Am I wrong? Probably.
At the end of the day its good that the devs listen to us, and give us what we want and that everyone is happy. Even at their own detriment.

My perspective is that the devs rolled the dice doing what they wanted while "battling" what the ppl want only to inevitably get forced to "give em what the want" by marketing in the end. Same issue with devs wanting to make unique jobs but have to "Battle" against ppl wanting them to damn near incarnate every job from the other FF games instead. We may yet get Geomancer literally because ppl STILL make theories of the job "coming soon, maybe, possibly".
I would like to point out that ffxiv already had concept art of male viera from 2014, when they were planning heavensward.
This was something they had been planning for a while, but changed their minds at the last second because every race so far had been taken from ffxi, and viera originated from ffxii. Au ra were only made so that ffxiv would have its own original player race.
And I can say a lot of people who saw this art were interested in finally seeing what a male viera would loom like. The gender lock didn't create the hype. It acerbated it.
I think that the gender locking of any playable race is a terrible idea. If the viera were a non-playable race then no one would have cared. But because it is playable there will always be people who say "I love this race but I really don't want to be a female" and that is a fair point. Gender locking has been happening in many asian MMOs and as soon as they reach the west there are tons of complaints about it cause most of the western audience is used to having both male and female versions to pick from in any character creator. I also think there is no excuse for making a gender locked race in terms of story, especially in FFXIV, because the story is written by the company. And even if it is a concept borrowed from another game where they were gender locked it would not have to translate to ffxiv. Look at all the other things that were brought into 14 from other FF games that have completely different stories and iterations here. In the end this is a video game and video games are tailored after the players. If the players are not having fun or something is bothering them then it needs to be addressed. TLDR: If you make any playable race it should never be gender locked. The extreme majority of players hate gender locking of anything customizable character.
Yeah, I feel FF14 has lost a lot of its lore cause of the community who did begged and screamed and even quit. Now I have supported SE for a long time and I never gotten what I wanted for the game but these people don't support SE and get what they want. Maybe it's time like this if I will continue to be sub or not
I think miqote was originally a female-only race, too? I forget.
I kinda agree with that they didn't plan to create the male Viera and female Hrothgar. However, anytime a new race is introduced in a MMORPG you should have both genders included otherwise you are just asking for requests/demands for the missing gender.
Most of this is all wrong. We were never supposed to get viera in the first place, male or female. We were supposed to get hrothgar only in shadowbringers, but the community was throwing a tantrum, so we got half hrothgar and half viera.
I kinda agree but also disagree. In one hand, I
alwayswanted Male veira to exist since I saw Females in 12 and Tactics Advance. I don't think I'm alone, the idea and concepts the race were always amazing, regarthless of gender. Then you take some of the Male Viera lore we got, what they do in the forest and the reasons they do not appear on other FF games, and you get quite a solid character someone can choose to self insert as, or just a cool character in general. As for Ronso/Hrothgar, its kind of a similar idea, but it plays with other topics and ideas. Really cool, and I love that we have something that doesn't not look like a "Human but with cat ears/ rabbit ears/ elf ears / etc" or "But small and adorable / but big / but lizard features" race in the game.More than "Forced" to make this gender alternatives, I think they saw profit on it, since we asked for it. It would be foolish for them not to make em if there's cash to be made. Also, It adds more option for them to make npc's and make them different from others, and to even explore new zones with more distinctive tribes / people living there.
My only complain about Male Viera / Fem Hrothgar, is that they do not explore they lore in the story (Maybe in some side quests I haven't done). I wish we had some backstory on Erenville, for example, talking about how living as a Male Viera was like and the reason he left the forest(assuming old Viera lore applies). I think that the only (kind of) exception to this rule was the Custom Delivery quests from Anden… kiiinda
I just want Ivallice Moogles from XII and Tactics as a playable race….we desperately need another short race
Edit: I was in the ballpark for no Male Viera because Lore, but Female Ronso should of def been a thing to add from the start. But who cares about lore when "ayaya-horny" always topples any discussion to be had. I still believe it was extremely disrespectful to the lore created, but nothing we can do about that now ya'know. Literally people thinkin' with their down-under parts and not with their brain, it is what it is. If the horny crowd can get what they want, I demand my Ivallice Moogles as a playable race, and the Bangaa!!!!
Saying that people "don't deserve X" is an immediate bad take tbh. It's a dumb starting position especially involving a product people pay for. It's never about what is """""deserved""""" its about what the consumers want vs what is feasible or even within the interests/vision of the developers.
