Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

  1. One caveat about the Equip Recommended gear: It only searches for gear in your Armory Chest, not in your inventory. There may be a setting to change this but this is how it works for me.

    Otherwise: Good video!

  2. There are a few handfuls of side quests worth doing sooner rather than later. Some offer emotes or cosmetics you can't get any other way. They won't be blue since they're technically not essential. I like doing the side quests while I'm in queue as a dps and starting in SB they sync to your level within range(60-69 for SB & 70-79 for ShB).

  3. One thing to note about job changes that newbies may not grasp rightaway and it's kind of important.

When you equip a different weapon (from inventory or armoury chest), it only changes your class eg. Equipping a bow makes you an Archer not a Bard, you need the relevant job stone equipped as well to become a Bard.

The game actually handles this very poorly by having both the class and the job exist as separate things you can swap to, and this has led to forgetful newbies doing high level content without a job stone. The game also doesn't block you from doing content beyond lv 30 as a Archer or Gladiator, etc.

Veteran players will eventually save gear sets that have the job stone equipped by default and just swap gear sets rather than swap weapons. But newbies who juggle multiple jobs definitely need to remember equipping the job stone.

  4. I want to add one caveat for equip recommended for tanks, it's quite significant for a new player- while leveling, if you have a disciple of war (Physical DPS) piece that is higher than (maybe equal to, even) a tank-only piece, auto equip will choose the DPS one. If a tank isn't mindful of this they can lose tons of defense until the game swaps to the "x of fending, y of maiming" system and then proceed to get slapped hard in dungeons.

Otherwise it's a convenient awesome button all around, yep yep.

  5. If you're gonna replay the whole msq on an alt you're gonna have so much fun finding all the moments when they foreshadow things, sometimes WAY before they even happen, it's mind blowing sometimes!

  6. Also I’d advise taking a moment to watch a UI video and tinker a bit. The default can be pretty atrocious and turn off new players with a lot of clutter.

To that point also, depending on player preference, it can be a good idea to go in and customize nameplate settings and other PC visual effects. I turn off everyone but party members so they are easy to track during larger content like 24-man raids and Frontlines.

  7. If you like the lore, do all the side content. Do all the classes. There’s so much to see AND certain characters will appear in multiple quest lines and you’ll be rewarded for your efforts by having them recognize you. I did a paladin class quest involving the coliseum and every competitor recognized me from other content I’d done – whether it was the main story, making them gear as a crafter, or even delivering their mail on a post moogle quest.

Also, clearing your map of all side quests allows you to find new content easier whenever new quest markers appear.

I’m sure many people don’t care about any of this, but as someone who enjoys the little things I think it’s worth pointing out.

  8. I think the most important thing is to take your time, and enjoy the journey. While the end game it there, and fun the journey to get there is what is the best part imo.

  9. Couple of things:
    – There is a ferry to Waking Sands by the Arcanist's Guild.
    – The "recommended gear" button doesn't work well in a few situations. If you're a tank, pay close attention to whether or not you have gear with more defense on it, since it sometimes puts low defense dragoon gear on. ^^
    – Use the Favored Destinations feature! And link a mobile security token (it's free) to your account, to get a FREE destination!
    – Jobs replace classes. Don't leave home without a soul stone!
    – It can pay off to level multiple jobs at the same time, especially if you have the "Road to 70" Buff from rolling on a preferred server. Being able to switch to a healer or a tank when the MSQ tells you to do a dungeon, can really cut down on queue times. 😀
    – It's okay to get side tracked in the game! But for the sake of convenience and time-saving, do the 2.0 MSQ and unlock flying in the ARR zones. 😀
    – Don't over-cap on poetic tomestones! Get gear for current or future jobs! Or get gear for your retainers!

Also, in stead of replaying the story on an alt, you could try out the New Game+ feature! 😀

  10. One tiny caveat on the Side Quests: You often don't get Jewelry while leveling through the MSQ until the Patches after the X.0 experience (all max level of the expansion). I had that problem when I hit Castrum Meridanum and the Praetorium. Even with the Class Set you get at 45 and 50, I fell a few Item Levels short. Not many, but you might have the encounter the same problem. Vendors in the major ARR cities can help you, but they don't have that high of an item level. So either get lucky in Dungeons or do a Side Quest here or there. It's not that much of a detour. It becomes less of an issue later because you can just buy 60 and 70 Jewelry from the vendors, be they Tomestone of Poetics (Level 50 and onward) or normal Gil.

