Paladins In Final Fantasy 14 vs World of Warcraft : Will The Real Paladin Please Stand Up?!

How is the Paladin class represented in the two most popular MMORPGs? I try to explore the differences and similarities of Paladins in Final Fantasy 14 and World of Warcraft. It’s interesting how the class is represented in both games.

Here are some timestamps:

Paladins in World of Warcraft : 1:16
Paladins in FF XIV : 11:24

  1. Interesting. Looks like WoW is much more focused on utility than FF14, the only thing in FF that can remove stuns or slows is esuna which is a healer role ability. Really makes me wonder about the differences in encounter design. I haven't played any WoW but maybe that would be an interesting video. How do the dungeon and raid mechanics differ?

  2. Facinating comparison. Thank you for sharing this with us. Paladin and other jobs used to be much more customizable back when ARR was currently. We used to have this called the Sub Job system where select skill/spell you have learned from other jobs were available for use. Not everything was there but enough to customize your tank. Paladin had shared spells like Cure, Protect, Esuna, and Raise. For skills, they had throwing dagger from Ninja, eye for an eye a discontinued skill that raises accuracy, and few more I can't remember.

  3. I find FFXIV Paladin disappointing. It's my favorite fantasy class and FFXIV's implementation is disappointing. WoW's is my favorite though. It's probably the only MMO where Paladins can be damage dealers.

  4. You did forget one thing for the FF Paladin Iron will. Once you turn it you keep threat all the time. Same thing goes for the other 2 tank classes. They are named different but they have the same function. So in FF you never loose threat as a tank when you have those abilities on. It does not matter how much DPS or Healing they are doing you will never loose threat. Pretty neat function. It allows everyone to get right into what they need to do with no need to slowly ramp up DPS or Healing

  5. Felt like you took waaay too long to get to the point of things… Next time i would suggest writing down the list of Dot Points you want to talk about, Practice the hell out of it then make a video… You sounded like the kid who just got put on the spot to do his oral presentation at school when you hadnt done much of it cause you were too busy playing games on the weekend. Nervous, forget things, remember things was hard to listen to.

As for the differences, they are totally different games and without going too much into the rotations you dont cover much about the classes, while all the utility of the WoW Pally is good, half the time it is not even used.

While FFXIV PLD doesnt have as much utility as WoW Pally, it did up until Stormblood expansion when they decided to overhaul the classes and pretty much take out all the Utility that was again, only being used Hardly Ever. So what FFXIV did is take out the unnecessary stuff that people were only using occasionally, and made the class more stream line… WoW did something similar with the Talents, but in WoW there is usually only 1-2 builds that work, everything else is pretty much just sub par if not useless, so no one uses them.

There was a time in FFXIV that the customization of class was done a lot more than what WoW's does… You used to be able to allocated extra stat points, there was Cross Class abilities that you could mix and match and come up with a version of the class with the extra skills you liked… But again, people only ever used certain abilities and so FFXIV streamlined it.

WoW pally is just Rotation, hit things when off cooldown or proc, space out the main attack…
FFXIV PLD is Melee Phase rotation – Magic Phase — Melee / MP gain rotation phase — Melee Rotation – Magic phase.

  6. The UI from controller is much easier to see than the keyboard set up, which is something wow doesn’t have sadly.

You can just plug the controller support and use key board, which is the best way to turn off your brain on abilities

  7. Tho it isnt pally specific, you did miss interject–the silence/interrupt that tanks get, and also Arms length which slows enemies when they hit you. As in auto attacks abilities and spells take longer, so tanks get hit less.
