Update : Endwalker has been move to Dec 3 for early access and full release Dec 7
This is one of the best FFXIV vs WoW videos made; as a 12 year WoW refugee who quit last year after a fruitless beta cycle I quit on Shadowlands prepatch…. when no one could REALLY understand /ready to accept yet. Great job on this video; you deserve more views and subscribers
Call me bitter and a butt, but I'm still keenly aware of a sizeable chunk of the WoW player base who up until recently would call FFXiV weeb trash.
Same people coming over and behaving like FFXiV is the best game and wow is trash and etc, completely not owning up to the fact they smacked talk the hell out of a really well made game with a great community cause its not WoW.
Yeah that bothers me. Do I eant to keep out the wow refugees? No of course not. More the merrier. Just let's not pretend how a decent sum of wow players mocked this game for stupid reasons instead of giving it a go.
I rejoined aftre three years of not playing. And I was recognized in newbie chat! That would never happen ever in the life time of WoW.
I played WoW for about two hours. I've been playing FF14 since Spring 2014. FF14 is winning because of its story and its community. That and the almost religious devotion of its producer.
I do agree FF is winning. But I would also like to point a slight disagreement. ESO had been doing better than WOW for a while. In fact the only reason I think ppl held only WOW being top dog for so long, was simple nostalgia or thats just the way it was for so long. ESO has been racking in the subs and growing. Not until this last year did they start taking hits. And FF has grown like 30% this last year. So I do agree its winning, but ESO was by no means a "niche" game. It has had over 5 million subs for most of its time out there.
I’d argue that ff14 was set to win before the free trial added heaven award I joined the game a few months before that and everyone I met were wow refugees who told me not to bother trying wow because ff14 is just a better game
i think the most underrated fact of ffiv id the cross plattform charackter
No – "Enix company" was back then, more like a Investor/Yacht Club (Yes, back then – they built Yachts)/and ALSO a Real Estate Company(!).
And First name of Square – was actuall not a just "Square", but a "SQUARE Soft" (You can find it (that name of the Company) on NES/Famicom Cartridges of Final Fantasy).
Fun Fact – SEGA now, is a subsidiary too, of Maternal Company called "Sega Sammy Holdings" Corporation. Where, is Sega – is just Main Sega and makes games, and a Sammy Company – it is was a company which works always everywhere, but main profit of them – was pachislot machines and casinos (Konami, Blizzard Activision, and Atari (Recent Atari) says hello. Even by the same company hierarchy, lol)
And the Actual Good quotation from WarCraft is gonna be – "Arthas, Kings don't rule forever, my son…". Pretty ironic in the end.
Though I'm not really a huge WOW player before, I did try it but never felt attached to it. Even other MMOs like Ragnarok Online, Rising Force, Perfect World, Atlantica and others. It didn't seem to hold water for me and I don't know why initially. I like Ragnarok Online and Rising Force out of all other because of nostalgia but never sub for it past 3-6 months or so. The closest that I enjoyed MMORPG was SWTOR and I think its purely because it has a solid story. But after that, it took me years to pick-up another MMO because I don't want to invest too much money or time for a game with very limited content and all you will be doing is grind your levels from 1 to 50 or 60 etc. I even didn't touch FFXI or FFXIV initially for fear that it would be the same as the others….and boy I was wrong. Fast-forward to now, I have been playing FFXIV for like 5-6 years now and still doing contents, past-contents, side-quests, getting relic weapons and playing through and getting ready for EW!
In regards to problems and issues, the FFXIV is really fast when it comes to your concerns like when your account gets compromised and all, they replied ASAP. So a big plus for me! And seeing that the Dev team listens to its playerbase, then I'm truly convinced that my money and sub every month is well worth it!
It's because you westerners are creatively bankrupt and weak. The Japanese take risks and do not worry about politics.
I am an FFXIV veteran of 6 years and I never played WoW because I never had a PC that could run it. I play on PS4. Its been fascinating to hear about all the things WoW did wrong since from the outside I always thought of it as the King, a great MMO I couldnt play (admittedly with an ugly art style I couldn't stand). Turned out I was already on the best MMO and hearing people say "I could have been in HW but I was playing WoD" makes me grateful I was in HW and glad that they can leave the apparently abusove relationship with Blizzard and come have fun with us
Hard pass on Final Fantasy XIV,lame ass story,50 levels of a boring fetch this, pick up that and talking tutorial just doesn't do it for me.
Neither does WoW,stopped enjoying WoW when all the expansions after WOTLK came out, don't play WoW anymore anyway…gave Final Fantasy XIV but it was lame as fuck, seems like an oasis for furries and transgender confused individuals with 500 pronouns.
All these new youtube videos about FFXIV winning, being better than WoW and everything of the sort make me cringe. I've been a WoW player since vanilla and a FFXIV player for almost a year now, and unfortunately, with the mass migration of WoW players to FFXIV, some of the WoW mentalities are also joining FFXIV.
