Is Final Fantasy XIV a Real Final Fantasy?

In this video, we explore the “realness” of Final Fantasy XIV and the extent to which the game should be considered a must-play title in the Final Fantasy series. Is Final Fantasy XIV a borderline Final Fantasy game, or should it be considered central to the Final Fantasy canon (making claims like Emet-Selch is the best Final Fantasy villain valid)? If you’re only open to a “yes” or “no” answer, I’m afraid the video will be sure to disappoint you, but if you’re up for a somewhat nuanced discussion, you might end up enjoying it. Do you think Final Fantasy XIV will have a profound enough impact on the Final Fantasy series moving forward that familiarity with it will result in players being able to experience and interpret future Final Fantasy games in more interesting ways?

  1. Final fantasy XiV

Has more references and inspirations from every final fantasy title before and after it than i can actually keep track of
Has Ivalice as a location and Rabanastre as a dungeon in it
    Has ever classic summon
The jobs are inspired directly from Final Fantasy Tactics series
Follows the ever so frequent Crystal theme in Final Fantasy
    Hydalin is a literal Crystal
Sounds like it is an actual final fantasy
I dont know why this is even a topic

  2. The game is numbered so it's a "real" Final Fantasy. Same with XI. End of story. XVI is being developed by the same team as XIV and that probably wouldn't be happening if it wasn't for the success of XIV. Yoshi-P went from being just a producer to also being an executive at Square Enix's upper management.

  3. Wonderfully crafted video!
Unfortunately, for all my love of XIV, it's hard to consider it a real FF only for the temporal issue. If it can't be played, for example, 20 or 30 years from now, then no..
    Thx guys <3

  4. this way too deep for just saying "yes, it is a FF game" some points are kind of irrelevant no matter what side it takes. so it does make this video very redundant, but some were valid points however, just to say "yes it is" its like one of those essays you do in college. you clearly don't care about the topic the prof. forced on you, but you have to pick a side because its your grade on the line, so you pick the side that has more proof or more content than not. then point out very uninteresting and redundant points and make it as long as possible to make it seem like you did work. this is what this feels like, not saying "bad video unsubcribe" but it is bloated with points that are kind of not relevant. it plays like a FF game, it references other FF games, and it brings its own FF story along with it, that's it. "just because i have to pay a subscription does not make it a ff game" is an example of a point that makes no sense, i have not come across anyone saying something of the like probably because its a piss poor excuse to not consider a game part of a series, therefore that point is very irrelevant to the video, among some other ones. i get what uh, red? or blue? tried to do but meh could have been shorter. i love you guys doe keep it up, just keep it relevant a tiny bit more.

  5. It's hard for me to pick a side tbh. Other than the fact that I haven't exactly played FFXIV. However, for all I have seen, i believe it is a real FF game. It has a compelling story with tropes present in most FF games. It probably just blurred the lines because of the presence of MMORPG elements.

  6. I still have yet to play FFXIV but I hope to one day. Time is definitely the biggest barrier for me to play. If you ask the broader FF community most tend to exclude the MMOs but I think it’s fair that these games are numbered titles that are just as FF as any other FF title.

  7. In the end the only ones that can say what is or isn't Final Fantasy are the owners of the IP, so if SquareEnix acknowledged the game as a main line FF then it is, regardless of what the fans say or think about it.

So even though this was a really well thought video and I liked it, it was a it of a waste of time in my humble opinion.

BTW, just found this channel and I love it, thanks guys!

  8. I remember this debate for FFXI back in the day as well. Hironobu Sakaguchi is the one who made the decision for XI to be a MMO, so yes an MMO can be a real FF.

Sakaguchi also highly praised FFXV and its director Hajime Tabata for rekindling the Spirit of FF, which means seeking new challenges. Trying new things and seeking new challenges is what makes FF a FF.

I think when we start getting too hung up in the details of “has to be turn-based” or “has to have a world map” or “has to have set characters” is a problem overall with the fanbase and why the term “Final Fantasy Disease” exists.

This isn’t a direct reply to your video or anything, just a general reply to FF debates in general.

Though I am not a huge fan of his, I think the YouTuber 'The Night Sky Prince' put it well when he recently said that FFXIV captured the 'spirit' of FF better than basically all of the other recent titles. It successfully blends classic series archetypes (elemental crystals, a magitek empire, various summons) with an original storyline (Eorzea, the Scions, Ascians, the 13 shards) and a tasteful sprinkling of direct lifts from prior entries (Crystal Tower, Rabanastre, Gilgamesh).

  10. It's a fairly labored argument to try to claim that FFXIV isn't a FF game in any respect tbh. Also, all games eventually reach a point where they are no longer relevant, but as long as they have a good story and other play elements, they will remain enjoyable to replay. I don't think it needs to be anymore complicated than that. And whether or not you enjoy one FF game doesn't mean you have to like them all.
