  1. I play and judge the MSQ from a solo perspective. I don’t watch FF streamers for their takes on MSQ or lack thereof if story isn’t their thing. Personally I watch streamers to get into the endgame which is what this game severely lacks. Streamers that stream the endgame is so non existent in this game

  2. You can’t make the claim that WoW’s story is disjointed when neither you nor I have played World of Warcraft.

Also, XIV’s story is not protected. People believe the lies of Ascians and because of that the story is ruined.

    Oh, sorry. Disclaimer again.

  3. Being a WoW fan since 2004, I want to say that the WoW story is just more heavily focused on world building. The characters in the story just kind of do their own thing and occasionally cross paths with you.

FFXIV seems much more involved. You are called the "hero" but you actually feel like you are since you yourself are a part of every significant thing that happens in the story, instead of things happening off-screen or in a seperate Novel.

  4. WoW's story is not just disjointed and confusing. It's written with a fundamental misunderstanding of how narratives must play out, there are lots of rules to stories and if they don't have them they will always be bad. WoW breaks all the rules and the writers clearly don't even seem to know the rules exist. They need new writers, the novels are written professionally, but the actual in game narrative is written by amateurs.

  5. FF14's story has gradually shifted from the world to a more narrowly focused JRPG style and that has worked in its favor. But, it does piss me off that so many people refuse to allow people to talk about the story in their guilds/linkshells and is pretty much the reason why I kept hopping from free company to free company for like 3 years.

  6. One of the things businesses often talk about is "what's our niche". FFXIV's niche is the story. It's what makes the game unique. The fact that it's good aside from that is what allows for a fairly seamless transition from WoW to it.

  7. As someone who hasn't been a fan of MMOs for about a decade and just beat ARR I have to say that to me it felt like a terrible first impression unfortunately.

Not the story itself though, I thought it was a good introduction and foundation but the story telling and pacing is just… I don't know. To me MMOs as an entertainment media are incapable of making you feel like the experience was made for you and your character regardless of their importance to the story. It sucks to see this cool cutscene with the main villain giving his speech directly to your character only for the cutscene to end and all of a sudden 7 dudes appears out of nowhere alongside your character and completely destroy the boss in a minute. No one outside the MSQ bubble seemed affected by any world defining moment that was happening.
Also, the amount of fetch quests and bloat was too much at times. That isn't a negative of FF14 though, it's just how MMOs are. But the thing is that I keep hearing how FF14 is more of a JRPG than an MMO so I can't help it but judge it as one. If you flip the narrative on the game and FF14 really was a JRPG, it would be a heavily criticized one since one of the biggest complaints about JRPGs, western RPGs and games in general, is how bloat and repetitive questing can and will turn good games into average or even bad ones.

I 100% don't have a FF14 problem, I have a MMORPG problem and that's very unfortunate because much like WoW 10 years ago, I gave 14 a chance because of the story and lore and ended up feeling there's a fantastic story trapped inside a game that isn't for everybody. It wouldn't be a problem (to me) if FF wasn't mainly a single player focused experience, and hearing about how FF14 is one of, if not the best Final Fantasy story makes me very disappointed with myself for not being able to force my way through the game. I'm not the kind of guy that watches games on Youtube, so I'll probably just shelf the game for god knows how long and tell myself I'll eventually play it, but Idk..

  8. Having played the Warcraft games since 2, I just couldn't take all the horrible writing decisions anymore, including retcons and complete personality transformations of core characters within the same expansion just to force the story in a direction.

  9. Regarding Thumbnail potentially spoilering content. I remember Mekkah Dee who uploads FFXIV music regularly. I recall when 5.3's trial came out, their thumbnail for the song was the 5.3 key art for the first week or two, then changed it to boss art afterwards. (Not saying who 5.3 boss is a Lucron isn't there yet)