The constant need to show how the game you are playing is better than the competition, the dunking on smaller MMOs, the lack of understanding and communication in-game…. these are just a few of the average WoW player traits. Since the start of autumn, my YouTube feed as been inundated with videos of WoW bros joining the FFXIV and dunking on WoW, and now I'm starting to see bits and pieces of the WoW player traits in FFXIV. I just hope that the people who join this cool game understand it's not like WoW and don't completely fuck up the FFXIV community with the WoW mindset.
won what bro? give it time
A word if caution about SE. They treat FF14 right but they are still a corporation and act that way. FFBE for example is massively predatory: content is cut for the global version if it helps the player too much, rewards are reduced or handed out in log in rather than lump sums, the developers lie or don't communicate at all. Part of this is the company that runs it for SE, Gumi, but a large part of it comes from SE itself and even if it wasn't they could put a stop to it. And it has little to do with being a gacha: both FFRK and Dissidia aren't run that predatory.
The best way most FFXIV players describe how they feel when they log in isn't "What do I need to do today?", but instead it's "What should I do today?", you never feel like you need to do one particular thing, it's just what you want to do on that particular day.
FFXIV to me? Is family! I'm not exaggerating either. I have throat cancer and generally I'm very weak and smol! Doesn't help I'm a 5'2 Fhemboi! The pros and cons of looking like a smol girl, lol! So I deal with quite abit of depression. The world of XIV helps a lot, the gameplay is fun but it's the people and being able to play with my boyfriend and with those people.
One day in the crystal tower duty raid I apologised for being slow with my healing, I guess I accidentally spilt my heart out. The entire raid gathered up and for 30mins we just hung out at the throne room talking about anything and took awesome screenshots of everyone doing synced emotes, we watched three people have a really creative and meme worthy emote battle. At the end everyone was telling me to fight on, that I have too much to lose, that I'd miss out on so much, but most of all and this made me cry my eyes out, that without me around, XIV would be just that bit more dull and darker.
A few years later, we all gather up on Wednesday night and have fun messing around at Limsa's beach or at the hingan beach, sometimes we go to the Sylph forest. I'm in an FC with a fair few of them even.
They call it the Fhemboi's Playdate since someone joked that they've all become simps for a real Fhemboi xD
So yea, XIVs community is hands down the best there is for a game, especially MMORPGs. This would have NEVER have happened in WoW, I'm pretty sure I'd have been told to go off myself and then kicked.
Welcome to XIV sprouts, you'll remember this game for the rest of your lives and I'm sure you'll look back on it with fondness and happiness.
What Blizzard has done to WoW's story is akin to having a 7 year old boy with severe ADHD come up with the overall plot and new lore (retcon fully allowed) and then having a bunch of 60 year old virgins who still watch kids' cartoons all the time flesh out the details.
Vanilla Alpha – Hey what should the world be called? AZEROTH! …but that's the name of a kingdo– AZEROTH! No, the main kingdom in the southern part o– AZEROTH!!! …ok fine.
MoP – Hey, panda man was cool in WC3, let's do him for next expansion! Yeah, whole continent! Oh quick, throw in old god something so it relates to literally anything else!
WoD – Hey guys, i found an old WC2 manual, look at all these orc factions! Oh cool, let's do that for the next one! Buy how, they're all dead…? Everyone's favorite stupid illogical narrative device – time travel! …mixed with alternate universe travel!
Legion – BRRRTTTTT PEW PEW BZZZZRRRRRR man, demons are kinda cool, let's bring back them! Ok but this is the last time, I'm tired of playing demons, so let's just rush through the entire second half of the story that's been building since WC1 and get it out of the way.
BfA – So have you guys seen Celestials in those marvel comics? Let's do that but with titans and Azeroth, we can make a dwarf say "AUUCH, CHAMPION" 500000 times, too, and sorta talk to the planet and also I like boats and water stuff.
SL – I saw a cool special effect where the sky shattered like glass! WHOA COOL! Yeah, let's make them do that. Also I just watched Avengers again so let's do an infinity gauntlet with the stones! Ok but mom said copyright infringement is bad so we gotta do it different! That's ok, we can do a bunch of different places where the stones are like in the movies but just make them our normal aesthetics we've used 500 times.
i cant speak for all gamers only myself. i came to ff14 last december from runescape. my gf at the timemade me spend 80 on shadowbringers so i could play it with her and she forced me through all the cutscenes, didnt let me play my preferred class, teach me anything, or go at my own pace. turns out she wanted me to pick up scholar to i would heal for her (ffs at least chose a GOOD healer like whm) sop naturally i hated it. than last december i needed a break from runescape and tried it again with an open mind and i was so engrossed by the story, gameplay, classes, characters, landscapes, literally everything, its now all i play. i got no intention of going anywhere anytime soon. eorzea is my home now. ive only played about 11 months and i have 4k total hours of playtime and my main char has 139 days 22 hours 49 minutes.
