It’s not a fun game at all. So clunky, outdated and boring. Play lost ark, actually fun to play.
Alliance raids are catch up mechanics. They come with odd number patches and drop gear between tomestone gear and raid gear.
Hildi actually unlocks a few trials which includes a few blue spells, 2 minions, 1 barding and an extra minion in the hw storyline and a few emotes
It's called Stockholm syndrome.
Out of universe, the Hildibrand questline is the developer's test bed for testing new facial animations. And they just go wild with the silliness. You can kind of think of it as a PTR for animations. It's genius actually. People don't even realize it's just a test bed, because the storyline is so silly that the just excuse everything that looks off.
FFXIV players are indeed spoiled, sometimes ungrateful, oftentimes too defensive of the game when they don't have to be. But that's just the less savory side of the community. A minority, of course. All community has its toxicity. It just manifests in different ways depending on the culture of the community. In my experience in wow it's been judgement, aggression, and competitiveness. FF has cliques, defensiveness, and gatekeeping.

It's a nice break. There's no rush to endgame, everything is relevant, and you get emotionally invested in the NPCs.
I tried FF14 for a while. Just wasn't my cup of tea. Combat being so centered around gcd's seemed so slow and clunky. Small zones with overpriced travel. Main cities so convoluted to navigate you need a guide or be a veteran to know. But hey it's got a great story.
In the x.0 x.2 and x.4 patches the only way to get to max item level is by clearing savage content, in the x.1 x.3 and x.5 patches the alliance raids are added an they drop a weekly item that can be traded in for items to upgrade your armor and accessories with the weapon upgrade item being added near the end of the patch, they also make it so these items can be bought with the hunt currency. its a really good system because because for hardcore players getting max ilvl is a matter of skill and casual players its simply a matter of time. this also has the effect of giving people a reason to populate those queues so other people who want to do alliance raids don't have super insane queues.
We are peons indeed haha, I never digged FF though.. not a fan of anime shit which makes WoW also standout with it's quirky graphics that runs on any potato pc.
WoW will still imo be the best mmorpg I have ever played, and yes it's a torture seeing WoW in it's current state!
Lots of people are doing Palace of the Dead all the time, but not for some achievement or accomplishment. Simply put, it's the most time efficient way to level a dps alt up to level 60, as they tend to have long queues for dungeons. People are constantly queueing for floors 51-60, to the point where if I queue those floors as a dps job, I never have to wait longer than 2 minutes for it to pop. It's pretty sparse in the higher floors like 100+, I agree, but Palace of the Dead is still very active in general from people leveling alts.
Actually like the Alliance Raids, Palace of the Dead and Heaven on High are catchup content too. We use them to powerlevel (our non-main) classes when we get tired of regular dungeons (sounds unlikely but sometimes we do) or run out of side quests and MSQ to get exp to level. Of course leveling isn't that much of an issue these days but back in the day Quarrymill would be just crowded with people trying to catchup to what level the MSQ blocked them, believe me I was there lol

Coming from many years of playing WoW, IMO I agree with you 100%. It's actually a relief to "escape" all the bloated systems, drama, gating, hype-disappointment cycles, etc. and just enjoy a well-established, extremely well-developed game with plenty of engaging content from silly fun to hardcore challenges to keep me busy for a very long time.
Crystal tower is an alliance raid. Anything that requires more than eight players is an alliance raid.
I agree with every point you make. ffxiv has been a godsend and has revitalized my love for this genre and, more importantly, reminded me of what made all the other final fantasies that I played so great: the story. ffxiv's story is captivating and does an excellent job of driving a narrative while simultaneously making you feel like your character actually means something in the story and isn't just a camera lens for the audience. our character feels like they have agency and the world feels alive compared to the husk that is WoW. (also: elezen. mwah, perfect, love em. Aymeric is bae)
despite how much i loved my manually leveled up nightborne and her shiny heritage armor, or my demon hunters before her, or the deathknight before them (or the blood elves or the tauren…)… i ultimately gave up on wow when i finally had enough of the same regurgitated story and after deciding the game wasn't fun for me anymore. As a casual, I never experienced endgame except for expansions later when doing transmog runs or via watching videos on youtube. the most fun I had during my time in wow was when playing a class/race that was pertinent to the story that was being told = deathknight during wotlk, demon hunter and nightborne during legion.
So fun story about the devs. In the first Shadowbringers alliance raid, they dropped a pair of leggings that you have DEFINITELY seen people wear. The infamous 2B leggings. Well, one of the unique effects of said leggings is they make your character's butt bigger. Needless to say, they quickly became the most popular glam item in the game.
However, an update came and players saw that their buttons were no longer getting enhanced by this item. So a whole bunch of players ended up complaining at the devs about getting the big butts back. Next update, the butts were back with the dev team profusely apologizing and saying it was a bug.
It's such a dumb, inconsequential thing, but the devs understood that this was a fun feature that the players enjoyed, so they fixed the issue ASAP. It's a silly story, but it puts the dev and player relationship for this game in perspective.
It should be said that you may be thinking the Palace of the Dead (potd) and later on Heaven on High (HoH) is a very niche part of the game, but you'd be surprised.
the real reason you dont really seem to see people queuing for it is because its matchmaking is across all servers within the datacenter, and furthermore most players will not do the first 30 floors of the dungeon just because its exp rate isnt as good as floor 31 onwards. Once you unlock the floor 31 checkpoint you really start to see how active this gameplay system is as most new players and players leveling their alt classes will frequently do potd (lv60 below) or HoH (lv61 to 71) to level very quickly.
potd especially has a respectably large community due to its potency at bringing lv1 players to lv60 within a few mere hours, plus it has the added benefit of unlocking every skill, ability and spell upto lv60 from lv1 while within the dungeon crawler as a means to test out your class.
Furthermore beyond Palace of the Dead (lv 60 below) and Heaven on High (lv61 to 71) we also have the Bozja Southern Front (lv71 to cap) hosting its own community for rushing to lv90 with little effort. Its such a convenient and beneficial system born as a byproduct of what was at the time of its inception just a fun dungeon crawler, but now you can realistically reach lv90 in any secondary class within the week even as a casual, giving one to pause and question why wouldnt you do it at all.
Fun fact: Hildebrand comes from the end of 1.0. The devs knew the game was going to be scrapped, so they decided to put in some quests just to test facial features and a couple effects. That's why Hildy makes all those silly faces.
Just a point for context though. You "refugees" are going through nearly a decade's worth of content, while the veterans have already played those content. We also had a content drought from April (5.5) to December (Endwalker). Granted, it was between a patch and an expansion, not like WoW's 9.0 to 9.1 patches. But just don't be surprised once you've run out of "fresh" content to do.
Hildy is from 1.0 and added by fan request and has continued to live on due to fan reception.
