So I Finished Heavensward: The "Best" FFXIV Expansion… (My Thoughts)

Heavensward is finished. Done. Complete. Final Fantasy XIV has taken me for a rollercoaster of an emotional ride, and these are my thoughts on one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

Final Fantasy XIV is a very well constructed MMORPG, with a beginning levelling experience that surpasses any other MMO on the market.

Final Fantasy XIV is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

More about Final Fantasy XIV:

“Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG and features a persistent world in which players can interact with each other and the environment. Players create and customize their characters for use in the game, including name, race, gender, facial features, and starting class. Unlike in the original release, players may only choose to be a Disciple of War or Magic as a starting class—Disciples of the Hand and Land are initially unavailable. Players must also select a game server for characters to exist on. While servers are not explicitly delineated by language, data centers have been placed in the supported regions (i.e., North America, Europe, Japan) to improve the communication latency between the server and the client computer and players are recommended to choose a server in their region. Regardless of server or language, the game features a large library of automatically translated game terms and general phrases which allow players who speak different languages to communicate.”

  1. Heavensward was hype I’m about to start stormblood, but the trailer didn’t do much to hype me up like heavensward. After the 3.3 set the bar high, the patches after felt underwhelming to me. I didn’t really care about minfilia and papalymo as much as Hauchefaunt.

  2. Heavensward is a masterpiece, and it was amazing, but it did have awkward breaks in the narrative where you go back to tie up loose ends from ARR, like we're in the middle of something but wait we gotta go save Raubahn (no complaints there he's great), then other stuff, Ul'dah, search for scions etc etc. Shadowbringers doesn't have that problem, it's all a cohesive story where you're not jerked back and forth every 10-15 quests.
But… Heavensward is the expansion that has created a home for the Warrior of Light. Original three cities are okay, and Grand Companies are nice, but none have embraced us as Ishgard did. To this day I come into the Fortemps mansion every once in a while to say hello to everyone and log off there, because it's where my home is. That's why everyone were so ecstatic when a housing district was announced for Ishgard, and why it's so special: because we got to rebuild it with our own hands. No other city gets this kind of treatment because of the very special place it holds in Warrior's heart.
It's a place that took us in at our lowest, and the place where we made and lost dear friends, a place where we found a family. And let me just say: the subsequent story does not forget that.

  3. Shadowbrings easily fights Heavensward for best expo in ff14. Stormblood while fun just didn't hold up many moments that stood out timeless as the other two have. But 5.3…. Shadowbringers MSQ is easily the best of the three, but 3.3 and 5.3 fight hard for best patch. 3.3 give us hope…. 5.3…. well I'll leave it for you to see. Rather you enjoy it yourself then making a comment that could spoil the moment if you read this.

  4. Heavensward was a roller-coaster. The dead of Haurchefant was powerful but not as powerful as the next scene and never will be a day when its not like that since sadly i saw my dad in that situation and its… Something else. Ysele destroy me, the way she die had me sobing for a couple of minutes and the conclusion with Nid was perfect, the song, the ambience, everything was perfect and maybe this is not a popular opinion since you didn't mention it but the warrior of darkness gave me the more shocking twist of emotions since you start hating them and at the end they never were bad guys in their eyes, they were doing good and the struggle was so poweful that it's part of my favorite chapters kn HW.

Hope you enjoy SB, cause not as powerful but it have his moments

  5. When Shadowbringers was just releasing, they had hyped up the story quite a bit, and I was a bit disappointed in the way Stormblood had ended, so I had both high expectations and mixed feelings about whether Shadowbringers was going to deliver. The ending of 5.0 absolutely blew me away, to the point that afterwards I kinda just had to sit there in silence and process what I'd just seen. I don't think I've ever felt as satisfied by a story in any game, maybe any piece of media. Not to get your hopes too high, that's just the real experience I had.

