  1. Despite the flaws of 1.0, there's a few things I really enjoyed about that version. The relationship between Papalymo and Yda, the Gridania story where the elementals felt a lot more dangerous and there was a whole ritual outsiders had to follow to protect themselves, etc. Being able to use skills from other jobs was nice also. And DoL/DoH had a few super weak "Offensive skils" (just throwing rocks and stunning opponents, but I liked that)

  2. If you have a hard time grasping how bad the game was picture this: You're a big shot CEO getting a report on your new multi-million dollar MMO. One that has the distinction of being the 14th in the line of games that might as well be the face of the company. And the new director you've put in charge tells you he wants to throw the entire thing in the trash.

You probably balk and try to reason. But, this is the person you put in charge after a disastrous launch. The person you're trusting to restore your customer's trust and, arguably, your companies reputation. So, you agree. You let them start working on a almost entirely new MMO, while still updating the one that's going to end up in the trash to buy time.

Think of the cost of all that. And consider that 1.0 was so garbage that Square Enix decided that was what they were going to do.

  3. This is what more MMO players really need to realize. Just about every single MMO out there sucked when it launched.. especially in comparison to what they are now. WoW, ESO, XIV, etc all of them were terrible. Yet for some reason the MMO community expects every brand new MMO to be as good, if not better, than all of the biggest MMOs out just right from the start. Then they review bomb new MMOs trying to make it then also complain that we don't get any good new ones.. because they refuse to let anything even try to grow into a big one like all the big ones had to do.

  4. Okay but…like, can we talk about FF11? The OG FF online that destroyed lives and devoured timelines?! That game was impossible to solo, ruthless on casuals, and punished slight mistakes with actual hours of progress being taken away in an instant. It wasn't a game so much as an alernate reality job. Resources were scarce, crafting was mostly failure, and the grind for any item of value (looking at you, Leaping Lizzy) was soul crushing. I will never forgive that game for the years it stole from me.