You ticked off a list of new stuff, but FF allows players to go back to any point of the lore and still play it. It definitely is not the same as the original content, but it has enough challenge and FUN to engage players. WoW killed itself back in 2005, when it ignored its horribly toxic community. Forums didn't matter, and streams were still a distant dream. FF is definitely the right game / right time currently, but make no mistake: WoW has fallen on its sword, finally unable to overcome it's toxic community, it's toxic developer(s), and it's toxic practice of destroying its classic lore for time sinks. And do not think the culture wars being fought do not matter either. WoW has spent its time at the heart of the western culture war around victimhood. FF is a Japanese game, refitted a bit for western audiences. Things which are kawaii (cute), strong characters who do not demand support, and the strengths of femininity being treated as the separate by equal ideals most of us "peasants" still enjoy. It does not judge you, it celebrates you! Just don't be an ass, or those cute little "objectified cat girls" will show you just how they make "cat gut." This was a great summary though, very fair without hating on WoW. A++
Have played FFXIV for 8 years now. I am absolutely loving the influx of new players. It’s great going into the starting cities and seeing them packed with sprouts.
Final Fantasy, much like Animal Crossing New Horizons in 2020 achived a perfect storm completely out of their control.
In Animal Crossing’s case, the Covid lockdowns began in earnest late March/early April of 2020. ACNH releaced March 30, 2020. That timing meant that at the beginning of lockdown, people that had a Nintendo Switch had a brand new, chill life simulator game they can put 100s of hours into just in time to be locked in their houses with nothing to do. This drove up sales for ACNH and made it the second best selling Switch Game period, beating out Smash Ultimate.
Final Fantasy 14 experienced something similar. Content creators, and by extention players of World of Warcraft waking up to how bad Blizzard’s design choices really were in Shadowlands drove these people to look for alternatives. Not only was FF14 constantly whispered into these people’s ears with methods such as the Extended Free Trial meme, but FF14 had announced Endwalker in Febuary of 2021, meaning that not only did these refugees have hundreds of thousands of hours of “brand new” content to chew through, but they also have a brand new expantion they can experience with everyone else if they were quick enough with the MSQ. Consitering the Wow Exodus really started in earnest in June and July, before the sexual harrassment debacle went public in August, one can’t really say it was exclusively because of the lawsuit that this exodus began at all. To use an analogy, World of Warcraft already had the stab wound, the doctors just accidentally punctured an artery while trying to fix the original wound, making the bleeding so much worse, and Final Fantasy 14 was the game that benifited the most from World of Warcraft’s hemoraging.
It really is a shame though. It never had to be this way, as Wow could of learned and both Ff14 and Wow could of improved off of eachother, as Yoshi P did cite Wow (in Cataclysm and Mists) as one of the main insparations as to how to craft ARR. Yoshi P even said in a recent interview that he was excited that New World came out and it was popular, so they can see what Amazon did and somehow work in what worked in New World into 14. This is how things should be. Healthy competition, because in the end everyone wins.
Hey, just rececntly found your channel and like the stuff, just wanted to point out you linked the wrong original of the meme.

But its an easy mistake as they do literally have the same name lol But they do specifically the dance from the original.
The thing is, Final Fantasy XIV didn't have to do some new, revolutionary thing to draw in players.
It's been what it is for years now — the problem was, people didn't give it a chance. I didn't give it a chance. It was just the other, less popular MMO. We didn't pay it any mind.
Until we did. Then we realized — or at the very least, I realized — that FFXIV was its own, fantastic game with enough similarities to WoW to make a comfortable transition. From a story perspective, FFXIV is mindblowing. Gameplay is, like I said, similar enough to be familiar, but different enough to be a new experience. The side stories and events, mini-games, etc., only add more to the world and make it that much more enjoyable.
I could go on and on about this and that, and the little things I've discovered in my short time in Eorzea, but I honestly do think a lot of people just didn't give it the attention it deserved, when it deserved it. We were late. But better late than never.
I know I’m gonna sound like a blizzard simp
But with everyone praising this game and it’s community, my personal experience makes it come off as a cult. Absolutely loved ARR but everything afterward got slower and more tedious. Best thing I can say about ShBr was I liked the ambiance and aesthetic, that’s it. Constantly hearing “play what you want” only to hear after months that I can’t play that class because there’s already a Shield Healer. “Oh you wanted to raid with us? Our FC doesn’t raid. Sorry!” “I have a static you can join- Oh wait, sorry we’re full now!” “There’s too many damn sprouts, go back to your dying game if you don’t know mechanics!” I’m tired of it all. I gave this game a chance because my friends play it and I enjoyed it at first, but the community drew me away. I don’t know if people just got tired of the massive amount of sprouts or if their friendly façades finally broke but I can’t stand it anymore. I stopped enjoying WoW as a game years ago but stayed for the community and friends I made in it, that’s the only reason I keep going back.