There is no "deserving" anything however there are desires and compromises. It's not that players "DESERVE" hrothgar and viera to have other sex counterparts but genderlocking never feels good from the players perspective and feels lazy. It's not that players "deserve" viera/hrothgar hats but damn it sure does feel low effort to not have them when modders can do it. It's not that players "deserve" new playable races of any variety, it's more just an expectation set up by other juggernaut games in the industry as well as their own additions to the game.
One can defend the inclusion or exclusion of anything via any means they want. Whether it be lore, time, money or priorities but to say that something isn't "deserved" or that people are "entitled" is just an easy way to antagonize people for no reason.
I've heard similar from people wanting Garleans as a playable race. I pointed out to someone that due to their inability to naturally manipulate aether it would rule out like half the Classes/Jobs in the game, and they literally just went, "What are you talking about?! They just change the lore, say something about half-breeds or there's a hidden tribe of Garleans that can do magic! They make the game, they can EASILY change the lore to make it fit!" And I'm like, that's not what CBU3 does.
I never played 12 or later games outside of the 7 remake and now 14. To say the male V are essentially background would discredit Erinville all the way around. When he was was introduced as an NPC that alone would have signaled they had the character model to put in a playable version. Granted I don't care for the furry characters so to each their own but as fast of a fan favorite he became it was kind of obvious where they were going to go with new playable races.
Idc what you say. I like my bunboy. I have to put in the extra work to make him less femboy but I manage
i dont know why ppl have so many thoughts about these things. I didnt even think about why and if and should, cuz in the end is it bad to have both genders in it? ^^
Femgars? They're called Frothgars
I remember the lead up to Shadowbringers a lot differently. People were excited to finally see what a male Viera would look like. Because, even in 12, they did exist. People were expecting and anticipating bunny boys, and were more than disappointed when we didn't get them.
Dumb. Just say they half-assed their releases of both races and ended up fucking themselves for it. Bad take.
Femgars in all honesty i wasn't shocked that was the most predictable announcement ever it was def more furry like apose to lion like it looks nothing like the boy hroth but the male bun is litterly nearly impossible to tell the difference between male and female the amount of times i had to ask are you a male bun or a fem bun is beyond me
i think you are wrong at the begining. while yes a lot of people wanted to play viera as female,. a large portion of the community wanted male viera , and it shows at their release. i think i see way more male vieras since its release than the femal counterpart . at least it seems to me .
same thing almost happenned to the miqote….. they were supposed to be just female ( as it was to their ff1 counterpart) but the community outraged as much as they did with the viera /hrothgar and bam, the game release male miqote at release ( or close to) and i see a lot of male miqotes although , yes , female miquote is still popular.
it was a terrible mistake to release 2 unfinished race at the same time. maybe if they focused on viera at first or hrothgar, it could have been as complete , with being able to wear hats and everything, as the Aura was at release in heavensward. the other race would have been brought up in endwalker. and by now we would have gotten both races now.
You wanna know why we got them? Gender Politics and Furries who practically run the internet nowadays.
I'm honestly sick of the MMO Animal race trend can't we get a cool race?? The only race I'll accept now is Tactics Moogles so we can have another short race.
Male miqo'te and Female Roegadyn also didnt exist in 1.0, but when YoshiP took over he didnt like the sexual dimorphism of only having single gender races, which is why they were brought in during 2.0. If we continue with that logic, it made no sense for them to make viera and hroth single gender races. It was stated in an interview that Viera were brought in to please the people wanting bunny girls (Fran) and Hroth (ronso) were brought in to please the WoW players that wanted to be able to play a more monstrous looking race similar to those in WoW. I dont think the dev team expected the backlash that came from missing opposite genders and so they felt forced to add them.
Ehhhh the only issues on your thought…is that this happened once before with Miqo-te and Roegadyn. Their was never suppose to be Male Miqo-te and female Roegadyn, but to voices in the game community later on the game got it. So for this…Its no surprise, cause this happened before, but honestly this is ok cause its better to have options then none in the first place. Plus gender locking a race in a game is pointless.
I am so bored with FF14 at the moment. Nothing really got me excited about anything except Beastmaster as a limited job but that's not due out til after the next expansion.
To be fair female highlander and male miqo'te were added on ARR too this is nothing new XD (I just read someone commented exactly the same)
Also in character creation you can read about the existence of viera and their tribal rules, as well as the existence of fem h'roth =9
Besides there was supposed to be a fem h'rothgar in the bozjan story line but they twisted the lines a bit so they could just have a femroe instead! It's not that they don't exist, they are just few
