Gaming is such an interesting thing, like why does FFXIV Endwalker get a pass with their servers when other games do not have that luxury.

  1. When a developer is super open with their community and even warns them about it beforehand, then yeah, they tend to get more leniency from said community. When a developer has acted in bad faith to their community, the community is more likely to believe the developer could have done something but just didn't to avoid costs etc

I guess it's a double standard but there's plenty of reasons for that double standard

  2. I've had to wait in lines for movies. For books. For concert tickets, and coffee. I've waited in line 45 minutes for Red Lobster, and Red Lobster isn't even good.

I give them a pass because I've been playing FFXIV since 2015, and even after playing Shadowbringers, I never thought it would blow up the way it has this year. Seems ridiculous to get pissed at the devs for not realizing years ago they should stock up on servers when the population wasn't exploding.

And, at the end of the day, I've spent a lot of my life waiting in line for something I want because a bunch of other people want it too.

  3. Because they were incredibly forthcoming about it. They didn't expect the explosion in popularity because really, how could have, it was a perfect storm that they weren't prepared for between the pandemic and WoW exodus and were incredibly open about it.

Yoshi P and his team have gone above and beyond to foster a community of openness and don't obfuscate anything. People ask why things get done and we get a multi essay long response explaining literally every bit and piece of the situation to their attempts to fix it, to why it is happening, all while not sounding like the general corporate BS that we normally get. Turns out when people are treated like people and not just dollar signs, they are far more lenient.

  4. I kind of disagree with Brian on the good game armor argument.

Sure 14 is a good game but i'd argue it's "good dev armor". I think because Yoshi-P is so open about things. They are open about not having servers and how hard they've tried to get more. There isn't a question that Yoshi-P on down to the newest programmer or animator that they care.

I would argue Blizzard would've gotten this treatment during the WotLK era. Back then they released things that felt quality. Systems that weren't about engagement but fun. Blizzard soured this reputation though.

  5. not a double standard imo. the devs have spent time engaging and being open with the community. expecting the norm to be rage is kinda a toxic view, and that's because that has been the norm in games like wow. also, regardless of the veracity of the argument, pandemic + chip shortage would probably have got blizz a partial pass too (excluding breast milk thefts)
