So I Tried Extremes In FFXIV….

As I am exploring and seeing all the great things that FFXIV has to offer one such event is the King Thordan Extreme trial. Essentially it is a highly tuned version of the fight to offer a significant challenge to all players but its much more than just a difficult fight.

0:00 Trial And Error
0:34 An Extreme Problem
3:07 My First Attempt…
4:44 This Was Incredible!
7:27 The Death of A King
8:44 A Dragonsong…

  1. thorden is your only extreme trial…but ima going to be real it is one of my favoirtes aswell as when it was an unreal in endwalker (unreal is just old extreme tuned to be fought at max level) is was a blast to do.

  2. There technically is a very small difference between doing it MINE or not. The music drops are guaranteed in MINE, but only has a chance to drop when you do it normally. It’s not much, but it’s something

  3. Thordan Extreme is to FFXIV raiding, as the banquet is to FFXIV Story.

This may be the moment where you realize it's really awesome, but it only gets better(and way way way harder) from here.

  4. You're probably gonna like Unreal then. Afaik it emulates an old Extreme Trial at Minimum Item Level while scaling to current Max Level. We had Thordan EX for all of Patch 6.5 and I cannot say I met many people being happy about that^^

  5. The big reason people recommend MINE for the normal mode bosses is because otherwise they tend to die way too fast and barely feel like a fight. It's less to make it particularly challenging and more just ensuring you're not totally skipping mechanics and the latter parts of the fight. MINE Extremes/Savages are tough. Besides having fewer buttons on your hotbars than you would at max levels, they're about as hard as they would be on release, and usually the final bosses of expansions are a step up from the other extremes that came before it in the expansion (so in HW's case, Ravana and Bismark).

Personally, in future I'd recommend keeping No Echo, but not doing minimum item level. That way you're a good bit tankier, and healers have a much easier time keeping everyone alive even through several mistakes, but you still get a bit of a prog experience. If you're still struggling after that, then pop the echo on. The reason I say this is because, realistically, you're going to wipe a few times to learn the mechanics to a new fight, but (especially for the older fights) the echo buff can quickly start to get a bit too potent, too quickly and start undermining the fights design in weird ways. Just a suggestion, though!

I'm glad you're enjoying the extremes! They really do feel like the "definitive" versions of the fights, and some of the coolest mechanics in the game are only seen in the Extreme version of certain fights. 😀

  6. To this day I've never been able to find someone look at the tooltips for the infirmity for the Hauchefaunt spear attack and find out if there really is a different description that says "There was nothing you could have done" or something. Because I was told that once and can't really put together a group just to find that out, now can I?

  7. Thordan extreme is certainly a high for the game. The dev improved a lot in game and mechanic design so there are better trials out there, but Thordan was a certified banger.

  8. Thorodan was the last "unreal" trial of end walker, basically they scaled the damage up to level 90, and sent you in no echo min i level. It's something of a comfort food for me, but sadly those fights are on a rotation, and it's not coming back. Once you get it down it's just a beautiful clockwork fight

  9. Tanks have their own mechanics during Extremes and its normally evenly split but often tanks and healers have to respond to more mechanics. However for DPS that are use to doing nothing but damage its a culture shock.

  10. Just a slight note, Thordan EX did not come out at the same time as Thordan Normal, none of the final bosses of the .0 part of the expansion get their EXs alongside them, they get them in the .1 patch instead, they are the only bosses like this (outside of ARR) because you already get 2 EXs at the start of the expansion

  11. Im fond of thordan ex as its unreal was the first time I progged and cleared a fight in pf by myself. It was my first personal step into harder content and now I’m getting ready for Dawntrail savages next week. A great trial with just enough difficulty for newer players.

  12. FFXIV is always on easy mode on default, exceptions like Lahabrea (and some future content) that have specific gimmicks are only more difficult until you figure out the "gimmick". The game is built in such a way where you can just play the story if that's what you want, but if you do want something more challenging, it's an optional side quest for you to do.

Though, judging by discussions online, some seem to think that Dawntrail's content difficulty has increased, which I honestly don't agree with and will not further discuss because spoilers.

  13. Don't think that tanks only need to not die in later extremes. EVERYONE will get mechanics onto them. Tanks, DPS and Healers. Also the tanks often have to pull adds apart or direct the boss's attacks away from the rest of the party.

MINE has slightly bigger drop-chances for items I think, but considering that by unsyncing you can do multiple runs in the time it takes to finish one MINE run, it's not worth it for farming purposes, so yeah, practically it's just for the challenge and fun.

  14. There’s a blog post from a WoW fight designer back when Thordan EX was current, talking about how FFXIV’s clear telegraphs let them layer simple mechanics in a complex way while still being extremely readable

  15. 8:05 — Dont forget: Lahabrea was weakened from our fight earlier. It stands to reason that Thordan couldn't have just deleted him if he hadnt been.

Streamer privilage 🙂 Yes, I'm a bit jealous. When I did my first run through MSQ all my friends and gildies were yelling was "finish MSQ! finish MSQ asap!! finish it yesterday!". And so I did… which was a bad idea. I enjoyed it, make no mistake, but I saw extreme content long after I made it to lvl 80 (back then the max level). I should've taken it slower, do more of the side content like this… There is a thing to be said about the joy and elation one feels when finally killing a boss one has been working on for hours…

    Congratulations 🙂

  16. I started playing harder content with the Thordan Unreal (same fight scaled up to 90) and I cleared it many many times, so I'm glad you got to experience it as well !!
To be fair, some people are pretty bad at fighting, and/or just don't want to engage with the part of this game. I think the philosophy is to not put content in the way of the story, so the game is accessible to most people

  17. The lahabrea/igeyorhm fight was recently reworked as part of the trust revamp. Like the Cape Westwind fight it was made more relevant and much more difficult than comparable content of the time. But that's why it seems so out of place compared to the other fights.

  18. lets gooo, hope you like the other extremes there's like 7/8 per xpac!

if you ever want a taste of wow mythic raiding again savage/ultimate difficulties are closer to that hundreds of pulls experience lol

  19. You should try nidhogg ex, and the savage tier of the alexander raids! The alexander raids came out with hw, and are super fun. There's 12 of them, they work similar to the coils of bahamut.

  20. Legit one of my favorite fights in the game TO THIS DAY, which is high praise considering how awesome the Trials and Raids get from here on out.

The theming of it is awesome, it being a reference to The Knights of The Round (one of the most iconic summoms in the franchise), which in of itself is a reference to The Knights of The Round Table.

But the fight really shows why FF14's boss design is so amazing. The mechanics of the fight are really simple and well telegraphed , but it allows them to be layered on top of each other to create something much more complex. To the point that, once you've got a hang of it, Phases 1 & 2 become a formality , and Phase 3 is the true challenge.

  21. You really don't have to worry about Normal content not providing a challenge while going through the story anymore tbh. From Stormblood onward the story content gets more of a "bite" to it and becomes more challenging. Not to the point that its actually difficult, but you DO have to pay serious attention.
