“Such Devastation… This was not my intention!”

Is Praetorium in Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn the worst experience in modern MMOs? Maybe. Taliesin finds out why it is so bad, for players new and old, and how to fix it. Thancred, Gaius and Ultima Weapon approved.

  1. I was really enjoying FFXIV / A Realm Reborn right up until that last Castrum/Praetorium sequence. It's such an unbelievably terrible experience that I almost flat out quit the game. Endless cutscenes of villains monologuing awful monologues, endless running through meaningless trash to get to the next awful monologue, boss fights lasting exactly 2 seconds before we move on to the next awful monologue, a whole vehicle section. And god forbid you're a bit slow and miss the elevator.

I'm glad I stuck with it and have recently finished the MSQ. But holy shit Prae is a god awful experience.

  2. Yeah, I think they should make praetorium (and the one other long main story quest roulette instance) into single player instances that you run with your NPC scion buddies, while replacing the MSQ roulette with a 'key story dungeon' roulette that only includes dungeons that are an essential part of the main storyline. This would also serve as an adequate tutorial and preparation for the trust system later on (as well as showing you that the other scions are useful and valuable and not just making you do all the heavy lifting).

  3. The Sylvanas boss in wow also has a long cutscene that plays out between the first and second phase of the fight. If you skip it, you find that your character is unable to move for the duration of the cutscene so that others can watch it. The stun debuff can end early, however, if everyone in the raid skips the cutscene.

  4. The boss fights used to last a lot longer, but power creep over time has made it so even synched L50 jobs just absolutely destroy the bosses compared to even back at the start of Stormblood, much less original ARR. So buffing their health is definitely a good idea, though you'd have to also be careful with things not being too long or hard (TWSS) for the rare all-sprout ilvl-45-geared group.

Personally, I preferred the skippable cutscenes, even as a new player. I didn't mind just watching the cutscenes in a chain and missing the "action" in-between, then running it again later as a "veteran" to see the other parts. They social dynamic basically made it two separate dungeons, an all-cutscene dungeon for sprouts and an all-action dungeon for roulettes. Making scenes unskippable forced both sides of the dungeon together in the worst way, as highlighted here.

  5. Having done this thousands of times most of this doesn't come up. It was insanely good when it was current. Being ARR they had no idea the issue of this being a daily random dungeon. Or honestly if there would be a game after ARR being the hole 2.0 had to dig out of. Doing any MMO content 3 expansions old is worse or purely unavailable. They learned from this. Again something other games don't do…

  6. the Avatar video sound nice and the baldurgate amazing. about this well? jrpg are more story that gameplay; FFXV is a jrpg disguise as mmo like swtor from the west!

  7. I've only done it once, and I was lucky enough to be in a grp where the veterans told us what to do.. but yes, I can see it getting really old, really quickly. I also agree on the voice acting.. it's really bad 😂
BUT, the game IS fun and I just discovered samurai, making it even more fun 😁

  8. While I love FF14's art style, I couldn't get over certain visual elements (all the playable races seemed too similar to me: humans, tiny humans, big humans, chonky humans, humans with cat-ears, etc) and making my White Mage run around for EVER in nothing but a nice shirt and tall boots before giving me a proper freakin skirt. And when Lor'themar stopped voicing Urianger, I was too crushed to keep going.

  9. I am really eager to see what you guys can do with a diverse range of subjects as opposed to being focused on a single one. Especially if we do get a few tidbits of comparisons between mediums. Keep up the good work you lovely nerds!

  10. haha wow that spoilerino background. (Don't blame you, I use it as my wallpaper.) But also, Praetorium is a good thing for watching youtube while just getting handed a level after 40 minutes. Castrum Meridianum, tho, IS TERRIBLE. The cutscenes are too short to afk, and too long for such a boring cutscene.

Also yes jesus christ the website is terrible why.

