FF14 New Player after 15 years of WoW – First FFXIV Trial, Chocobo's and Grand Companies – Day 4

FF14 First Impressions:
I’ve played WoW for over 15 years but given the state of WoW right now and the lack of content, I’m trying FFXIV for the first time and documenting my journey throughout the game.

Throughout I will be comparing FFXIV to WoW and referencing the differences between the two. Obviously, I do have some bias, but I will try and keep an open mind all the way. I don’t want to make claims of which game is better FFXIV vs WoW, but I will compare the differences throughout.

Also if you have any tips for new players in FFXIV please let me as I’m probably making a lot of mistakes. Everyone is welcome to join the discord too, I’ll link it in the comments if you want to chat

  1. Welcome to the Maelstrom! Till the sea swallows all!

Note you can change your Grand Company. You just have to start over in rank. But you keep your rank in the one you left. So when you come back you can pick up where you left off. Its a great feature.

  2. There's a fishing event in Limsa Where you get a group of players all fishing together. There is a meta for the bait usage, a friend had it written out, but most groups will call out the proper bait if you ask. its easy to get like, 10 levels in a single round

  3. Nobody tell him you can dye your chocobo…

(its a little trickier than that, but you can in fact customize your bird color with a little time, patience, and a friend with a stable)

  4. You can ignore materia basically until max level, it's pretty much identical to gem sockets in WoW except you can remove it from gear with a chance to get it back. Also, as you wear / use gear it "spiritbonds" and when that maxes out you can basically just summon materia from it for no penalty.
To TLDR spiritbond, if you use a piece of gear enough you can get free materia from it.

  5. Small tip about the retainers. You can assign classes to them and send them on ventures.
It's missions they do while they are away and take a number of real hours to complete and at the end they give you rewards. So if you have old equipment, you can give it to your retainer.

EDIT: materia is a very simple system. Gear have slots, you put materia in and it boosts the stats of that equipment, but since the game has 3 expansions already, the gear you get quickly gets stronger than the challenges and many times the game caps your gear stats when you're doing lower level dungeons for it to not become a complete joke, so there's no rush to learn it. It will only become really relevant at max level.

You also gain materia for free. Your equipment has an xp bar, once it's full white you can right click it and choose "extract materia" to get a materia of the same type as the equipment. If it's a materia from a gear for crafters, you get a materia that boost stats for crafting and so on.

  6. About Materia: don't worry about it until endgame. You'll have higher level gear and it helps to round out the stats. If you're interested in raiding endgame content, you'll want to pay attention to it then. <3

  8. There is no trash in raids. No need to waste ur time. By time u get to raids the game almost recognizes your power and its like why throw some random fodder in these raids hes the champion of Eorzea!

  9. Materia can be completly skippef until you get to level 80, they are very similar to gem slots in wow. Every grear will have a certain number of materia slots. You can meld the materia to the gear to gain substats.

The level of the gear will determine the rairity of materia you can put in.

And every trial is a 4 man boss fight with super cool mechanics and all unique. Usually every trial is tied to the story. For example the first expansion you are playing has…7? Trials and then harder versions of those trials later on.

  10. Well thanks a lot my guy….hearing all your positives and enthusiasm towards the series and seeing your sprout progress is something I'm now admittedly invested in…Can't wait to see more…Keep up the good work and progress

  11. Ifrit was the turning point in the story for me. That is where I became very invested in my character and what was going on 🙂 It was also a milestone in being able to get my new GC Chocobo.

Please don't worry about the choice you made! On my main character, I chose the Twin adders because I feel like Gridania is my home, but many people love the aesthetic of Limsa, so the Maelstrom is probably (across the board) the most popular Grand Company to join. If you ever have doubts, you can change companies, but you lose access to GC specific items (because you are no longer representing them).

As for the Retainers… The Market was a very different place in 1.0 but their main function here is glorified billboard. They sell items for you and can be taught to level a job or class you yourself are doing. There are some minions that ONLY come from sending retainers out on quests if they are the right job (I have a fishing retainer because I want the fat cat minion).

Also… the FF community is VERY welcoming. Don't feel bad about the gifts you're getting. I am betting most of them are extras that people have that are either not worth much on the market board currently, or they just feel like giving away. I, myself, did some gardening and made some minions. Since they were cheap, I didn't feel they were worth selling on the market board, so I ran around Gridania and randomly gave them away to sprouts.

  12. My only issue is the combat… It reminds me of vanilla wow. Very basic tab targeting. Not a lot of movement, not a lot of contingency options, kinda thoughtless.

Kinda reminds me of the underwear inspector episode of Malcolm in the middle.

  13. I always find it funny when ppl say they dont understand materia, but fully understand how accessories work lol.
Im like, LITERALLY the same thing.
Theres a requirement to equip them (accessories have character level, Materia has item level)
There's empty slots in which you put both of them into.
    They both raise stats.
    the end.

  14. Use your retainers to sell items on the market. The items u get from killing mobs that u spoke about last vid
is all used in crafting, also as a carpenter I would sell the stuff u craft. Compare prices and try to go 1 gil under the cheapest price so you are at the top of list.

  15. Hey Marty, your day 1 video happened to pop up in suggested videos and I started watching up to day 4 so far and it is refreshing to see a new player thoroughly enjoy starting their journey in FF14! It’s great to see how excited you are and trust me, you’ll be floored the further you go 😁. I’ve played since beta ARR and took breaks here and there but please continue to document your progression! It’s been fantastic to watch as a FF14 veteran 😁

  16. People shouldn't skip because characters and events from this early on are still brought up in 5.55 lol..

EDIT: Don't bother with materia until endgame.

  17. I just noticed that Raubahn has A HUGE similarity to Libertus from FF XV: Kingsglaive. Holy crap. And I'm thinking about playing this again. I played WoW up until Battle for Azeroth, but took a break around Mists of Pandaria to play FFXIV (I'm a legacy player), but stopped playing since my job at the time was too demanding and I couldn't raid anymore. I hear so many great things about this again and am really wanting to give it another go.

  18. After getting my Chocobo I ran around by foot for two hours and continued the Story because I thought that I can‘t mount in the areas because the icon was grey. After like another hour I checked my inventory and saw that I need to learn to use the Mount before I can ride it LMAO! Played 10 years of Wow but still fucked this up

  19. As a tip for retainers: give your retainers jobs you intend to level and send them on ventures once you can do them. You can get neat things from ventures, which you can either keep or sell through your retainers. Your retainers will level up as they do ventures but they can never be a higher level than you are in the class you give them.
