  1. Honestly the big issue is the fact that mentors are either the most patient or the most impatient people and you don’t know which you’re gonna get. “How dare you not know you should get a mentor or something.”

  2. I met a mentor in roulette when i was playing summoner. I used the phoneix skill on the mentor and they freaked out and yelled at me and told me to not ever do it again. So now i jisg put the phoneix skill on myself !

  3. I know a mentor that dies in every mechanic, skipped all story in all expansions etc. but they farmed coms in guildhests and speed ran to max level for all of their classes. I just don’t understand. Even needed to be carried through all extremes so they can unlock mentor roulette 🥲

  4. In my opinion they need to change the mentor crown to a watering can or something cause so many ppl just get it for the crown. Also make the requirements synced, running all those extremes unsynced makes it so easy to get. Anyone can do it. If memtors had to do it synced then id actually have some type of respect for them 😅

  5. So my take is thus: I wanted to be a mentor for pretty altruistic reasons, generally speaking. I looked at it as a way to advertise that I LIKE helping people. I've been playing for SO long, its joy to me to be able to guide someone, not just in mechanics in PvE content, but in answering any sort of questions they have about the game itself.
"How do I rank up my squadron?"
"Where do you turn the item in?"
    "How do you meld materia?"

Stuff like that. And I kind of lived under a rock in the community for a while and didnt know people had this negative stereotype/perception of mentors, so I was all excited about it until I got it and then I realized how people feel about it.

But I'll say this, too, a lot of the negative stereotypes are just that – a stereotype. One that players hear from other players and then perpetuate even if they've never even had a bad experience with one. Like, "Oh, I heard all mentors are bad players!" And you're like, "Have you met a bad one?" And they respond, "No, thats just what I heard!!"

Also, the toxicity goes both ways. While there certainly are bad mentors in it for the wrong reasons, some non-mentor players are kind of hateful to mentors before they've even done anything at all because they expect mentors to be perfect gaming gods and act like the mentor should always stop and hold their hand to a ridiculous degree (ie: carry them through without being willing to learn) and act super entitled about it and if the mentor makes a single mistake or maybe just doesn't remember a mechanic then its an automatic, "SEE?! MENTORS ARE SUCH BAD PLAYERS AND UNHELPFUL!"

  6. In my previous FC, a fellow member had mentor status and would afk during roulette raids. We would form party to run roulettes and she would join, get into duty and go afk. I asked her about it and she said she gets bored with the raids and doesn’t care. Also frequently talked badly about newer players. She was an officer in FC and one of the reasons I left.

  7. I used to be a mentor in HW and I'm working on getting my crown back now. I genuinely enjoy helping people and having that mentor status might make me come across as more trustworthy.

  8. When I was leveling classes I've run praetorium so many times that i began speed running it. Including to the point that I would compare which language was faster (Japanese). Anyway another mentor was in the group was telling me not to pull so quickly as a tank because we have sprouts and they're going to miss out on story or something. In a duty that can't be skipped.

  9. i had a few bad seeds encounters in years but it's definitely a rare case. It's usually VERY bad when it happens though… For some reason, when there's a particularly toxic and bad player it's often a mentor, legend or both 😂 it's so weird

  10. Pretty easy solution I found for myself in daily roulette:

Avoid ANY player with ANY sort of symbol in the name tag and you're pretty much safe…. (not if there are dragons or redmages tho… They jump after you faster than you can run and avoid)

  11. I had some rather unsettling experiences with mentors, especially when I was a sproutling. For example; people asking me to e-date them for gil or "coaching" (?) Idk, both times it was a mentor but there will be weird people in any group shrug

  12. I've been playing for maybe three months, pretty weekend exclusive due to work. I've only had one bad experience with a mentor when I guess I used limit break at the wrong time. I probably did and that might be on me but I turned it into an inside joke with my sister who was with me at the time.

'Can I limit break' or 'permission to limit break plEASE' gets tossed to her a lot from me when we play together now.