  6. Just don't think you should power through Stormblood, it's not as good as HW but (likte ARR) is foundation for things to come. Besides that, great video, and happy you're loving the game <3

  7. I wish people would stop praising Shadowbringers as the best thing there ever was. Yes it's good, but if you keep setting peoples expectations to unreasonably high levels they might not feel the same as we did when we got to experience it without them.

  8. FF14 players sleep on Stormblood especially some of the post 4.0 content that is some of the most inventive ways of delivering a storyline I have ever seen. The reason everyone talks about Shadowbringers is because it is just different man.

Shadowbringers is even hard to describe as an MMO expansion because it is on that level. Although the music in Stormblood after hearing it will make you want to overthrow a small country lol

  9. Krojak I hope you remember this comment for years to come. You’ve got what it takes to be a great content creator man. I look at your videos and wonder why you don’t have more viewers. You have a good attitude, great insight, good quality and this is just the beginning of your journey.

  10. I think the best part of Stormblood is that you finally decide how your character reacts to the things happening around them. There are some response options that are truly like, "wow, the warrior of light woke up today and chose violence."

  11. Stormblood was a good expansion, but I feel like post stormblood was much more enjoyable for me storywise. All the moments that I liked about Stormblood was Post-Expansion

  12. What stormblood lacked in Story it made up in worldbuilding tenfold. Stormblood was a expansion that made FF better in every facet and brought so many QoL features, it was a "you had to be there to understand" type of release.

You know you’ve made a step in the right direction with your game when even six years later, someone can say a single quote and the players are brought right back to that moment with everything they felt during it

  14. At this point I just wish all the veterans would just shut up about the feelsbringer. It gives more satisfaction when new player come up in FC/LS chat saying things like: "WTF Why no one warned me about this???"

  15. Heavensward was pretty much the high benchmark. I won't go into detail about my thoughts on Stormblood (will save that for your eventual "Stormblood, finshed… (My Thoughts)" video, but i will say i learned to appreciate it a lot more a little while after i had finished it. Loving your journey so far!

  16. While I absolutely agree with others sentiment that Shadowbringers is my fave storywise, I really wish your chat wouldn't set your expectations so high. There are many people who consider heavensward their favourite expansion, and for good reason. So… I hope you read this and temper your expectations accordingly. I'm disappointed in the chat. It sounds like they are setting you up for a fall.A HUGE part of why many of us really liked .. any of the content.. is because we went into it knowing nothing. No one to overhype it. All experiencing it for the first time together.

  17. The Stormblood story might not be as “personal” as its bookends, but it had the task of simultaneously adding new content and addressing plot points that had been left open since 1.0… As someone who has been with the game for so long, it was very satisfying to finally get closure on some things that might not hit the same for a player just starting the game.

  18. Stormblood is really good but not as good as heavenswards but I think you made this video a bit premanuterly. You said about how you don't know if Lyse redeems herself, but I find the ending to 4.0 just as good as Doma Castle.
It's just that getting there is a slog through the Ala Mhigo part, but that's what the expansion is about, liberating AM.

  19. I have to say that shadowbringers is the best because of one thing, it's your story, ARR was more about the scions, HW was more about alphinoe, SB was more about hien and lyse, but ShB? that one's about you, your character, so it hits a lot harder, the impacts are all on you, your sacrifices and you coming to terms with fate (you'll know what I'm talking about when you get there).

there is a lot more to say but I think that was the deciding factor I want to get into all about the antagonist of 5.0 and everything else but I must hold my tongue to keep it spoiler free.

  20. Yo real talk who else was cheering and laughing their ass off when Hraesvelger pulled a "BEGONE, THOT" on Ysayle when her delusional ass tried to get in that dragon's pants by claiming to be his dead wife that he ate lol

  21. When the Archbishop left after The Vault, I was angry. When Nidhogg was defeated and Dragonsong played, I teared up. Heavensward is always one of my favorite stories.
