Developer Relationships in FFXIV vs. WoW

A trip down memory lane to compare the relationships the devs have with their players in FFXIV vs. WoW.

Check out The Popoto Pub FFXIV Podcast I just launched here: https://youtu.be/A-mEPtgDHzk

Clips from Asmongold, Preach Gaming, ZeplaHQ, Jesse Cox, Larryzaur, FFXIV Live Letter, and various WoW Dev Q&A’s. Give them all a follow!

P.S. I do truly hope that WoW can turn it around. I spent 16 years there and would like to feel good about playing it again, but in good conscience I can’t support Activision Blizzard until they create a better work culture, start treating their employees with respect, and start listening to their players.

  1. We're kinda giving merit to Square Enix as a company by proxy, but let's not forget the reason XIV 1.0 was a massive piece of shit was precisely because they as a company weren't that much different from ActiBlizzard today. If it wasn't for Yoshida-san, we'd still have a terrible game with no autoattack, no jump and disabled forums so we couldn't complain about it, among other, more egregious things.
Many people find off putting how much XIV players idolize Yoshida-san, but he and his team are single handedly proving the company that if you take care of the game and make it good and fun to play it's going to be much better both for the players and for the company itself, rather than throw in the highest graphic nonsense and hope for the best.

  2. Hey, it is refreshing that Yoshi and the devs address every issue and communicates with the players. Refreshing that they are not afraid to apologize and explain the problems so we can know what is going on. Refreshing that they respect the players. That the game has a story that is worth to fight your way through. That the early and mid-gameplay is as fun as the endgame content and thats all without the soulless grind.
WoW Devs are on a high horse, full of themselves for no reason anymore. The game became a grindfest. The story… let's… let's not even talk about WoW story anymore. They are systematically retconning the lore into a nonsensical mess just to fit the new bullsh*t in. And when the players rise their voices to show how unhappy we are with the direction this is going to…. we are just treated with more bullsh*t.

Sometimes it feels like WoW is getting torn to shreds on purpose. It is painful. Even when the entire community is yelling at them to change things because it will be a disaster on the long run, they just ignore it and run headfirst into the stonewall what everyone tried to warn them about.

  3. Ion saying "ebb and flow of specs" is not even a joke, wow players have a fucking spreadsheet how some specs have been constantly real good for several years while others are just soo trash that you should not bother with them.
Like, I have to admire the guy. I could never get soo much out of touch with reality, dude must be injecting psyhodelic musrooms each hour.

  4. How does a Japanese game developer who don't even speak English communicates better (even with a translator) with CCs, while devs who does speak English have trouble making clear sense?

  5. This video is proof alone of why FF14 got the award for "Best Community". Not only is FF14's community friendly to one another, but the developers and staff actually play the game and interact with its community and streamers. This is why they deserve that award.

  6. Not just Blizz lately it feels like if an Eastern Dev was actively hostile towards other core playerbase that would come as a shock to people. Whereas when a western or specifically American based developer is open and positively responds to player feedback and suggestion that is what shocks people. I've never seen another industry where you are rewarded for being openly hostile towards your own consumers besides the western games industry. You had Blizz devs calling people sexist for not liking Sylvanas, Bioware devs publicly celebrating the death of Total Biscuit and Naughty Dog calling you racist if you didn't enjoy TLOU2.

  7. Imagine if every expac a Job was unusable in high level play. "Sorry, it's Machinist's turn to be the worst DPS job." Lmao, can't believe that's intended design in WoW
