The first arm of Alexander, eh? Here is Alexander's actual lore rather than his actual creation myth, because the actual creation myth will have spoilers (even this lore has spoilers, so spoiler warning for the raid series?)
"Rising from the waters of the Thaliak River, this mechanical fortress is the essence of a primal. Aside from its main trunk the colossal construct rests on two massive "arms" of steel, giving it the appearance of a clockwork giant. Events suggest that Alexander is capable of manipulating the flow of time, allowing its controllers to "correct" mistakes in history, but without further investigation, there is much to the primal that remains unexplained."
Alexander is a recurring summon (as someone pointed out already.) It originated in Final Fantasy VI as an esper obtained from Doma Castle. Each iteration is tied together by several things: It is a holy summon, appearing as a mechanical giant similar to a fortress. Each Alexander also has their signature move in Divine/Holy Judgement, though at this point, we have no idea if it can even USE its move, it mainly seems dormant.
In a fun twist, this Alexander makes up the ENTIRE "HUB" of the raids by its sheer immenseness alone. The entire raid is about cracking the mystery of Alexander and how it works, while stopping the Illuminati in the process. This is also the last normal raid series to have the Dungeon Crawl tiers, as from Stormblood onwards the raids will solely be boss rushes.

Additional comments;
0:59 – Machinist Durmin! He looks so good in that outfit.
– I see the proper pronunciation for Idyllshire is used here. Wonderful! (I used to make the same american "Idle-shire" pronunciation before the recent expansion so I feel it.)
6:26 – This gives good information about the Illuminati, or the Blue Hand. Durmin has seen their fanaticism before, but he's gonna learn a lot more about how depravable they really are.
7:21 – Roundrox my daughter.
8:53 – Ah, another Au Ra, who has gotta be someone's waifu… I don't care about her much lmao
10:18 – Fun fact, this is morse code. Throwing this sequence through a generator translates it as "A L" (presumably the name of the primal.)
14:44 – Someone's waifu returns (Mide), and it seems this will be a Machinist-style raid! Lovely!
16:01 – Alright, this sound amuses me as someone who dabbled in RPG maker (It's "Up4" in MV by the way.)
20:04 – Sky pirate Durmin!
20:43–20:55 – Okay i'm crying, this is literally gold.
31:02 – F. Silly gobbies, should have filled the room with boomdust rather than just your pockets.
37:05 – Fun fact, these machines are the mount you get in A4S. It's one of my favorite mounts because of one thing: CLINKCLANKCLINKCLANKCLINKCLANK-
51:06 – Speaking of Savage, the savage tiers for Alexander are downright BRUTAL. Living Liquid here is just one of those brutal tiers, which wiped many raid parties and statics. In fact, Savage is so tough that people actually complained about how punishing it is.
54:52 – My favorite rhyme, and one I made up: "Opposites attract, Same pushes back." You have to learn about how magnets work to understand some of the fights in this game.
58:30 – Just to clear things up, Hydaelyn is not only the goddess, but the world she the created. This is probably the first time the world's name is mentioned.
Rhythmsounds of Alexander are pleasing to uplander, as are tongueflaps of smallgobbie Roundrox!
Wait. The illuminati is canon in ffxiv? I don’t know how to feel about this.
God, even before I actually started looking at FF14 stuff my friends would share music and as such, Locus has been my favorite of the boss themes for a veeeery long time. It's got such a satisfying beat to it and it's so good and mechanical. And now that I caved to peer pressure and am playing, I'm basically just like. Soon. Soooooon.
Ah, Alexander. Not the weirdest of the FFXIV raid series so far, but I think that's mostly because of how difference Coils is from literally everything else.
51:30 Getting to fight Pepsi Man always brightens my day
I am seven levels of amused that the raid parties are just giving Durmin the true Alexander newbie experience of leaving him with all the drops for gear that is sorely outclassed now lmao.
god I love Alexander. A to the L to the E X Ander, Gobbies gonna rise up boom like thunder.
Alexander raid music is so good!
"Bubble and the Big Machine" sounds like an Indie Game darling from the early 2010's
ALEXANDER!!! ITS MY BOYYYYY!!!! I love these raids so much.
Something noteworthy here is that Durmin is safely able to do these raids at level when the Bahamut raids are quite dangerous in similar conditions, this is because of the introduction of difficulty levels into the raid series. What Durmin is doing now is commonly referred to as Normal Mode but there is also a Savage mode, which is supposed to be closer in difficulty on release to those Bahamut turns and tends include extra phases compared to Normal mode. This prevents people from being locked out of doing the story content if they are intimidated by hard content. And they should be as Gordias Savage is generally regarded to have almost killed the raid scene…
There were two big problems with these Savages
1) The fights were really hard. Living Liquid (AKA Pepsi Man) is still considered a real strong fight, but it was a huge wake up call to a lot of groups going after the content. And Manipulator was even more brutal but is regarded as not fun, especially because it was not killed for 3 weeks solely due to gearing. The fight was solved but there was just no way to get the DPS to kill the thing.
