Addressing the FFXIV controversy | Reacting to GenjiGear The Truth About Streaming Final Fantasy XIV

Today I am addressing the FFXIV controversy going around Youtube about being a content creator in the FFXIV community. I am reacting to GenjiGear’s video “The Truth About Streaming Final Fantasy XIV” which is something I feel I needed to weigh in on.

@genjigearlive Thank you for your honesty and inspiring me to be a better creator. I would love to run content with you in FFXIV ❤️

Please go support Genji and send him all the love!

  1. It's certainly understandable for a person to not like MMO-style gameplay. For me, I've always said 14 has the best story of any media I've consumed, but calling it "the best game ever" is probably a stretch for anyone who isn't a primary MMO player. Also, we need to get you on the NoClip documentary.

  2. As long as it's not a video game I'm avoiding spoilers for, I'm always down for whatever you put out. You should do a youtube poll with other games you would be interested in and see what gets votes; see what might appeal to the most people. As much as I love your FFXIV stuff, I know that fear of burnout is real for content creators, and I just as much don't want you burning out because you feel like that's all you can make.

Also, I was crafting flying chairs today. If you want one, let me know. I'll hold onto it for you. -Xylus

  3. I'm just going to say this before we get into my comment… No game is flawless… even Final Fantasy XIV. I may sing its praises to the highest of heavens, however even I know its got flaws.

    Now then…
Variety is one of the hardest content forms to do, especially if one game you do a video or stream on is the main reason your channel blows up.

Usually the best action in this case in my opinion is to just do what you think is the right move. Sometimes the hard road is the right one, nothing is ever easy after all in this game of life and hobbies. I blew up on my twitch channel running giveaways for SoulWorker, got almost triple digits on viewers in peek hours… only to have it drop to 1-2 viewers whenever I try to play something else on stream, or even stream SoulWorker without doing giveaways. Not really the same issue as the video went over, but the experience is similar imo when it comes to the drop in viewership.

Despite this though, I'll watch anything you upload! I've enjoyed hanging with ya in the discord, helping ya with questions, and running content with you in FFXIV. If you approached me one day asking if I'd be willing to check out another mmo with you, or a co-op game, I'd be asking when and where while already downloading it (hint hint that one game you mentioned in dms… already had it downloaded and waiting to play moments after you mentioned it lmao) You've been a treat to hang with, and I look forward to many more times in the future, no matter the game! Even podcasts! xD

  4. "Greatest game of all time" and "the greatest story in all of media" are incredibly stupid things to say about anything. I love FFXIV, it's one of my favourite games and stories ever, but I would never push somebody to play it under such a ridiculous expectation. You're basically trying to make it weird for them and setting them up for disappointment. Just encourage them to try it out and let them explore it on their own terms.
That said, I've seen people do the opposite, where they warn newcomers that "ARR is a miserable slog, it's not fun, just blitz the MSQ and get out of there as fast as you can." That's another way to ruin the game for somebody. By all means, you can explain that ARR is kind of dated, and things definitely get better later on, but don't let your sales pitch for the game be either "Greatest Game of All Time" or "ARR is Trash, You Won't Like It, It Only Gets Good After 400 Hours."

  5. Maybe just pick a day & have that be for your variety uploads/streams? Then move those suckers over to a dedicated playlist on this channel.
I'm not sure if diverting viewers from a growing channel to another channel is the way to go about it. Maybe a fellow content creator can provide some advice on that 🤷‍♀️
Either way, this was a good video. I enjoyed it 👍

  6. Thanks for reacting to my video, watching back I am so embarrassed because of how much I rambled in this video. Happy to talk more about the game on discord or something sometime if you wanna talk more about it or make a video talking about the things you wanted to discuss more like the pressure of making videos.

  7. The greatest story in all of media? I've nerded out over FFXIV lore more than most people and even I think that's a hard sell. Multiple stories come to mind that absolutely stomp on FFXIV's MSQ. haha

But it's good to hear from both of your perspectives!

  8. The other thing that gets talked about a lot is that once you finish the MSQ the views drop off dramatically. Xenosys talks about it all the time and Pyro is the best example of it. Something to also consider when you talk about views and longevity.
