NEW FFXIV PLAYERS WAIT! DONT SKIP THE STORY!

We take a second to read a Reddit post about a WoW Ex-Pat who shared their story about how they regretted speeding through the MSQ. I’m here to encourage new players to avoid the same fate and to enjoy the journey because the good stuff starts from the beginning!

  1. Before anyone says anything, this is not my attempt to impose upon new players the idea that their entire experience may be ruined in the game by not playing through the story. There is another wave of players coming in and all I want to do is offer some advice that can potentially enhance their experience with the game and their time inside of Eorzea. If you end up skipping the story and just don't like it, ultimately that's totally fine and their personal choice. However, I want to offer a fresh perspective on what kind of mindset someone can benefit from coming into this game for the short term and the long term.

Also here is a video by Kougaon that explains what that insert in the video was all about lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFie73O-HE4&t=1s

  2. Imo the combat is slow at beginning is to help you grow muscle memory on your job. At raiding difficulties if you spend 1 second look at your bar at the wrong time its a death..

  3. If they're fans of Final Fantasy or rpg games, this is easy to do. But if they're from games that doesnt really have a 'good/enjoyable/memorable' story like 1st person shooters, racing games, sim games, WoW, mobile games, etc, the transition into slowing down and READING the dialogues is gonna be rough.

  4. The issue when you tell a WoW expat to enjoy the story, their idea of a good story in an MMO was old WoW. It's the base of their understanding of what the story in an MMO is capable.

Of course they would rush through MSQ. Their instincts are to reach end game as that's where the story that matters start and the real game begging.

No amount of advice would block the Pavlovian reflex instilled into them by Blizzard.

  5. yeah~ skipping some part of the cutscene is like skipping the quiet part of movie n books to just see the action parts, you loss a lot of content.
For example if you do this for a action thriller, n only see the gunfight n car chasing. on the final battle you see the protag fighting someone but he was someone the protag trust, u be confuse as F because missing those "boring" part u miss the hint n overall reveals of said villain.

that being said, since you can rewatch the cutscene n depending on the situation example family emergency or server maintenance is in 10 min n the cutscene is 15 min long. i think it is a valid reason to skip.

  6. I don't know if it's my ADHD but I'm around level 52-53, free trial and I started skipping through voice acted stuff and what I saw as superfluous dialogue rather early on. I think skipping is a good thing in my case. If the story gets in the way of me enjoying the game, why should I have to suffer through it? I read enough to get the gist of it and I'll probably end up watching a story recap or something down the line should I ever continue playing this game. I'm currently at the quests after ARR, and holy hell are they boring me, ARR was alright, nothing groundbreaking, but right now it's a slog so I just work on blacksmithing and stuff instead.

Don't skip too much though, just enough to understand the story.

The FFXIV community makes it seem like the story is the most important part, and it probably is to a lot of people, but if it makes me actively not want to play the game I'd say just skip when you feel like it, especially when you've already figured out what's happening.

As Chad said in the video, grab a cup of tea and basically play at your own pace whether that be quick reading and skipping or immersing yourself in the story. I'm hoping that the story eventually grabs my attention and I slow down just a bit but so far nothing's sticking to me, but hey the game is awesome regardless!

  7. another important for not skipping cutscenes is it can give you tips on your quests.
also saying "skip the cutscene" in Duty roulette or PuG is an extremely taboo word you can get criticized by your party even worse if it in alliance raid
