Holy shit his viper take is fucking awful
Positional abilities solve a problem that no longer exists in the game. Positional abilities like backstab and blindside are skill checks for melee dps that tune up melee damage during content where another player holds threat. The reason this used to be important was so that melee with positional skills felt weaker on their own.
This kind of design philosophy isn’t really relevant anymore, and there are better ways to show skill than force positions on players.
I'm sorry people are afraid of the two tiny pixels on the boss' hitbox, but the last thing we need in this game for babies is to have even less to do during combat.
I also dont like positionals. I get why some people might find it enjoyable, but I just dont find it fun/engaging 🤷
The gap closer changes are stupid that its inconsistent across tanks. Why change 2 but not the others? And why make them feel like shit to use in comparison to their original ones
tank aoes need a range increase by at least 3 yalms
No DRK adjustments is crazy they really do love the idea of dark nights beeing severe edgelords huh, cuz im gonna kill myself if they keep this shit up
Bosses spin and turn around enough these days that positional are just kinda nice when you can plan to land them. Thinking about how all the bosses will reappear in the middle of the arena facing the wrong way, finish a 1.5s cast and then turn to face the tank before turning to face another DPS or healer to attack, then turn and throw an aoe at another dps.
Positionals made sense when the bosses were far less active than they are now.
Yes I like positionals and there's a good fucking chance I've been playing longer than you, which was the 1.0 beta. It's one of the few ways this game has any amount of skill expression. If you remove positionals you had better replace it with something else that rewards piloting your job well that is a skill check.
Imagine complaining about a gap closer when you play the highest dps tank. Percieved enmity issues are 100% a skill issue on the tanks end. Git gud GNB mains and use what you have instead of moaning and bitching about a minor inconvenience.
They are gonna make Viper easier? Oh hell no this was the only job that didn't put me to sleep. It's perfectly fine as it is. Whoever has issues with positionals can git gud or try Avarice.
as healer i've learner rather quickly to abuse tanks as meatshields, if i pull emnety i just dance around the tank for a while and the problem solves itself.
6:20 nice suggestion xeemon
Amen to the idea that positionals need to be removed 🙏
At this point just remove the positionals from melee jobs. There is no reason for them anymore. The fights are more complex and you are moving around anyway.
VPR is perfect, if you ask me. The positionals are whatever, I'm not gonna lose any sleep if they remove them. I will, however, be pissed if they slow down the job.
My main issue with viper is dreadwinder, if you’re playing the job properly it comes off cooldown a few seconds before you start your 2min burst and you end up not touching it for 20-30 seconds. Basically even though you’re playing the job properly it doesn’t feel like you are.
The positionals in the basic combo are fine for me since at 100 they are just filler buttons, dreadwinder positionals need to be removed tho
Also the the job is a hot mess if you don’t have perfect ping
They could solve the viper issue by enabling a accessibility toggle to enable true north automatically if your combo and your position do not match, or if you do a positional incorrectly it will auto use true north for your next positionals, and that last one can work because they had combos not work if used in the wrong position so the tech is already in game. This allows you to keep the job as is, and allows it to be easier for those who are having issues, solves both problems everyone is happy.
the positional hate is always a little insane to me… they're just something to make the jobs more fun. personally, i wouldnt really mind if they got rid of them as long as they replace them with something to make the jobs interesting, but i doubt theyd do that. theyd just get rid of them and call it a day. so i kinda hope they dont remove them if thats going to be the case.
The Monk has been trash since the start of Endwalker.
just remove the positional from dreadwind follow up skill and viper gona be perfect, ex2 really feel bad sometime when your out of true north and stuck to face the boss for extended period of time thats all. Doing that gona releave some stress and give more option for fight that require positional uptime
I mean I agree I don’t understand people’s love of positionals. It’s a completely arbitrary requirement to more damage, that adds nothing to the enjoyment of playing the job. I don’t mind doing them but I don’t see defenders infatuation with them. And those of you that defend them acting like they take skill and not caring for them is a skill issue are fucking hilarious.
They keep missing the mark on AST and it's honestly depressing.
As a redmage, I usually am running right alongside the tank while they are gathering enemies.
Positionals never feel good to hit and only exist to feel bad when you can't hit them. Boy I sure love in EX2 where the boss literally stares at me for like 30+ seconds straight multiple times throughout the fight.
BLM is so cooked man it’s sad, some other job has some minor issue and they apologize repeatedly, black mage gets DESTROYED and they address 1 fraction of 1 of the issues and then say they’ll buff potencies. RIP my favorite job
I did play back in 2.0 and Heavensward. Im a Legacy player. And i enjoy positionals. I played during a time when trick from ninja had to hit the back or you literally dont get the effect. Or how missing one on Drg meant your combo ended. And the potentcies for missing was crazy. Until they find a way to make Melee engaging without positionals, they need to stay. Right now, they are the thing that keeps melee unique from other roles and offers a form of engagement that imo other classes do not have.
