Papashan is quite important in the backstory.
He is one of the Sultana's Seven. During the Calamity Uldah was overtaken by unrest and rioting. The head of the Thalmaturges was going to order his Black mages to attack the crowds and disperse them.
Nanamu stripped him of his position and asked who amoung the guards and mages would follow her to speak to the mob.
Only 7 stepped forward. Papashan, the 5 Black Mages brothers and another character who we have not met. They were enough. Nanamu managed to stop the mob and convince them to desist. She then lead the people of Uldah in a prayer.
It was the moment when Nanamu stopped being the Puppet Sultana and used her authority and power for the good of her people.
There is a yearly celebration in the anniversary of the Calamity, called the Rising. It's a time limited event. Few years back the reward of the event was a picture of the Sultana's Seven.
Also the 5 brothers were made the heads of the Thalmaturge Guild. It's worth leveling Thalmaturge/Black Mage just to meet them and see their story line.
Actually leveling jobs just to see their story lines is a grand source of content in the game.
There is also a great payoff in the current expansion, Endwalker. You get to meet your comrades and teachers before the final bit and it actually changes based on what jobs you leveled up.
