Network delay and packet loss has become a problem in final fantasy 14 and Yoshi P has just stepped up to the plate and released an article where he talks all about this problem that is impacting players not only just around the world but also even in Japan! So this is a widespread problem!

It’s a mess so let’s get into it.

Yoshi P starts out by saying that since patch 6.1 was launched there have been reports coming in across the world about network problems such as lag or network loss. Actually come to think of it I have been randomly disconnected here and there but not too much myself– I actually thought my computer had the bed like Amber Heard with that grumpy.

Yoshi P stated that they are investigating into the source of the problem on their end but they haven’t been able to find any problem on their development servers. Citing that the root cause of the problem might actually be related to the internet service providers in Japan that are reporting issues due to high network concentration or other issues related to construction. Yoshi P did say that with respect to that problem, it is possible for them to contact the internet service providers to try and work around this.

Now part of me wonders if maybe my computer is taking an since this is apparently mostly in Japan. Oh no anything but the grumpy.

But in an ongoing effort to try and tackle the problem Yoshi P now goes into detail about describing packet loss and how they would like information to be supplied to the dev team through the support forum. Link will also be in the description for that.

Now let’s get into describing packet loss, which honestly even if you’re not having packet loss problems now it’s a pretty ubiquitous term you will at some point encounter in online gaming.

So they describe packet loss as

Your gaming hardware and FFXIV server are connected via an internet connection and FFXIV works by sending and receiving data called packets on this network. A packet loss occurs when the packet data generated from your gaming hardware or the response packet data from the FFXIV server is lost on the internet path. A packet loss can cause your game screen to stop for a few seconds, or make it feel like your game is frequently lagging.
Additionally, these issues are more prevalent in online games where transferring data is required in real-time, and less noticeable for video feeds, such as those on YouTube and Twitch where the data is accumulated and streamed. In FFXIV, player inputs need to be processed in real-time, and therefore, the data cannot be streamed.

Now they go into instructions about how to investigate packet loss and lag and detail all of the things they want in a report which includes

Tracerout results, more on how to do that in a second.

Information about your internet service provider like name or internet connection type you use.

Where you’re connecting from, what time you experience the issue like what time frames you’ve tried it and or how frequent the issues are. All of this will be used to help figure out what’s going on and potentially be provided to the carriers they have relationships with to discuss what’s going on.

From there they then go into instructions they are providing you on how to obtain the traceroute information that I’m not going to go through here because honestly I don’t wanna be responsible for all that. Insert necessary disclaimers of only follow these kinds of instructions from official sources — ugh I can’t wait until people tell me that warning is silly because it’s such a basic command and like it really is but if you are in software engineering like me then you know you know 100% the headaches around this.

  1. I find it funny they've stopped the AFK kick while also having this issue. I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make, but of all the times to finally stop kicking all the limsa lurkers…

  2. I have been noticing how common disconnects are, I'm lucky that it's never happened to me but most roulettes have at least 1 drop. Hopefully they can work it out because nothing sucks quite like suddenly disconnecting or getting the dreaded lag.

  3. I've experienced quite a lot of game crashes without my internet being affected as well, also Canadian. I play on 3 DCs (EU, NA, JP) and strangely I've had the most issues on NA which should have the best connection by far for me.
