  1. Personally, if you want to try Black Mage (which I’m assuming since that’s apparently the class you gravitated toward in character creation) level it up now. But I do agree that starting the game as a Thaumaturge is a very bad idea. Picking up Thaumaturge is a painfully slow and boring start, which is VERY bad if that’s your first class in the game.

This year I brought my best friend into the game, and he’s always resonated with mages and sorcerers in fantasy games. So I suggested he play Thaumaturge.

    THAT WAS A MISTAKE.

Leveling Thaumaturge combines with the slow pacing of ARR almost drove him to writing off FFXIV as “not his game”. I had to buy him a Black Mage boost so he could pick up (and fall in love with) Red Mage.

  2. I mean, i leveled THM/BLM all the way through MSQ to the end of ShB. Yes, it was slow going. Yep, I was pretty awful at it. lol. But it really wasn't that bad. Anyone can play the class. Optimizing for endgame content is a different story, but it's still something a casual can play.

  3. Since it was brought up in stream, several of Pint's points on BLM abilities are outdated: namely with Enochian. It's a big question as to why he included activating the ability, especially since it was changed to a passive for Shadowbringers launch. However, his points on BLM being the hardest of the jobs to learn is true because the long casts make adjusting more difficult. As you learn a particular fight, you start pre-planning where a leyline might be best placed for maximum duration, getting a feel for when you can greed and snap around with teammates using your mobility moves, or ensuring that you're always inching forward to a particular location ahead of time so you don't need to sprint over and not be casting.

  4. Black Mage is alright, although it is not my main caster. My main caster is Red Mage. Pint is correct about how RDM plays, and the burst damage phases are SO worth it. Getting those gauges filled up to 100 allows me to use the Enchanted Melee Combo –> Verflare/Verholy –> Scorch –> Redoubtment. With 1 use of Manafication between uses, I can do that burst damage combo 3 times in succession. Or I can simply use Manafication at the very start of a fight and get 1 use of the burst damage combo immediately.

He's also not lying about RDM's ability to rez multiple people quickly and save runs from falling apart. The RDM Dualcast ability applies to all forms of magic, and Verraise falls under this category. A quick Jolt on the enemy followed up by an Instant Rez. And if worst comes to worst, you can still use Swiftcast to Verraise someone instantly followed up by another instant Verraise. It is balanced by having a not-so-great Vercure spell. While Verraise is super useful, you won't be doing all that much healing with Vercure.

Anyway, I love playing Red Mage with the feeling that Healers can rest a little easier knowing that I've got their back. I can get them back on their feet in a jiffy!

  5. Yea i still think they should Swap Thaumaturge and Rogue as available starting Classes. The main reason why Rogue is NOT an available Starting Class despite Ninja being an ARR Job is the fact its the so far only Job (besides Blue Mage) to be added with a Patch, not an Expansion or the base Game. Still, its so much easier to pick up and get a first feeling for the Game, It would probably be better if people were able to pick that up right away and get Thaumaturge at 15+ once they can leave their respective City States and have seen enough to have at least a first impression of the game. Actually speaking from experience on that, i first picked Thaumaturge as Starting Job, hated it, got Rogue once i could get to Limsa and did ARR with that XD
