Ranged DPS UTILITY in FFXIV | Current State… it's OK?



I want to talk about the state of Ranged DPS Utility in FFXIV in current times ( Shadowbringers ). This video is MY OPINION and MY EXPERIENCE; if yours is different I’m actually curious to hear so lemme know in the comments below 😮 but by no means am I trying to try and say this is facts just my experience with em D:

I know you have touched upon both of these skills in the video with similar examples, however Improvisation and Curing Waltz are honestly a lot stronger than you'd think, from personal experience in fights such as e11s and e12s, I find Improvisation and Curing Waltz to be incredibly powerful and COULD actually make or break a fight if you plan this effectively with healers, you can potentially shave off an entire GCD heal from healers allowing them to spend that GCD to spend on dps on each use, which is really huge and I think healers really do take notice, as when I swapped to Samurai for my reclears earlier this week I found they often allowed the party to die to raid-wides I used to cover using Curing Waltz and had to get a new feel for how to handle things without it. I really do appreciate how you touch up on combining it with Improvisation, I often find not many dancers realize the buff lasts for just shy of 5 seconds or so upon use, so weaving it during gcds is something I'd love to see utilized more for general raid-wides as a 10% boost to things like Medica II regens and hell, even the Everlasting Flight effect of Summon Phoenix can do wonders even if it's not directly noticeable. I do overall agree with wanting the return of our lost utility such as palisade, mp recovery and the works as a part of me dearly misses the old effect of Bard's Troubadour, even if it could be argued to be less effective than it's current state and one of my big hopes for Endwalker is the inclusion of more role skills and perhaps more/tweaked utility for Bard.
    Now speaking of Bard, the party buffs provided through songs feel incredibly lack lustre, in theory I know they're powerful, 100% uptime on three different cycling buffs, a 1% attack boost, a 2% critical hit rate boost and a 3% direct hit rate boost, however these numbers are just so incredibly small that it's hard to feel like they're making much of a difference at all. Battle Voice feels like the only substantial party buff available, boosting the direct hit rate of all party members by 20% feels incredibly huge, though Bard being exempt from both their song buffs and Battle Voice feels incredibly strange in my experience. Foes was weird to use due to it having a cast time, but it was such a unique ability in the sense of effectively planning out when to use it in a party to maximise the effectiveness of it was incredibly fun, alongside pairing it with refresh in Stormblood to recover your MP even faster to get another use out of it, adding onto this having your caster throw you a Manashift to either extend the duration of foes or provide you with MP to get another full usage out even FASTER is something I miss incredibly. I mirror your opinion on Warden Paean, it's strong when it is utilisable, however situations where you can use this skill are so far and few in-between that it's incredibly hard to acknowledge its existence, I often find myself having to remind healers it's something I can do if I ever run something like DR.

  2. they need to give them another utility imo, maybe make it so the speed buff works in combat (maybe with a truncated duration). I like the idea of skill based utility and a well placed speed boost is along those lines imo.

  3. I’m of the opposite opinion that ranged need more support. I think the ranged are fine how they are currently constructed and simply need to do a bit more personal damage.

  4. I think the only ranged DPS that can really be considered utility is Dancer. Not only is Curing Waltz one of the only cooldowns that can realistically make a difference, Dance Partner is just way better utility than Bard's songs which makes me sad as a Bard main. Every time I play bard I feel like my buffs barely contribute as much as say a Ninja's trick attack or a Dragoon's eye and ngl it feels kinda bad

  5. Bard's song buffs are so small it's almost like they're not there, it's out here giving players a 1% crit rate buff in shadowbringers, i wish there was like a bard spec that would trade all the party wide songs for more damage dealing based songs

  6. As an old bard I miss being able to recover MP for casters, or boost tp. I always hopes they would grow and have songs that would boost different attacks, or heal, or boost defense you know.

  7. I'd like for bard more focus on the songs. Song rotation rn feels nice but it be nice to maybe swap out the esuna song for another party song. The healing actions of bard are nice in like a dungeon, but if it was a party wide like tactician, i feel it be far more useful. Minne with sch though with their dissipation is nuts for adlo deploy tho

  8. I was expecting you to mention Monk's Mantra, what is in my opinion better then a lot of ranged utility skills. How useful idk, I'm not a Monk or Ranged main.

  9. The biggest thing SE needs to change is making more of the utility "feel better", or be more noticeable by the party. Things like big cures, big shields or big temporary damage boosts are noticeable; damage reduction, negating a single debuff, and passive stat boosts tend to go unnoticed in the middle of a fight. Doing this would make all of the ranged dps classes feel more impactful, but I'd argue Dancer comes closest to this so far.

  10. Wanderer’s Paean has a great use in Delubrium Savage. You only have 3 seconds to esuna it off the tank. You can precast Wanderer’s Paean and negate that mechanic. This ability was more useful when poisons, bleeds, and burning / frost damage was dispellable. I use it a lot in older content. Nature’s Minne is great in Cloud Deck. When you have the three big auto attacks, tank buster, 3 big auto attack combo, Nature’s Minne allows a simple Regen or Aspected Benefic tick hard enough to handle the healing, or have excog/dignity/tetra rocket the tank health back. My point is that they’re niche cases, but it’s up to you to fund those cases. (Like no immunity for E10S umbra slash, Nature’s Minne can help you just heal through it!)

  11. I would say that Tactician (and others) are extremely useful due to times when the boss does dmg but is untargetable. E12S phase 1 is a great example since you can't addle/feint/reprisal Lions or statues, but you can Tactician. I do think 120 sec is too long however.

  12. Head Graze is really good when you take into account its range. There are some encounters where you'll need to interrupt a cast while the tank is dragging an enemy. Depending on the situation, the tank might not be close enough to actually use Interject on the enemy and so the cast will go off. The fight I'm thinking of specifically is E7S.
