What Makes These Final Fantasy XIV Quests So Funny??

If one is lucky, they may come across a grieving Miqo’te in a graveyard west of Thanalan. What follows is some of the best content in the entire game. Let’s talk about what makes Hildibrand’s quests so funny, and how they elevate slapstick comedy by playing off the animation conventions of large-scale video games.

  1. DID YOU KNOW that the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has a free trial, and includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 with no restrictions on playtime? Sign up, and enjoy Eorzea today!

Sorry someone needed to say it

  2. Only way this video could've been better is if you did the Manderville Dance. Great work despite that, though! Not enough people really discuss Hildibrand beyond "it's great, you should do the quests"

  3. The Hildebrand quests are my absolute favorite side quest line. I even had the Manderville dance as one of my fave emotes, which means I get to have Genesis Rhapsodos dancing that dance and yes, it is absolutely beautiful. BD

  4. I have never played ff14. I've never even been big into MMOs before. Yet when all the big budget ads and the free trails have yet to convince me I think this is the video to make me try it out. As soon as I get time to.

  5. Whenever I've played what you're talking about, I'm excited to hear your thoughts on it. And, as with this video, when I haven't played what you're talking about, I appreciate how your summary and analysis helps to give me an in-depth look at something I've never/have yet to experience. Thanks!

  6. Fantastic video! And a perspective that I hadn't considered about Hildy's wacky animations! I always hear people talk up how the Hildibrand quests were a place where the animation team could practice and refine things for use at more serious moments… so that has me wondering, would you say that some of the particularly interesting animations eventually seen in Shadowbringers (to be vague so as not to be spoily) get some of THEIR shocking impact from the same sort of principle? Horror rather than comedy?

  7. An important part of the Hildibrand comedy is that in typical Japanese storytelling fashion, the stories are full of mixed moods — so you also get a lot of those "serious" RPG performances right alongside Hildy's shenanigans, only heightening the comedic impact.

(Also legitimately I think he has some of the funniest dialogue I've ever seen, at least in the English translation. The comedic timing exhibited by the text box during some of his missions is unparalleled.)