  11. ALSO – don't pass up or toss away free dungeon loot! Greed on everything. This lets people who need the upgrade roll need on the items while leaving them available if they don't. People miss out on so much free coin by passing on everything. There are many things these items can be used for . If you're a crafter you can desynth them for materials or just to raise your desynth skill. You can turn them in to your free company for seals which can be used for any number of useful items (including the tokens used to send retainers out to get you even more goodies). If you're in later content, many items can also be turned in to help build up the Doman Enclave – where they'll give you more than the vendor price to turn them in. So again, if you're just vendoring them or not picking them up at all you're missing out!

  12. Regarding aetherytes, if you enable 2FA on your account, you get a free teleport destination. If you pair that up with your home being somewhere else, that you can always use /return to get there for free, that's two free destinations for you to use any time you want. You can also ser a number of Favored Destinations (I think it's 4?), which will always have 50% discount when teleporting there. Set those spots to high traffic places, and it will make your life easier and save a ton of gil.

Alternatively, you can later level up a Blue Mage, do your weekly Carnivale Masquerade challenges, spend those Allied Seals into Aetheryte Tickets for free teleports, and never worry about teleport costs ever again. But that is not exactly "new player" advice.

Also, you don't need to start an alt to play the story again. There is a New Game+ option that allow you to replay certain story quests from the beginning at your leisure. This includes all MSQ, all job/role quests, all Trials/Raid stories, Hildibrand quests, and specific subquests that have important dialogue that can't just be cutscene watched at The Undending Journey in the inn.

  13. Got a fuzzy memory, but unless someone parties up with you and takes you to other main city centres, don't you have to be further along in the main story quest line to get to those centres under your own steam? (though I did walk from Ul'dah to Gradinia before I got the balloon transport facility opened) – isn't that main transport option well after level 10?

  14. Just for everybody's info, and can't see it anywhere in comments, but there is a * REALLY GOOD REASON * to do crafting. All of them. Did you know, that if your (eg leatherworking) level is high enough, when you REPAIR YOUR OWN GEAR you get higher stats – durability on it? Goldsmith for jewellery. (not to mention, make your own high quality stuff without spending more gil than you have to). Instead of your head gear being 100%, it can be at 193%, for example. Don't diss the crafting.

  15. Actually hindsight 20/20, idk why anyone would recommend skipping side quests or any quests. It's not like ur gonna wanna really come back to do lvl 15, lvl 20 or even lvl 30 Quests when ur lvl 80. Instead do a proStrat. Unlock a few Jobs and just pick up everything and switch jobs when u turn in Quests. Those side Quests that everyone recommends skipping are for the area u are already in and for things ur already doing. So why skip them? Just swap a job and get credit and then switch back to ur main. Again it's for things in the area u are already doing and ur likely to complete it anyway while ur there.

  16. New Game + lets you re-play the MSQ in sections. So if there was something you want to see again or do again you can choose to do it again. I did it with Lancer to do some of the Heavensward again as a Dragoon. It was so worth it.
Also in the Inn rooms are the Unending Journey tables. It lets you go back and watch all the cutscenes so you can see what you missed. From MSQ to side quests, class quests and even Hildibrand anything that had a cut scene you can see again. More importantly if you were in a clown suit for a critical cut scene (or you had a mullet at the time then you got better hair and you NEED to retake screen shots with that dinner with that very attractive npc) you can watch it again.
This way you don't have to make a new alt unless you absolutely want to. The work it takes on your first character can feel SO daunting on a new alt.

  17. The Novice Trainer. These can be found at any of the main cities, or the Hall of the Novice. The MSQ leads you to the Hall of the Novice before doing your first dungeon, but doesn't require you to do the training: If you are new to the game, or especially if you are new to Tanking or Healing, these tutorials will gift you with some basic lessons on what to watch for in dungeons, and the reward is a good set of level 15 gear for Physical DPS, Magic DPS, Tanking or Healing. If you change jobs/roles in the future, you can go back to him for the relevant lessons and gear.
