it's a high-level gag, but I love it: even as the Shadowhunter, you can sum up Gaius' entire arc with "such devastation… this was not my intention"
it's just that now instead of Lahabrea cackling at him about how he fucked him over, it's the emperor, zenos, and his kids, and he just keeps on staring at the effects of what he did and saying "but wait i didn't think any of the shit I did as a conquering warlord on behalf of the empire was going to blow back on to me"

The Stormblood finale literally caused heart attacks when we started it. All of the Scions falling one by one at random to some unseen force, Alisae panicking due to Alphinaud being missing, only to see Gaius Van Baelsar cradling his limp body, Garlemald at the gates of Ala Mhigo, the reveal that the empires of Allag and Garlemald were created entirely by a single Ascian for the sole purpose of causing chaos, the reveal of Black Rose and it's potential to cause another Calamity…this was the best way to transition into ShadowBringers
I love how Rich doesn't know that Yshtola is just using matoya as an alias, This expansion will completely obliterate his mind from what happens. He also has so many "theorys" but they're all gonna be revealed in due time. He's also spoiled himself of the Exarchs identity and still doesn't know XD
