So I Jumped Into Heavensward: The "Best" FFXIV Expansion… (My Thoughts)

I’ve spent some time in Heavensward, and believe me I have some thoughts…

Final Fantasy XIV is a very well constructed MMORPG, with a beginning levelling experience that surpasses any other MMO on the market. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have any complaints however…

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

More about Final Fantasy XIV:

“Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG and features a persistent world in which players can interact with each other and the environment. Players create and customize their characters for use in the game, including name, race, gender, facial features, and starting class. Unlike in the original release, players may only choose to be a Disciple of War or Magic as a starting class—Disciples of the Hand and Land are initially unavailable. Players must also select a game server for characters to exist on. While servers are not explicitly delineated by language, data centers have been placed in the supported regions (i.e., North America, Europe, Japan) to improve the communication latency between the server and the client computer and players are recommended to choose a server in their region. Regardless of server or language, the game features a large library of automatically translated game terms and general phrases which allow players who speak different languages to communicate.”

  1. Final Fantasy is not a "weeb" game. If you wanted to put a label on it, you could call it "high fantasy". It's a Fantasy game with deep history, deep lore, extensive world building, and high concepts.

Honestly, as an anime fan, there's very little this game has to offer me beyond some cosmetics, emotes, and a couple recognizable tropes.

As an FF fan, this game is my playground. It is a veritable buffet of FF references from across all FF games. It is the best version of an FF homage you could ever ask for.

As a fan of the Fantasy genre, I loooove the story telling and the world building. I find it to be super engaging and it really does make you think at certain times. Especially when you get into situations where there is no easy answer. Then it starts asking some really philosophical questions.

  2. Heavensward is great. It really is, and it's wonderful that they've added it to the free trial for people to get a taste of what the game's story can be.

It's not the "best" expansion though. It only was until Shadowbringers came out.

  3. People will call ANYTHING Weeb that has even the slightest bit of an Asian feel to it. That said FF has always been amazing. I’ve played games in this series since early 90’s But it’s always felt like people who were D&D aficionados expressing their love through slightly eastern eyes. As time has gone on and the games and animations have changed and developed that lense has gotten more and more tuned. Look at Yuna from FF 10. She definitely looks like an Asian girl. The guys have also taken on more and more of an Asian appearance or some pseudo Asian aesthetic. Developers of a certain race or ethnicity often tend to insert themselves and their culture into games. Look at games developed by Norwegian developers., most of their characters look have a Norse aesthetic to them. FF has always blended mythology from the west with mythology from the east. So the term “Weeb”, has grown to encompass any game or media with an eastern feel or Aesthetic.
Because weeb is a slang word and most people don’t even know what slang words mean they just passed the definition down to each other like a game of telephone.

  4. What does the fantasy part have to do with it being a weeb game or not? wat? I mean all the things you listed are present in animes aswell

I joined an FC and literally everyone there has an anime picture as their discord profile picture. I told them I watch anime as well and their answer was "just like everyone ff".
Imo the game 100% is a weeb game, well maybe not the game itself, but the players made it one. And there's nothing wrong with it.

  5. How does something this good exist? What did I do to deserve this amazing experience? I have at least 30 years experience in game development, I bet you have played some of the games I worked on. Some were good, a lot sold a lot of copies, but I never got the chance to be involved in something this great, something this special, and from a players perspective, this ranks up there with the greatest games I have ever played.

  6. I'm still knee-deep in ARR, and I think it's great. People talk about rushing through ARR as if it's bad and needs to be over and done with – maybe I'm just weird but coming from 16 years of WoW, I'm finding ARR refreshing.

  7. Im trying to get past through ARR, but man it's rough af, gameplay is not grabbing me as much as I want to, story is not even that interesting so far at least, need more patience lol.

  8. When people say ffxiv is a weeb game I don't think they refer to the game itself, I think they just mean the playerbase which let's be honest that most likely true, but calling final fantasy itself a weeb game is like calling almost the entire game industry a bunch of weebs since final fantasy in general is a precursor and inspiration to most of the rpgs you see today hence why I don't see why ppl also feel the need to deny their weebness its fine if anything is more than fine you are a weeb and weebs made this game and I guess that also makes me a weeb.

  9. One thing that starts in HW (at least in a well-defined fashion) are sidequest chains that have a mini-story to them. You can usually identify them because they'll have an image at the top of the quest dialogue window, also most/all of them have aether current rewards on the first step.

In some cases they're required to unlock beast tribe (reputation) quests in the zone, but in general they're a nice thing to do if you're in a dungeon queue and have another job you could get some chill xp on.
The quality of the stories/worldbuilding of course varies, but a couple are pretty notable supplements to the MSQ.

  10. HW is absolutely NOT the best expansion
It just has the best boi and your true bro both in it and that's it, the rest is kinda…… Bad
Shadowbringers by FAR is the crem dela crem, we'll be seeing the lights in your eyes when you get there

  11. Re weeb game, I don’t think people call it that because of it being a Japanese game.

It’s called a weeb game because it’s played by a ton of weebs who are the most vocal and seen in the community. And before you get all defensive go join some party finders and tell me how many random Japanese names you see.

I agree it’s a high fantasy game. But when your dark night is a scantily dressed bunny female called Yuri Kokomo, it gives the impression of a weeb game.

  12. Hunting down the aether currents was my favorite thing. Alot of times my son who passed that past February would pick me up on his whale Mouunt and I would describe how many yalms and what direction each was in n. So he would take me to get them. Also the little sight seeing areas too. So much fun. BTW though I'm not into cussing, I didenjoy your reactions and now I get why my boys loved hearing my reactions when I played.

  13. It's interesting how the experience has changed now that flying exists in ARR. Before, you gain flying for the first time in Heavensward, so it must feel very different to now lose it.

  14. final fantasy is literaly the final fantasy, you cant get more fantastical than ff. they have it all, time travel, space travel, dragons, giant robots, magic, swords, guns, giant swords, giant guns, guns that are also swords, swords that are also guns, barbarians, mummies, vampires, demons, angels, gods, living planets, other dimensions, flying ships, power armor, cars, tanks, the other type of tanks, air planes… it has it all.

also, the villains, one of their weakest villains, is a emperor who gets kills and sent to hell, kills the devil, becomes hell itself, and comes back. they dont fck around in ff.
