Duty Recorder – FFXIV's Deeply Flawed Tool

Did you know Duty Recorder exists? Have you tried it? It’s honestly fantastic. But it has a huge, gaping flaw – SquareEnix only lets you use it on specific duties. Maybe they’ll listen to reason if enough people start raising a ruckus about it on forums and reddit (hint hint).

This is my first time making a video essay! Let me know what you think.

  1. Hey! If you really want SquareEnix to listen up and reconsider fixing Duty Recorder (or adding more features for video recording in general), speak up! Make a thread on the forums, or /ffxiv reddit! Raise a ruckus, because that's how the Devs listen!

  2. just a thought and I imagine it's probably actually more work than I can imagine, but it could be a purely client-side feature with the server load being offloaded to the players that choose to make use of the feature in the form of demo files ala games like DOOM or QUAKE. Games need to make use of demos more often!!!!

  3. Why did they load the workload onto the server in the first place? Why can't the recorder be on client side? I believe these things exist in Total Warhammer and they did it right. I know it's a different genre but the system is there.

  4. I have been silently biding my time because all I want is to take cool shots of cool bosses and I feel like I'm an anchorite on a rock in the ocean awaiting the Rapture that may never come in my lifetime.

  5. I came in, curious to know what the deal was with Duty Recorder. And I leave having learnt a good deal I didn't know, but I did not expect that fine editing and machinima (is that the right word?) alongside this. Great work, Denmo!

  6. I agreed and disagree with your point. Yes, the functionality is just amazing and SE should, need to work on it and put it across the game. However, like you said, Yoshi-P talked about the sheer amount of bits needed to make just one duty recordable. It’s not for nothing that their will be a stat-shrink. We can hope that the lower stat will let more space to be allowed to duty recorder (more duty per patch, g-pose, speed up, etc.). Like I see it, they resimulate the ENTIRE duty with AI doing the same key output. It’s even worst when you add speed or g-pose.

  7. thats just the sad part aint it…. the devs love to implement new but shallow content unless enough of a voice is made for it and duty recorder's voice only belongs to content creators which, even though is the biggest voice, is the the smallest niche even more so than hardcore players

  8. I honestly wrote the duty recorder off as soon as it came out since it was so limited in the duties it could record and all inside of content I'd never see (no static/no raiding). If they opened it up across the board it would be a godsend.

  9. Godddddd I remember being SO excited when this was first announced for byakko. I was so disappointed when I saw how limited it is, and it's insane how limited it still is even now years later. It's so sad… It had so much potential and they just left it in the dust.

  10. I think it was something they implemented without considering the kind of impact it would have on the servers. one of those "oops" features

I genuinely don't think we'll see any updates to it again as long as they're still using server infrastructure from over ten years ago

  11. SE does seem to have a long history of starting up new systems/frameworks/additions in the game and then letting them suffocate to death. Looking at you, lord of verminion. Maybe we can trade that in for precious server space to make the record work, or just offload the recording data onto the user, though considering the game's spaghetti code that might come with is own issues.

Anyway, housing and their stance on FFlogs. Like c'mon, even YoshiP records logs.

  12. I always wanted to use it but yeah all these problems stopped me. But as someone that doesn't really have an easy way to record due to money and lack of skill this would have been great.
