Pyromancer Reacts to 'FFXIV 1.0 In A Nutshell'!

The 1.0 story really came across to me as nearly-essential knowledge for truly understanding ARR. Especially when doing things like Coils. I loved it. The cinematic teams at Square have long been incredible at what they do, especially those in the FF line. I find myself in awe whilst watching, but decidedly unsurprised in the very same moment.

  1. Man, do Coils. Seriously. Even if you don't want to do it properly (even though you can easily find a competent party due to "streamer privilege") you can just ask a couple of lvl80s to carry you and enjoy the story/lore. Do Crystal Tower before that. Its lore ties to Coils.

  2. Lore wise, this game is great and the best part is that it's all in-game.
Some stuff you do get more explanation from the lore book(s), apparently, but the game does most of the heavy load and you can do without the book.

You'd also be interested to know that in the lodestone website there are side stories you can find that are released in chapters that further add to the expansions. They are more backstories about the world itself and other stuff, just make sure you read them once you completed the expansion though, as they do contain spoilers if you dive into them before hand.
The newest one is called "Tales from the Twilight" and it is on chapter 2 of 5. Do not read these ones, obviously.
If you are done with ARR completely, you could read the "Grand Company" and "Tales from the Calamity" ones.
Best part about all this, they are all free!!!
To clarify how to get to the side stories on the site:
Go to Lodestone main page > Look under "Play Guide" tab > "Side Stories and more". Enjoy!

  3. Basically, in 1.0 while the adventurers were killing off the Primals their aether wasn't returning to the land. It lead to an investigation of Dalamud and the determination that all the aether released was being pulled to the moon, empowering it and accelerating it's fall. Essentially, the moon was getting overcharged and the output exceeded what Nael envisioned. It also allowed Bahamut to Temper Nael, turning Nael into the new transmitter. By the time he was put down, it was too late and the moon was much too close to the planet. The City States and the Circle of Knowing determined that a ritual of calling upon the 12 Gods at the point closest to the moon would potentially be able to save the land from it's impact. Unfortunately, the Garleans figured this out to and moved to secure the site.

This led to the big battle you see in 2.0's cinematic. Basically, the City State's thought they had more time and were unable to secure the fields for the ritual before Bahamut broke free of his prison empowered by all the Aether he had feasted on, all the souls he had devoured. His reign of destruction was unlike anything either side was familiar with and the Circle of Knowing attempted to do the ritual without the proper set up in a last ditch attempt to save everyone. This failed and terrified the Garlean's as basically the 12 were theorized to have the power to basically Temper the world. Many prominent souls were teleported away from the site by the remaining power the Circle of Knowing had collected, some taking years to finish their teleportation. Any player character from 1.0 is one of these. However, the land which should of been barren and drained by Bahamut was instead invigorated and renewed. Aether flowed very freely, massive crystals erupting from the land or taking to the air. It was as if Eorzea had been flushed with Aether beyond what it had once contained. This is one of the main mysteries 2.0 opens up on.

  4. Oooh, I somehow never saw this video. I thought it was just another joking look at the game quality, rather than a lore recap. I had managed to piece together most of this lore from quests and retrospectives, but I hadn't realized that the floating islands in Heavensward was caused by Nael summoning Meteor. That really helps put that area and the final Heavensward zone into context for me.

  5. What's great while watching this video is that I know a lot of your questions are answered and expanded upon by the game itself. I would HIGHLY suggest making sure to do all the 8-man raid series as you unlock them, as they provide TONS more lore, some of which even comes back to play in later content.

Also, since you can rewatch cutscenes and even replay completed quests, you can always go back and pour over things in the game to put together the lore drops.

  6. One neat thing this doesn't mention were the strange dreams that players would receive in the weeks leading up to the fall of Dalamud if they logged in after having previously logging out in an inn.

  7. I love the content man. I remember sitting with word open on my second screen taking notes when I started back in HW and after 7 years of playing seeing it all come to a head this thanksgiving is going to be both insanely satisfying and sad. All questions you have now and more are touched in the story and very little side content is required to understand 99% of it. They forget no detail and spare no explanation to break down everything they present.

Some side quests though does give more general lore and history to the zones so doing side quests later on further elaborates what you learn in fun ways that are little nuggets of interest.

  8. The in-game<->merch lore in this game is top tier. For one thing, it's a spectrum, not parts of a whole. What I mean by this is the merch follows the flow of the game's world building mechanism element of having a tooltip w/ flavor text for **everything**.

This means that lore books, even the encyclopedias, are NOT presented linearly. Rather, when you analyze cutscenes/dialogue, make note of tooltip flavor text, read the encyclopedia front to back, and make *food from the game in real life* by owning the official cookbook — you are playing the role of a scholar, pouring over tomes to answer questions about the realms' cultures, eras, religions, magick systems, heroes, villains, economics, politics, sciences, music, art, and… foodstuffs.

You're in for a treat, a truly immersive experience for any lorehound. Have fun.

  9. Good luck with the timeline, the devs won't tell us the current year anymore – it's all time-bubbled to avoid what WoW has going on with Xpacs in different eras…but I hate the timebubble. I want to know how long the war takes, I want to know how long my character has been in the middle of all this.

  10. THIS is why I love FF14! Because they give us great story & give us answers slowly over time! Which in turn makes us have even more questions! To me FF14 is the best MMORPG of all time, PERIOD! Tome of me to level up my Ninja! Great Vid Pyro, keep up the great work! Also again "Welcome to the FF14 Family!" 😉

  11. Please play coils – it will answer a lot of the questions you have from this video. Also there is voice acting and its the 2.0 voices so it's best done sooner rather than later, though I know you've already started Heavensward.

  12. One of the theories as to why the beast tribes were suddenly able to summon the primals again is because when the Agrius crashed into Silvertear Lake, all the aether that was trapped there flew out into the world, so it was basically super easy to summon without needing lots of crystals.
Silvertear Lake is suspected to be some form of well or vault of aether where it was either locked up, or it just naturally converged there

  14. something i never knew about nael van darnus i learned, scroll down if u wanna know since its not mentioned in game

The one we know as nael van darnus was not him, but his sister acting as him. Her brother the real one died in messe dup circumstance and she went mad, assumed his identity since shes clad in armor and the rest is history. Highly advise watching a video on it, pretty cool backstory.

  15. I think I understand now, the grand spell was meant to contain Dalamud and prevent the impact and they never foresaw Bahamut's reawakening, which is why the sealing spell fell short.

  16. In FF7, after a long, hard-fought battle with Emerald Weapon, I was almost out of MP and ether, and for some reason, I couldn't cast Knights of the Round anymore. So, I just cast Bahamut Zero, and that's what it took to kill Emerald Weapon. Ever since then, Bahamut's been my favorite.

  17. Thanks for watching this, as I never knew such a video existed! It was great going back through 1.0's story with Louisoix's narration. I love his voice they got for 2.0, one of the few ARR voices that I enjoyed.
