The Future of MMO Design: FFXIV VS WoW – Happiness VS Satisfaction

Everyone and their mother has compared one MMO with another, but what is the MAIN difference? What is that which fundamentally sets them apart? Well… the focus of the game, really! Do you want to get to max lvl and do that content or do you want to thoroughly experience getting to the end of the road?

IMPORTANT: This Video is part of a stream that took place on the 26th of November which was BEFORE Dragonflight. A small portion of what I say in the video has changed regarding WoW, as I feel that Dragonflight is A STEP TOWARDS the right direction. It won’t save WoW, but it’s a good start…. thus far. A video will be published regarding my first impressions of Dragonflight.

BTW, come find me on Twitch! I stream my FFXIV journey and WoW Dragonflight, since it just launched and soon… ELDEN RING NG+1! (I am thinking of going with the Dung Eater this time, but we’ll see!)

  1. This is a weird comparison. FF14 is a WoW clone. Yoshi P even said the original release was so F'd up that he asked his dev team to play World of Warcraft and they basically copied WoW. In fact a WoW player can start up FF14 and do pretty well in combat because it's so similar.

  2. I'm a completionist at heart, and thus a goal oriented person. I lose interest and get bored if I don't have a clear goal set in front of me, which is why I never was able to enjoy playing, eg, Terraria, Minecraft or "free style" GTA.

And I found a lot of great goals you can thrive for in FFXIV. Some are more obvious than the others, but if you WANT to grind away your time, you have stuff to grind away your time. The key aspect is just that none of these grinds are mandatory.

If all I want is to raid every week to get my BIS set, all I need to start is a crafted set bought from the marketboard, some food and tincture that most statics would gladly provide for free (but are also cheap in the MB), and that's it.

I'm not forced to do relics. I'm not forced to PvP, I'm not forced to engage in pet battles, I don't even need to clear dungeons weekly for tomestones.

I'm in a quest to catch all fishes in the game, but that's something I set for myself because I like the checkmarks in the fishing log. I don't have to do anything besides fishing and feel satisfied with my gaming sessions.

The only mandatory thing in the game is the MSQ, which is also the most fun thing the game offer you. If you like the MSQ, you like the game. What you do after finishing the MSQ is up to you. Including play something else until the next patch 4 months in the future.
