  1. My heart has been broken so many times with games I loved closing down. FFXIV has just officially announced the single most imporant update for the long term health of the game. No one will care, but everyone who plays FFXIV and wants it to continue should be INCREDIBLY MASSIVELY OUTRAGEOUSLY happy to see this. This is bigger than a raid tier, this is bigger than a deep dungeon. This is a PROMISE FOR A FUTURE OF FFXIV! Game companies are BUSINESSES! They are interested in making money, if they invest like this then it's a PROMISE they plan to make more content. This is BY FAR the biggest update FFXIV has had and will have for a very long time. This is a very big deal… and will sadly fall on deaf ears.

  2. While I am also glad that the server hardware is being updated, I doubt that it'll fix the issues with snapshotting at least for now (it might mean that in the future it'll come in the future), issues with snapshotting and that kind of stuff generally comes from a netcode that is just messy as a result of the game having the be rebuilt from 1.0, netcode isn't an issue that is solved with just having better server hardware

  3. While it is a great thing to see the servers upgraded, this is far from a rare occurrence for FFXIV, so it feels a bit sensationalist to say this is the biggest thing they've done or anything in that vein. Improving server hardware and architecture and facilitating the addition of new worlds and even new regional datacenters is fairly common for this game, especially compared to basically everything else. It's a promise they've been making and a commitment they've been making since 2.0

  4. This was on the wave of WoW influx of players, that's when they may the decision, since than game probably lost 50% of those players, still has massive numbers but I don't think it will comeback to that peak for a while, even with 7.0 will hard to meet. WoW shiTshow was something else.

  5. They know their game has what it takes to keep going, and I for one plan to be there for the journey!
Fingers crossed this update will eventually lead to cross-physical DC travel; it would be nice to visit my EU friends with my NA character.

  6. The best and worst part of capitalism is that a thing will keep existing so long as it makes money; and I'm pretty sure that the game is still making a shitton of it, so I never had any thoughts of it ending any time soon.

That said, it's good that squeenix is willing to make that kind of investment back into the game. Too many devs forget that you're supposed to do that if want something to keep making money, and it's further testament that Yoshi-p knows what he's doing.

  7. I really appreciate your willingness and enthusiasm discussing and dedicating entire videos to topics that most would consider niche, mundane and unimportant. This is such a huge thing and i'm glad you're doing your part to bring attention to it!

  8. The server upgrades may be because of the high queues during Endwalker launch were they had to stop selling the game so people would stop buying the game because everything was constantly full. They are likely expecting another big surge pf players in the next expansion launch

  9. I truly feel like a big upgrade for FFXIV would be to add a new data center for east coast players.

Back in 2.X the servers were relatively close to my area (I live in Toronto, servers were in Quebec or Montreal)

I was getting around 30 ping, and was able to double weave which was majorly important back then.

Now that they've swapped the servers to california, my ping has been consistently around 60 – 70 and I'm no longer able to double weave.

My friend was streaming the game with me and I could physically see where I was and where things were updating in comparison to him and it's just so bad compared to what it was before.

I truly feel like they could add a new DC that plenty of us east coasters would instantly join for better ping.

A server update is great, but being able to actually run the game in a good enough ping is better.

  10. I wasnt sure if it would feel like a stability increase , when I read it, I assumed it was more in preparation for 7.0 population boom, as per every start of an xpac plus the whole HD textures being added with giving more allowance for server side stuff for consoles. Like improved glam or something and housing. Hard to tell how much of an improvement the servers will be

  11. The funny thing is that, I'd imagine, FFXIV is the revenue source that allows Squeenix to survive all the stupidity their execs engage in, like the NFT idiocy that's going to cost them a good bit of money, the recent game that failed so badly they shut down the studio, etc.
They're supporting FFXIV because it's the trampoline that saves them from company wide failure.

Makes me wonder when they replace the EU servers…

  16. Well it took you 2 minutes to get to the point. I would have likely clicked away if I didn't skip.

Honestly this just how square enix is. We all got this info via discord, so no one should click on your video.

The actual reason why you are making this video is because how often do devs actually do something for North American servers….
A couple of months ago the main dude in charge did say that there's a lot of plans for the game this year and next. So don't be surprised about any future updates. They're dead serious about this game right now, dead.

  17. You're way to optimistic about this server upgrade. It'll likely change nothing in terms of snapshotting or anything about how the game feels. It's obviously a good thing and shows they're willing to spend money to keep the game going, but that's about it. Network "issues" are largely constrained by design and netcode, not the quality of the servers.

  18. I appreciate the optimism, but I have to disagree with a lot of this video.

These changes only apply to the NA data center. Not all of them. So, it's unlikely we will see any actual improvements in things you described. Additionally, we don't really know their reasons for doing this. It's quite possible this new infrastructure is going to be cheaper for them in some way. Or maybe they had a reliability issue with the old one. It's not necessarily an investment.

Nevertheless, I would agree that the game community is generally very pessimistic and gets angry over nothing with sqex. I think the game has done a tremendous job overall, but I would prefer if they mentioned some kind of upgrade to existing systems to show that they are trying to modernize the game.

    IE

Free company, grand companies, squadrons, companions, and retainers have not been updated since arr. Improving one of these systems would be a better indication that they are interested in long term investment into the game.

  19. I remember when blizzard replaced their physical servers way back in the day and its almost 20 now. I think the graphical update, and the small changes to netcode with maybe an eye for big changes long term , protend a long term future. Personally it's a little frustrating I can never get below 65ms ping on the East Coast, even at a super high end connection.

  21. So for a total idiot like me, what sort of change will this bring? Faster or more consistent servers? More housing wards in the near future? Less loading screens and segmentation of the world into instanced areas?
