A Single-Player Review of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

In this video, I’ll be giving a comprehensive review of the base game of Final Fantasy XIV, titled A Realm Reborn, as well as the patches the precede the games first expansion from the perspective of a solo-player.

  1. As a solo player I felt my best option was to join the server my real life friend has been on since Beta, I prefer not to skip content either so I just have him steamroll the ARR dungeons with me. I can't wait until Shadowbringers and the NPC groups 😅. Only criticism as of level 30 has been the forced grouping.

  2. Very detailed summary and covers it fairly well. I am going to note, however, that with the story squish that occurred, they also now give plenty of Vesper Bay aetheryte tickets as quest rewards that teleport you directly to Vesper Bay for free, making the travel time to waking sands significantly shorter.

  3. Great review. I just subscribed so I can catch your thoughts on Heavensward and here's a few tips

Every starting job is very different except for tanks having a few similar actions and melee DPS' having a 1-2-3 rotation.

You should try out different classes if you begin to get over leveled and/or during the pre-Heavensward patch quests

MSQs give you a bunch of Vesper Bay teleportation tickets to get to the Waking Sands but I'm not sure which quests

If you want some experimentation with a DPS class, try Red Mage or Dancer because their class mechanics are more based on RNG

As a fellow controller player, I suggest you look into activating your W Cross Hot bars so you dont have to shuffle between hot bars in combat

  4. Only thing I would point out about this review is that you're not required to play "perfectly" during the grouped content like dungeons and trials, the MSQ only requires you to do those in normal or hard difficulty, where your performance can be far from perfect and you can still succeed. You won't be forced to do Extremes or Savage for the story.

  5. An excellent video essay, in particular I would recommend at least the first half of the review to players who are unfamiliar with MMO's in general. You do a great job outlining not only the mechanics of FFXIV, but also explaining the highlights of MMO's in the form of boss fights and dungeons. I also agree very much with your criticisms regarding the base game (Realm Reborn) being fairly shallow, although as you mentioned at the end of your video, I (and I'm sure many other active players) can attest to the jump in quality for the game across the board in the expansions. Boss fights, music, characters, and story all get a serious upgrade and make for an incredible gaming experience. It speaks volumes to see that some of the monotony of the base game is made more than worth your while when the player gets treated to the excellent gameplay of FFXIV that follows Realm Reborn.

Anyways, I thought this was a very good review. Keep up the good work!

  6. In short, levels 1-50 are dog shit. After the free trial, you need to buy the full game and pay a subscription fee. It's really annoying that the free trial is made more boring with almost zero dungeons for parties, or raids… Well, I just passed level 20. Even while trying to form a party, there was nobody at all to join or form one with. There are world events in purple circles. I did those, but was doing the party/raid event solo. It's very humiliating. EDIT: To be fair, I eventually got into three dungeons, and one primal (dungeon with just a boss). I think because these parts of the game are so old, it became a joke. You could afk or auto follow a party member and complete the dungeon. The tank literally pulled the entire dungeon to the last room and we killed them all with AoE attacks. Every dungeon was literally skipped to the very end. These dungeons were beyond jokes, and beyond too easy. When I say too easy, I mean that I could have afk/auto followed a player and been successful while taking a nap. One more thing, the story was interesting; but ruined by huge unnecessary paragraphs of nonsense explaining how they were sorry for being shit people, and how awesome your character has become. Even the voice overs felt bored, and had long pauses between dialogs that made it awkward.
