is that you can dye your gear but other then that the transmog system is far superior. And even wow has amazing sets. But if you put the worst of wow against the best of ffxiv you don't really make a serious comparisson.

  13. wow has some cool sets but theyve been kinda flopping a lot of it after wotlk. the t3 sets are still some of the coolest looking sets and they really have trouble of coming up with sets that look better than them.

  14. OK, but I do like that WoW just adds everything you aquire to your transmog library automatically, so you don't keep running back to the inn to use the armory or stop to make some new glamour prisms. And the armoire storage space is getting mighty low for me, and I'm not even much of a collector. The "technical debt" of 1.0 keeps showing up, making adding space much more of a task than it deserves to be.

  15. The only thing i cared for in WoW's transmog is having the prettiest shoulderpads, I hated the outfits in general cause they didn't look like outfits, they looked like shirts where you just put on with a dumb png plastered onto it, I was never satisfied with the belt and the pants especially were awful, and since I played a worgen I HATED how boots were. With final fantasy 14 the glams just feel really good to use, the dyes have meaning to them and I can fully express myself with who I am as a player.

  16. I mean.. I prefer ffxiv over WoW any day of the week, and I harbour no love for WoW, but I think if you represent silly weapons from WoW, you should present silly weapons from ffxiv as well. There's a lot of amazing looking and cool weapons in WoW as well. We even got a literal clown suit, goldsuacer weapons, etc etc. WoW doesn't have any fortune as they can't dye their gear, and I'd say that I'd look silly with my current gear setup without glamour on 😛

  17. The actual mechanics of transmog are so much better, being able to collect and save every appearance you come across over the 400 limit of the dresser, WoW gets a point for that. However, with a lot of older sets looking very similar and just recolours of robe X or chain coif Y, not to mention the 100+ cloaks that usually just get made invisible, so the collection does get bloated. The ability to transmog different shoulder pieces in theory should be great, though not being able to dye shoulders makes it look more cobbled together than not, so half point for trying. WoW does have some standout sets and pieces, though novelty items are very rare (pink party hat for example.) the ability to fully re-customise your characters face without paying gets a point as well; having to Fantasia if I wanted to change just eye colour for example would add up.

FFXIVs gear on the whole just looks so much better. Robed characters have so much more depth to their pieces, for example. The limited space of the glamour dresser makes you think on exactly what pieces you really want to keep, so while the technically infinite expansion of the transmog system is superior, the glamour dresser almost feels like a RL wardrobe where you put your favourite outfits, and those saved items hold a little more personal value. FFXIV also gets a point for the sheer variety of glamour items, not locking itself into the high fantasy aesthetic and allowing creative minds to go to town, if they can hunt down the right glamour items. Edit: dyes. Being able to coordinate your gear by recolouring is a tremendous boon.

If you were able to mash the positives of both systems together, it would be fashionista paradise.
