How to Catch Zalera in FFXIV

In this short guide, Fruity Snacks goes through how to catch Zalera, the Big Fish of Zephyr Drift, in Middle La Noscea.

Hole: Zephyr Drift (18.0x, 22.0y)
Bait: Rat Tails
Conditions: 9-14, any weather
Folklore Book: None
Min Gathering: 290.

📋Window Prep
Arrive to Zephyr Drift early and cast out with Rat Tails. Depending on the method you go with, you’ll have different Surface Slap targets (sort of*).

If you are Lv.100 and plan to use Modest Lure, catch and Surface Slap any ! bites.
If you are not Lv.100, or just want to be a little lazy, catch and Surface Slap an Angelfish.

Once you’ve slapped something, use Chum, then wait for the window to open.

*technically, if you are Lv.100, you can slap basically anything and the Modest Lure method will still be marginally better than the Slap and Chum method. HOWEVER IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT BOTH OF THESE METHODS ARE (PER MY ESTIMATES) BASICALLY EQUALLY EFFECTIVE, with the Lv.100 Modest Lure Method being only a SUPER smidgen better. Like, “juice might not even be worth the squeeze” better.

🎣Lv. 71 to 99 Method “Slap and Chum”
Once the window opens, cast out. If you get a ! or !! bite, use Rest, Chum again, and cast back out again. Repeat this until you get a !!! bite – where once you do, you’ll use Hook to reel in Zalera.

🎣Lv. 100 “Modest Lure” Method
Once the window opens, cast out (shocker). Use Modest Lure up to three, or until you see “You have a feeling your next cast will be a small-sized fish.” If the fish that bites is a ! or !! bite, use Rest, Chum, then cast out and repeat using Modest Lure. Repeat this until you get a !!! bite – where once you do, you’ll use Hook to reel in Zalera.

👀Fish Eyes
Fish Eyes does work on Zalera, and makes it available at any time of the day if it is not 9-14 (it’s normal window). Both of these methods are effective with Fish Eyes, and so just use them while the 1 minute Fish Eyes buff is active. This is more GP intensive, and will absolutely have downtime waiting for GP to regen.
