People in chat may have brought this up, but if you're unaware, NPC dialog frequently changes from patch to patch. Hoary Boulder and his brother have a long-running storyline that goes on through all the games entirely optional in the background, so I'd highly recommend going to check on him + his friends every patch or after every major event when you get a chance.
You should see that cutscene with Haurchefant in Japanese. He sounds very different, and I think his voice suits him better.

It is my belief that early Final Fantasy 14 NPC names were made by using the keyboard in every unconventional way imaginable.

My guess is that some of the splicing they did to post Realm Reborn’s quests (that you no doubt have been told about to death) may have played a part. I don’t know enough about the original but that may have played a part.

Regarding haurchefant, it's been mentioned in stream but yeah, he's into the WoL in most other languages. He's based on a character archetype that doesn't really exist in english, so a lot of it was toned down