Whether that is for you(anyone reading this) or not is up to preference but for now, it offers an identity that isnt yet homogenized. If they can create an engaging melee combat system that can replace or at least take the place of positionals, then we can talk. Until then, removing or reducing them isnt a good idea in my opinion.
I mean true north has a cool down of 45 seconds. It’s 5 seconds longer than the dreadwinder combos. I barely have to do positionals it’s like samurai
New tank gap closers are shit, give us back the old ones with 0 potency. The new ones are too sluggish and clip GCDs super badly basically making them pointless.
I really question where they get their feedback sometimes. Viper is top damage in like every single thing I've played and it's easier than summoner right now. The complaints about positionals are wack. I question if those people have even played the job. Even with summoner. I think most people who say it's super easy suck at it. Especially when it comes to snapshotting and actually consistently rotating summons. Where with Viper. It's the closest to braindead they've made a job. On top of being a selfish job. Imo, Viper should be up there for obvious reasons but it more belongs somewhere around dragoon and monk. It should not be competing with SAM and Reaper. Literally a new player could pick up Viper right now and be top damage. It's that easy.
I don't get why they are so heavily rewarding this. I get they are trying to make jobs easier but the easiest job in the game shouldn't be top damage ever.
Picto feels like it has replaced black mage. However, that pretty much confirms that the current state of picto isn't gonna last for very long. If BLM isn't safe from the terrible job changes. Nothing is.
The problem with removing positional attacks is they aren't replacing the business with anything else. They are just removing something without replacing it while ALSO making jobs feel more boring and same to play in my opinion. So all that happens is jobs become simpler while also giving players less business to think about, so it becomes a 1 2 3 spam outside of burst windows, and you FEEL the extra time of just standing there instead of getting ready to move for positional attacks. In harder content sure, positional attacks aren't at all important compared to dodging mechanics, there is enough to keep you busy already.
The reason Xeno doesn't understand that is because Unga bunga warrior brain stand in one spot the entire fight anyway.
The dashes on tanks also need a reduction on the end lag after using them. Your character dashes in and has to wait like a full second before you can even hit an AoE ability despite having the GCD available. It's like you dash in and your brain just blue screens for a second before they go oh yeah I should swing in a circle.
Positionals are fun not because of damage buff hitself, it's because you have to think about it while you greed during certain mechs, it's another layer, something you have to think and not just hitting like an idiot
i agree with you on most things but your takes on positional is just bad
Even tho in heavensward it was too annoying since you lost your combo and shit but right now they're in a good place, it's some optimisation you don''t need in dungeon/extreme but it's needed in savage/ultimate i really don't want them to remove the positionals of viper x')
Seeing people call viper too weak or low dps is hilarious when even on an rdps chart its in the top when it has no party buffs at all and the only adps with a higher cap than it is samurai which has like 4 abilities that are 900+ potency lol
No one cares about removing positionals, but if they nerf the busyness of Viper its just gonna be boring compared to what it currently is.
The reason why people are lol'ing at Viper changes is because Viper is already the most brain dead melee job in the game that they are making even easier because people said it was too hard, its not about positionals. Yes one might think positionals should be removed. But the fact that SE is only removing Viper positionals means they dont see positionals as a problem for everyone else. So the Viper change is unfortunately not a "win" for people who dont like positionals
I love how people talk about positionals like it is a life or death situation and it makes a job infinitely more engaging when most people don't actually know how to do their damn rotation in the first place.
I like positionals on a couple abilities. And I think that everybody is blowing this completely out of proportion like they said they're going to remove all positionals. What will probably happen is that they will remove the positionals from either the base combo or dreadwinder either or
7:02 so true. WHY ARE YOU RUNNING?
No no. Don't remove positionals. They don't have to be like ARR or HW before and the punishment doesn't have to be severe. Just another layer of optimization that we can have fun with instead of becoming a tank without the responsibility of a tank. SE would just remove positionals and have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING take its place. It's what they always do. I was one of those who thought that maybe SMN in 7.0 could be less stale as 6.0 could be a decent base to start with. But what did they do with that base? Nothing at all. They'll remove positionals, make all your combos 1 button without adding more combos, make every AoE a circle and remove all casts at this rate following this logic.
Positionals are outdated!
Casting is outdated!
Combos are outdated!
Gameplay is outdated!
"viper dps is set low" maaaaaan viper is like 2nd best dps in the game, its basically tradition in every game that when a new class or character is released its OP
I really miss the plunge animation for DRK. Hoping they bring it back and make it a GCD or something
