A Beginners Guide to Tanking – Final Fantasy XIV

Tanking dungeons in FFXIV is easy… There I said it. I’m making this video as a psa for new players. I know a lot of people have anxiety when it comes to tanking or healing in mmos. I also remember a ton of new players back in the day picking paladin because sword, only to be devastated to learn they had to tank.

The first thing to know is that holding enmity or aggro is super easy. All you do is turn on your tank stance and hit things, that’s all you need for them to hate you. As long as you keep hitting them they will keep hitting you.

Now with that out of the way we will talk about how you are going to tank in ffxiv. The most common strategy is to pull everything from wall to wall and burn it all down at once. When you first start, maybe pull a few packs at a time until you feel comfortable. When pulling trash make sure you are using cooldowns as needed to help your healer out. Most of the time the healer will expect you to pull everything, you can ask if big pulls are ok if you think they might be new but most of the time they will tell you not to pull big if they can’t handle it. If you try to pull one pack at a time most people will keep running and then you will be alone and sad.

Now sometimes you may run into overly helpful dps that will run ahead and pull stuff for you. I know you will be tempted to watch them die slowly but you are a tank and it’s your job to protect them. Most of the time if you ask them nicely to stop they will.

Pay attention to your enemy list, If all enemies have a red square you’re good they hate you. If its anything else, hit them, they miss you.

When it comes to bosses just follow mechanics the same way you would as a dps. There are 2 main differences though. First if you get some red caution tape looking stuffing swirling around you it’s a tank buster so use a cool down. The second and most important thing is you are not playing dance dance revolution stop spinning the boss around if mechanics don’t call you to move then be still, your melee dps will love you.