2) The devs took a huge vacation after the release of HW, the team had been working nonstop since the failure of 1.0 and they could finally slow down development for a spell. But because of that there were not a lot of people around to balance the game. The team has admitted that this is the one tier where they did not completely playtest the Savage fights due to these constraints. Not to mention that HW on launch was had balance issues, some jobs were not in a good place.
Luckily things reached a comfortable place with the balance by the end of Alexander, but it was a learning process.
– awww yeah one of my favorite FF14 songs!
– Durmin rocking the Revolver Ocelot (revolver ocelot) look today, neato
– the cat is a Primal, I'm calling it!
– the Gobbies mask look so boopable
So, idk how this is going to sound, but I love how visually solid Fuyu's outfits are. I have no idea how it works, but I'm glad it does.
pssshck Commenter is always here for gobbie antics!
Hurray! XIV conent is back!! Durmin seems refreshed after his vacation <3
Best holy summon hype!!! Let's go Alexander!
I like how the floors and wall are all tilted, it really helps sell the space
I am pro mouth covering
Fun fact for you, Dan: you can also leave the instance via the Duty menu (it’ll ask if you want to abandon duty, but you’ll get full credit so long as you’ve completed the duty).
14:14 So let me get this right, Cid basically had an Enigma Machine that could not decode what was basically Morse Code without the Illuminati's crystal…
I'm really glad to see this synced instead of unsynced, as you miss out on a lot of detail when the fights just end immediately, and with normal raids in particular, they're very doable like this!
"Is uplander seeing it? Giant of iron, rising from river?"
Me immediately: RISE WITH ME, RISE WITH ME, RISE WITH ME, RISE UP!
Banger soundtrack time.
Fraeswys here – don't worry, I'm not quite sure how to pronounce it either! Very fun to be a part of one of these finally, was impressed with how smoothly most of these fights went between coordination and gear and somewhat knowing what we were doing. Excited to see how well the geese cut through the actually slightly harder tiers of this!
Oh… I usually put lyrics for the songs of this fights… Uh… I forgot. Anyways today is my birthday so 6.2 drops right on it
Here is the lyrics for "Locus" and uh… I'll put the lyrics of the other song "Metal" in a reply
Seeking the peace of reason
Sheep in a peaceless season
Reason to keep believing
Waken the beast who's sleeping
Let go this destiny, you're caught in a trance
Ever marking time inside a dream, no sign of advance,
You see, the mortal coil we serve is taut like a spring
Step back! Two-step, two-step, two-step, one two three
Our world's a fantasy, no more than a test
Ever feeding off the fallacy creating this mess
Deep down inside this bleak machine with all of the rest
Break free! Two-phase, two-phase electricity
Time turning up the volume
Time turning on us always
No time enough tomorrow
For turning back to where we began
Twenty-two sectors tested
Fragments in one direction
Celestial noise detected
Delirium unsuspected
Static tuned in to reason
Time in the aether deepens
Transmissions blink uncompleted
Seven two three two three…<send>
Arrested destiny, alone in a trance
No escaping from this waking dream, no hope for advance,
You see, the mortal coil we serve is naught but a spring
Unwind! Too slow, too quick, too much to believe
Your world's a fantasy, you've failed the test
Ever forging all new fallacies creating more mess
Directly through this bleak machine, with all of the rest
DC! Dying, dying, electricity
Falling back right into the system of
Falling back on all that's erased
When fighting back right out of this system
Means falling back right into this space
Yes, falling back right in with the system
Who'll see you falling back to the end
When falling back is better than simply
Falling back into pieces again
Silent steel breathing, breathing
Memory writing, reading
Error! Repeat deleting
Radicals flowing free and
Energy slowly seeping
Suspending all disbelief in
Synergy with our being
Synapses fire in three, then…
The gobwalker from the second fight is available as a mount reward for clearing the savage version of the fourth fight (which you need to do as blue mage to get the morbol mount!)
I gotta say, I absolutely adore your gobby voices. They're delightful!
My immediate thought when Dan announced a temporary career change was "Oh… Give Durmin a gun! Do it!"
I'm glad to see at least on some level, I was on the same wavelength as Dan.
It's Chel and rejoice fellow geese in the return of our snack primal
"The weird cat again"? You'll have to be more specific. You should know by now that all cats are a bit weird, strange, even elderich.
And nobody explain the cat, he'll pet that cat when he comes to it.
This episode reminded me of Nier
This has to be my favorite raid music so far! I love it to bits xD
20:52 here we see an accurate representation of Dan's soul
