  1. Toriyama was a monumental figure. He made single handedly one of the most funny and inspiring series, he can remind you to have fun and be youthful but also standing your ground and believing in yourself. We're at the point now where everyone knows about DragonBall, DragonBall Z, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, and the list goes on.
Huge loss what a goat and forever a legend.

  2. Yeah its always a sight to see with this community. Much like here people will come together to honor/respect someone who passed away. A VA for someone in HW passed and the same thing happened in front of their character. Even as small as players passing, others will come together to WALK across the games map from beginning to end of ARR for them.
This community is just great through and through.

  3. The first time I saw the lineup, I was confused. I didn't know the news yet, and it all seemed strange to me. After learning about what happened, walking through Ul'dah was a profoundly bittersweet moment; seeing all the people paying homage to a legend. Even changing worlds didn't change the scenery; it flowed everywhere.

  4. People forget that without Toriyama, we probably would not have communities like this.
His illustrations helped sell what is arguably the foundational RPG game of Japan: Dragon Quest.
It’s thanks to that title that the market for action RPGs opened, and a little known creator named Hironobu Sakaguchi was allowed to develop a game of his own, known as Final Fantasy.

  5. I wasn't there, but when Carrie FIsher died, a vigil came together on Alderaan in SWTOR. These, while sad, are true moments that bring communities together.
I never was a real Dragon Ball fan, but I tip my hat to the man who created one of the most influential franchises that still holds up to this day

  6. Sadly I'm unsubbed so I could not participate in the vigil. I do remember attending a similar event, which is a vigil for Miura, the author of Berserk. Hundreds of Dark Knights were there.

  7. I love the idea of this, but after 2 years of playing the game I can tell you half those people don't know why they are sitting there, they just saw the crowd and joined in.

  8. The sad funny thing is only thing people know him for is dbz. He did so much more. It's kinda disappointing. People do it just for the clout. Using a man's death to make videos for clicks. Kinda fucking disgusting tbh.

  10. Destiny 2 players did the same thing when Lance Reddrick passed away last year. Players paid tribute by standing guard in front of Zavala like knights beside a king. It's amazing how the community comes together to pay respect.

  11. This happened with the death of the Bezerk writer/artist as well as with the passing of a FFXIV English Voice Actor….

With the death of the Bezerk writer, everyone was lined up along the streets of Uldah as Dark Knight's with campfires.

With the death of the FFXIV VA, everyone was lined up outside a certain house as paladins with a certain shields. (im being intentionally cryptic here as going into more detail is spoilery territory for FFXIV's story)

All instances, the campfire Minion was used.

The Dev's initially added the campfire as a fun idea for people to RP with out in the wilderness and such, but weve been using it for years as a way to 'pay respects'.

  12. "How is this orchestrated? Is it planned" –

Nope its never 'planned'… Generally one or more people will hear about the passing of someone, and they will go to either Uldah or one of the other cities (or in the case of the FFXIV VA, the place their VA'd character resides), bring out the campfire, and sit there. After a while, people will ask whats going on when they see the campfire (as that has become out 'symbol of paying respects'), word will spread of the passing of X, and more and more people will show up to take part.

Death touches everyone at some point. It's mostly those that understand that which participate in vigils like this once they are made aware of it.

  13. Toriyama definitely had influence to Final Fantasy. Hinorobu Sakaguchi, the father of FF met Toriyama and took his advice to make FF in first place. So quite literally would be no FF and therefore no XIV without him. Plus you had Yoshi-P that worked on DragonQuest games before XIV which like Chorono Trigger, uses his art. XIV as you saw had direct event hence the slime hat, Mugthug helmet and a golem minion.

  14. Xbox sprout here.
I was shocked yesterday, just logged in thinking that would be just another day. I sitted there for three hours if I'm correct.

This community is something that I can't described, I feel that I'm going to stay in this game for a long time.

  15. As far as I know the vigil for the Heavensward voice actor was the first one. You’ll know him because he narrates the expansion with his fantastic voice. The creator of Berserk died a few months later and now it’s just something we do. For the VA it was paladins mainly, for Miura it was dark knights, and for Toriyama of course it was monks. It ultimately doesn’t matter if you have the job but it helps the mood. 🙂

  16. We did this on Goblin the other night. Hadn't heard about it if it weren't for Novice Network. I was sad about the passing of the guy but seeing people coming together like this absolutely drove me to tears. It was like a road was made just for him. Such an awesome community. ❤