  11. i think your edit is pretty good and is definitely in line with their new direction for dungeons and cutscenes. As you mentioned, Praetorium is quite old, being the end of ARR, and then was brutally edited in a bandaid to make it kinda work for sprouts and veterans. They just haven't had the opportunity to go back to review it properly, thus the bandaid solution has remained. If the team was to go back and review Prae, and do it properly, it will be an entirely new experience tbh.

  12. I am totally okay with this being the complaint. There are worse problems to have. I too am on my 3rd account. The biggest issues are buying the game, and a single roulette duty you MIGHT get. Yes there are more issues (I actually PvP, like a lot) but they have shown willingness to fix things.

  13. My very first time in the Praetorium, you could skip the cutscenes. Me, wanting to watch the cutscenes, literally saw no actual gameplay itself, as the rest of the group burned it all to the ground and left me chain-watching cutscenes. I didn't even get to wander empty corridors.

As a veteran running MSQ roulette, the unskippable cutscenes really don't bother me. You get a s**t-ton of XP and poetics as compensation, and I'm happy to watch YouTube videos while I'm running Praetorium. And with every job at 80, I've seen Prae LOTS. I'm definitely not going to claim it's my favourite dungeon, but if I had to choose between huge amounts of trash mobs or unskippable cutscenes between boss fights, I know which I would prefer.

I get that everyone's experience is different though, and I'm sorry to hear that your experience with it was so bad that it scarred you for life. Your suggestions for tuning the experience are good though, and I would certainly like to see more FFXIV content here!

EDIT: Also, "worst experience in MMORPG history"? Just mention "School of Hard Knocks" to any WoW player that never enjoyed PvP, and watch them curl up in the fetal position. Especially back when the violet proto drake was the only viable 310% mount for most players…

  14. Interestingly I'm playing on JP servers. I've never seen anyone do the first elevator skip. THey kill the first adds

Also, the first time i played i missed the Ignition key and markers were left. I've seen that happen multiple times.

What i would like to see is them getting rid of it as group content and do it with the same system as you can in SHB, with trusts. It would make the whole process feel more epic and you wouldnt need people to run it with you, removing the need for veterans to queue.

  15. You know the Praetorium is the first dungeon that I got frustrated with. The mech key I actually just learned about from your video. I thought it was bugged. I used the catch up portal to skip it.

  16. On my first run, back before the cutscenes were made unskippable, I didn't know where/how to grab the card key to ride Maggie. I said it in chat, and all I got was " …. " followed by getting kicked

  17. DAMNIT TALI! Don't make videos like this! (It's awesome, though.) I know Praetorium is a problem, but with you so easily giving an EXCELLENT fix for it, it just makes me WANT this fix, and I highly doubt it will be implemented. (Just like most of your excellent WoW fixes that Blizzard should have listened to!) AAARRRGGHHH!! (Excellent video as usual, though – feel free to make more FFXIV content!) ^_^

  18. Honestly always thought that a prae rework would require removal of other players, but yours sounds good! Will add that ARR things are harder to balance since the massive boost in gear from i49 to i130 is way higher than any other level jump, though this is something thatll prolly get changed in endwalkers… maybe

  19. Blame the ps3 players. Don’t expect modern day mmo experience when playing ARR. many aspects (separate windows for Minnions, mount pages, some many key binds wasted ect ) are so stupid which makes it Fascinating, just like when we played wow in vanilla and TBC.
For those complaining the battle ground is bad( it still is and tank gets 1shotted easily ) , welcome to the true PVP — the market board!
But if you enjoy games like Yakuza 0, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 ect. This is the game for you.
    True JRPG experience.

  20. The ironic part is, if you had actually spoke in chat about any of those issues, the veterans who are numb from bordem will go out of their way to hand-hold you with paragraphs on how to solve any of those issues, because they literally have nothing better to do.

I'm honestly surprised you sat dead for a whole boss fight and no one asked you if you got lost.
