FFXIV is honestly so close to just being "the world" from dot hack but there is a bad side to it at times and unfortunately just like in real life to keep the balance it needs good and bad.
I had similar thoughts on this as well. I think a lot of people feel the same way but are scared to speak up about it for various reasons. Personally, I think the "There's no war in Ba Sing Se" front the community perpetuates hold the game back in many regards.
Venues are a wildly new venture in FFXIV that has rapidly expanded in the past couple of years. A lot of people are new to it (and RPing) and feel like standard decency doesn't need to apply. Some people really do see it as a "business" when it's not a real business, it's a RP service for fun and not a money-making avenue that can be treated like a real life business. A lot of people don't want to address is simply because they don't take it seriously; "it's RPing. it's pretend. it's all fake." The worst of people you meet in RPing are people new to it who literally think it's ok to be toxic cause it's not serious. It doesn't help the community as a whole thinks of RPers as a lesser community and a bit of a joke and it's "okay" to bully them because of it. This behavior has been this way for a long time and as incidents like the billboard thing happen draw negative attention to the community it only gets worse.
Yup, any community even how good it is, always always have toxicity, dark side. Always.
xiv has the shittiest community, its only saved by their strict TOS that get you banned for almost anything that people is afraid to type in the chat, and lets not forget that they go out of their way to harass you IRL
There is definitely a hidden insidious side within the game within certain sections of the community. I played WoW for ten years and yes full of drama and toxicity but not in the same way.

Now that I finally finished: well said on all accounts. I’m so sorry about what happened to your FC lead. The toxicity that lurks beneath the surface is real. And that toxicity can exist both negatively and positively. It sucks, but we gotta expose light to it if we want it to heal.
It's the best community I've ever been a part of, and deserves all the awards it gets. That said, yeah, not perfect. lol What is ugly in the community is OOGLIE.
RP is something I tend to avoid, mostly because it seems the toxicity stems from that side of the community.
I'd disagree with your FC leader about WoW as a former 14-year player, though. I've seen people literally telling other raiders to kill themselves in WoW.😂
If it exists, it is worth addressing precisely because people shouldn't be driven away from any game. Admittedly, MMO's are a different beast. When you put millions of people together, you're going to have sloth, jealousy, envy, lust, greed–basically all the seven deadly sins. FFXIV is no different.
It's funny that, while admitting FFXIV has its issues, it still deserves this award, because of all the other MMO's, it actively tries to promote peacefulness on a systemic level. It's just that there are no utopias in this world.✌😅

yep ever since that poor girl that Asmongold interviewed about mods and RP got bullied out of the game, I feel sick to my stomach everytime people say how great the ffxiv community is. The mere hint of drama and you can see the piranhas circling looking for a chance to tear someone down and make themselves feel like better people because of it. Its gross

There are Venue Game of Thrones behind the scenes, betrayal, double triple agents, scammers(they just mix in with all that nonsense at times), sabotagers willing to break the hearts of others in order to gain an advantage in the venue wars… The was also the Lalafell Purge on that one DC, there was the Furry hate on the other DC, there was the Large Venue that sabotaged hundreds of Regular or Smaller Venues, stealing their staff, taking their open hours… and pushing them out of the game…
