I stop when I realise I'm not enjoying it. Never reach that stockholm syndrome level od dilusion, thank god.
My experience was something like 1.x: This is slowly getting interesting. Dalamud: This is somehow less interesting but still good. 2.0: This is bad. 2.x: Okay, it's getting pretty good. They're getting the storytelling down. Holy しt that last cutscene. Where is this going?! 3.0: This is pretty good. Oh cool, they're continuing that storyline from 2.x. Oh. Back to HW. Oh.. End of 3.0. Oh…
Like everything between 2.0 and the conclusion to the 2.x storyline in 3.0, I felt was pretty good. Then it hit me with like that triple slap.
(Even less important rant below lol)
So I was going to level DRG then go through 3.x with it. But I didn't like DRG, so I leveled everything to see what I did like. The answer was 1. BLU, Distant 2. Healers Distant 3. Everything else.
So then what do I go through 3.x with? I can't do it with BLU. And to be honest, like in those scenes where you unsheathe your weapon ready for battle, there's something a lot less badass unsheathing a book, or a deck of Yu-Gi-Oh cards than say a giant axe or katana or whatever. Healers also get instant queues, so it makes more sense to level them dungeon grinding. So kind of have(but not really) to level something I don't really care much about.
Like every year I get the lil tickle to get my BLU up-to-date and do some more quests. But haven't actually played since like 2020 I think. 💀
The beginning shlog is just waay too long and than being forced to do dungeons which is group activity but than when i was with a group we couldn't do the main storyline. I kept being told oh once you get to the expansions it's sooo good… yeah but you have to go through torture to get there. I think i quit around lvl 40. Also had issues with friending my friends when we made alts…. The crafting was my favorite though, wish other mmo's stole their crafting system.
They were breaking my heart by Heavensward. This is the only MMO I've stuck with long-term and a big reason for that is the story.
yup and then they patch it up and torture it to death. and you've never felt so happy about something so sad.

for anyone wondering, every time Jesse says " and then you play a little bit longer" is probably about 50 hours of playtime each.
I recently created an account on the trial and indeed going through ARR is a bit rough, 70hrs in (20hrs of Character Customisation) and I still feel like Heavensward is so far away.
Still I am going to keep trucking until I at least finish the trial content and make a decision on purchasing from there.
Gotta get through realm reborn before things get interesting

"And then they break your heart!" lol that's most RPGs whether it's because of amazing story telling and you're in tears because of that, or you're weeping because of horrible story telling because they ruined a game with it.

The game has never captured me..i love good stories and im up to StormBlood and just quit for the 3rd time…im so bored or uninterested in the corny acting and characters…its so hard to feel invested.

100% on point for most players these days. I actually enjoyed the Realm Reborn stuff back when I started playing, before they shortened that section of content, but I know most people find it boring. That's fine though. If it's not your cup of tea then okay, but at least try to get to Heavensward before you write the game off is all I, and the majority of the ffxiv community, ask of you. This game has characters that will pull you in, you'll become invested in them until the story rips the rug out from under you and leaves you crying on the floor, feeling like you can't proceed forward, but you must continue onward my fellow Warriors of Light! You must see this story through to the current content for the story and the characters are worth the struggle and the pain. And when you finish up to current content and stand with the rest of us waiting for the day new content is released, you can look back at all you've achieved, everyone you've met, and look forward to the future will your new friends.

As an autistic person I'd never get to that "play a little bit longer" point because I DEEPLY hate monthly pay to play subscription models
