AST was a beautiful abomination indeed. It was underwhelming to alot of people at launch, but they were overtuned to the point of outdoing the other healers in healing and utility. The poor devs ended up tearing their hairs out trying to balance the other 2 healers with it to the point where they had to delay a 4th healer class JUST to find a workable compromise to allow that new healer to exist for 6.0.
The real question is are healers in FF14 fun? And in ShB they aren't. They're all spam 1 button white mage clones. It's fine if one healer is braindead but making them all like that sucks and makes me worried that sage is going to be the same thing

One thing that always annoys me when people talk about parsing and meta is that it completely disregards your own preferences and just looks at the raw numbers. I don't play that way. So I'm happy that around the 28:00 mark you guys mentioned exactly that.
My static really doesn't care what job I bring (saying that as an AST main since HW) even though the toxic minority loves to dictate that stuff. I'll never understand. At the end of the day I want progress, yes, but not at the cost of fun. 🙂
I really hope we revert some of the homogenous job design back. As it stands now healing/tanking is way too samey. But that's just me. ^^

Started in 5.0 and I was definitely of the mind for the longest time that scholar was weaker than the rest of the healers and scholar was my main. But now I definitely get a huge sense of satisfaction when I can make massive shields or keep up dps while using fairy oGCDs. But absolutely agree with you when it comes to running out of gas and trying to recover your whole party gets low.
Any chance you’ll make an in depth scholar guide? I feel like all the videos I’ve watched only really tell you what the scholar skills do, and not really go in depth of what you do in certain situations. I would love to hear your take on it

@53:10 I have 100+ totems on Diamond as SCH and have never seen any hate against playing the class (Primal DC). Sure the DPS rotation is balls but I'd rather not play with crazy elitists versus enjoying the class. @54:55 Managing multiple DoT's sounds badass. Maybe someday we'll get more. imo you vastly overstate the importance of cure 3 likely due to you seeming to be a Sch main. people kick Sch due to people going whm+diu Ast. a Whm needs to carry more of the healing load with a sch healer than they do with a Diu Ast which is why Neutral Sect is likely the most busted healing cooldown the game has ever seen. did Sch struggle with Aoe healing in ARR? yes but that wasnt it's role. Sch had a role in ARR that no longer exists due homoginization. spot healer and tank healer,though generally speaking i think shields were more effective in ARR than they are now.
I was literally at work when I heard "so people thought AST was OP when Heavenward released?" I spat out some coffee and yelled hell no at the same time. 😅 Those were dark days as an AST main since its release.
I main white mage and have mained white mage since ARR. AST is alright, but it's not that great IMO. Scholar is awful. Might as well let Scholar collect dust. Regen > Other healing jobs.
This changes in PVP. You are kind of forced into AST, because scholar is awful. And white mage can't compete with the free spells lol
How do you believe they'll balance the dps casters? As of now, it seems like most teams just want red mages and summoners, with black mage seemingly being left out.
A bad habit coming from MMO players is the whole: "What's the best ____? What does the most DPS? What class should everyone play? What class should no one play?" Are we playing a video game or a number simulator? Any comp is capable of clearing any content. You can take the "lowest dps" job and have trash gear and still out-dps "high damage" jobs with BiS gear if you enjoy your job enough to play it effectively while adhering to mechanics. Play the job that has a style that make you happy and excited to play moment to moment day after day. If you have fun with it, you'll practice with it more and you'll outperform everyone who is picking jobs based off of numbers. Meanwhile, you'll be having more fun with the game as a whole. As a guitarist, people ask me: "What's the best guitar for a beginner?" My answer is always: Whatever guitar that makes the new player reach out for it day after day because they are in love with the way it looks or sounds or feels. Same thing with video games.

When the first tier of Heavensward came out, even thought many healers had been pushing for dps since second coil, it was still most common to see 1 healer purely focus on healing and 1 healer purely focus on DPS. Groups were both healers were actively pushing high dps and speedkill groups were extremely rare. While even in Gordias AST was good for groups with 2 healers DPSing and speedkilling, those groups were so rare you pretty much never saw them.
Scholar supremacy
5.0 healing is so freaking boring compared to 4.0 and before that. I HATE playing healer now through story content. Casting Broil on my SCH 10,000 times a week is the lamest design in any MMO on the market. FF14's decision to homogenize healers into the same class with different skins ruined the experience.
