Why Playing FFXIV Made Me LOSE HOPE for Destiny 2

About a month ago, after years of keeping up with Destiny 2 and over 1,000 hours of playtime across both games, I made the decision to uninstall just weeks before Lightfall. And it turns out, FFXIV was the final straw.

  1. Pretty much summarizes my experience with both games too. I poured 2000 hours into D2, only to have half my vault sunset, and even now they've reverted that, old weapons just simply get power crept by new ones all the time. I stopped playing D2 after I cleared VOTD a couple times on its release, and the difference is night and day. Every accomplishment in FFXIV stays – you grind for the things you want, not for the things you feel you have to get. You have as much time as you want to do what you want, and you can take breaks without feeling like you're losing out.

It's taken until now for me to feel like I want to briefly dip back into Destiny for the new expansion, but even so, I know I won't want to play it like I used to. The gunplay is incredible, and I think it's the thing I miss the most, but that alone doesn't make me want to put the same hours into the game.

In summary, really resonate with what you said. I hope you keep enjoying FFXIV! And I really hope Destiny can improve someday too. Underneath all the grime, it is a brilliant game.

  2. Be careful, Bubbins. You may get painted with the same brush as Joker (DarkSide Royalty) as a "Destiny Hater"… even though you clearly love the game and want it to be all it could be.

  3. We're on the same boat Bubbins. Destiny 2 was very up and down for me for several years.

Every year I and many others were always hoping that the game will be "better than ever" after said expansion comes out. That moment never came…for seven plus years.

Destiny 2 was and still is developed with "Minimal Effort" by Bungie and will never exceed the heights of their previous Expansion Forsaken, because the Management in Bungie sees it as "over delivery.

For me, FFXIV (when I started months after Beyond Light's release) was truly the most eye-opening moment I've experienced in videogames, an actual MMO with zero FOMO, limitless amounts of content (since it was never removed from the Game), Stellar quality of it's Main Story, Gameplay (Trials & Raiding) and a playerbase/community that's surprisingly relaxed and friendly to new/old players.

I could talk about FFXIV all day but I'm just glad to have quit Destiny for the past two years.

  4. I just got tired of chasing the engram dragon. I missed destiny 1 where i could just acquire the dead orbit armor, a flame sniper from crucible, use that gear to do raids to get the BIS gear for the current expansion.

  5. Why the little easter egg at the end? Honestly, because I have all these Destiny voice lines, I wanted to use one, and Calus has the coolest lines/laugh ever. That's really it. 😅

  6. It's something I've been struggling with as well for a bit now. Destiny 2, as well as Elite Dangerous for that matter, are all timed grinds at this point. And even though ED is a LITTLE bit better than D2, it still feels like it's just useless at this point. But D2 was something I played for ages and ages and ages, getting the new seasonal stuff when it came out and everything, but when I got into FF? It completely changed everything. I haven't touched D2 for over two years at this point. And it feels… pretty alright honestly. It's not that it's a bad game, sure, everyone loves it. But I can just honestly say that I prefer FFXIV. And that's okay. You don't have to feel bad about leaving one game behind to play another if you like it more. 🙂