  13. There are absolutely mentors who take their role seriously and act as guides when needed but there are others who just want to blow through everything and expect everyone to keep up with them. The latter tend to stick out because it makes for a worse experience for newer players or for veteran players who don't want to rush new players and make sure they have a good time.

  14. I only mentor when requested since the time I told people to lb the tear and nobody wanted to listen and we all died. After explaining again I was accused of being rude. So now I just mentor on request and that has been better.

Just a few weeks ago, I taught a sprout DRK how to use living dead because they admitted to not knowing how it worked after they popped it during a small pull. I apologized for healing them so it didn't work and we kinda went from there.

It's really hard to balance 'unsolicited advice' with 'they don't know so they won't ask.' So nowadays, I ask first. And if they say no, I just pretend nothing bad is happening. XD

I wanted to be a mentor because I wanted to help people and I worked hard to get my burger king crown. I think there would be less bad mentors if there wasn't achievements tied to it. I don't need a prize for being a mentor. I would much rather just have people trust that my intentions are good.

  15. I've met a lot of mentors who don't care to actually help or just do some dumb shit entirely. Anyone can /get/ mentor status if they play the game long enough (trade mentor status can take a single evening to get btw if you have at least a lvl 90 crafter and gatherer). I've always had the mindset that it's sort of a joke status symbol.

  16. I went through all 2000 roulettes to get my mount and never went in again. I wanted to help people but saw many so times that people either don’t listen or don’t care. Some will even tell you they don’t care. If anyone ever asked for help I would help but I gave up actively trying to help. The people that want to get better will always do what they can to get better, including asking questions. Some people will never care and don’t want your help though. Also I’ve seen my fair share of mentors that are just plain bad or give it very wrong advice.

  17. Hey I have a question, kind of an "am I the asshole" question, so I'm not very knowledgeable on buffs and rotations and stuff but ik how to play my classes, I was in a duty roulette on like a lvl 30 dungeon, our healer, an astrologer, I saw was barely ever using their card buffs, just super rarely, like they had once (dungeon was taking awhile due to someone getting lost and what not so I had a good bit of time to see that they were barely using them across long portions of time) and when I said "Astrologer maybe use card buffs a bit more" they told me "I've been playing astrologer for 2 years bud, I know what I'm doing" I was unsure how to take it, am I the asshole?

  18. I try to give it a few times before I give out tips and what not because we’ve all been there (as sprouts). I’ve seen my fair share of elitists/quitters especially after one wipe or when they think they can’t clear. Even before I decided to get the crown, I always liked to help but after a while (post heavensward) I just wasn’t as out there because of people like them. I’m scared to use macros now and I stopped doing extreme content because of how much anxiety I got from those people 😭 Anyways I still like to help even if I’m the quiet type 😂

  19. I streamed my first night in the game. A mentor found my twitch before I even made my character. When i logged in they were hopping up and down in the exact spot I loaded in. They then proceeded to hold my hand for over 100 hours answering my every question and lending me endless aid. Even got to attend their Eternal Bonding Ceremony. Best mentor 10/10

  20. I think the only "bad" experience I've had with mentors is them leaving very quickly in a random extreme duty. I get that the rewards aren't exactly appealing for sitting through 5+ wipes, but I think it's cowardly. Personally, I'm very averse to confrontation, so me included, most mentors I see are very quiet and just wanna get the duty done, and only really speak up if they see a persistent issue.

As a mentor myself who really just wants the mount, I would not mind being sucked into HW, SB, SHB extremes, but nobody queues for those.

One of the most memorable gameplay moments for me was when I was a sprout, and nobody told me that ppl in NA don't queue for EXs, and at the end of ARR and HW, I was trying to do the quests for the extreme trials to get them out of my quest log, and I ended up tanking Titan as my first extreme with a mentor tank who wanted me to be the MT and they coached me through it, and we got it done, and I felt so amazing. It was stressful, but it was a welcoming kind of stress that wasn't super judgy. I also ended up doing Ifrit, Garuda, Shiva, and even Ravana in HW like that, but eventually the insane queue times got to me and that's when I learned that I was pretty much just dragging mentors into hell with me lmfao.
