  1. If it makes you feel any better, when the full Shadowbringers trailer came out, we also had no idea what was happening despite having context of the plot since it was released before the plot hook at the final quest – they split the final patch story to not give away too much for hype reasons. Given this is the norm for every patch, it was a special case with shadowbringers due to the shocking events happening to the main cast right before that.

  2. For a bit of added context: The generic dude who you constantly see in these trailers is meant to be YOUR character and with the character creation your own Warrior of Light can be any gender, skin color or fantasy race you choose (if cat or bunny ears are your thing.) While the game is an MMO with a heavy story focus, the trailers for each expansion try not to spoil too much of the story and are pretty much just teasing new locations you'll see and experiences your character will go through in the new expansion.

While the Shadowbringers and Endwalker trailers do go a bit more heavy into the story, these trailers REALLY aren't meant as promotion for new players but are rather fan service to excite fans who are already invested in the characters and story of the games. It's actually advised for new players to AVOID watching these trailers because without context they lose much of the strength and excitement behind them, not to mention the spoilers rampant throughout the trailers.

  3. Imagine that each of these final fantasy 14 trailers as a introduction of a book series. Sometimes it starts you from where you left off at the end of the previous book on to the next book of the series.

  4. I still think it's wonderful that you're willing to enjoy the trailers to our game even if you're in the dark on the lore! I appreciate people trying new things! The lovely people in your comment section have been helping out too I see! <3

  5. These trailers aren't meant to tell the story of the game , rather they are meant to present and tease new things that are part of their respective expansions, locations, classes, new appearance options, new races and such.

  6. Since you like writing and reading fantasy books i think you might want to consider this game free trial a go honestly. It's A LOT of reading and little actual gaming until you finish the main story plus it's very beginner friendly. I know you are not a gamer but it's never too late to become one ;). It starts very slowly and the community is one of the most welcoming to newbies.

  7. The big thing about the Shadowbringers trailer is that it involves a lot of story context for what at that point was a couple hundred hours of story, so it's sensible that it might be a bit confusing if you've never touched the game before. But here's some context:

The story starts with the character in an unknown land being assaulted by an 'angel' (there's a lot to unpack there in the actual story, but at the time this released it was a lot of information we as players didn't have, so we'll just say angel for the sake of not confusing the issue). Each time he flashes, he's changing jobs.

The first scene is a forest in that same land being assaulted by enemies. It's not too difficult to understand I think, the woman is saying that until her friend (the PC who is represented by the character who shows up in all the trailers) returns, she will protect that forest.

The fat cat place is very much a Pre-Revolution France sort of place, where the nobles lounge and chill while the people suffer. Below where they are relaxing is a prison, where white haired man (Thancred) is rescuing the little girl from the evil folks what run Pre-Revolution France analogue. It also serves to show off one of the new playable jobs, Gunbreaker (they swing around a sword that has a gun barrel on it).

After that bit was showing off the Crystarium (new place we can visit), where the PCs spend a lot of their time during the expansion. The bunny woman is honestly not an important character or anything like that, she was showing off the other new Job, Dancer. (They literally dance around the battlefield while throwing chakrams that magically return to them after being thrown as long as they maintain their steps).

The last little bit is the Crystal Exarch kind of monologuing as he watches the Protag finally finish the fight with the 'angel.' For the purpose of the trailer, it appeared that the character was embracing the powers of Darkness. What actually happens in game ends up being significantly more complex.

    I hope this explanation helps!

  8. Just adding to the comments, the trailers are kind of intentionally vague. Because the story is such an important part of the experience, and there tend to be a lot of cliffhanger moments, I think they design these trailers as to avoid spoiling the story, even if you ARE playing the game but maybe aren't quite caught up. So there is a ton of context required to really understand what's going on.

The short versions would probably be: Heavensward, you were framed for poisoning the Queen (the little girl) to a city that's been fighting dragons for ages, Stormblood, you're essentially trying to dismantle the British Empire by liberating/uniting nations from all over, and Shadowbringers, you travel to a world where "the balance between Light and Darkness" has been upset, but the twist is that there is too much "Light" in this world, and it has rendered it mostly a barren wasteland.

If you go into Endwalker, the context will be; you've been trying to avert the end of the world, which has been heavily prophesied. An event literally known as "The End of Days" is upon you, and so it takes place in literal final days before a sort of "armageddon". You and your homies are all traveling across the globe, trying to figure out anything you can about it and avert the crisis.

  9. FF14 trailers don't really follow traditional trailer rules. They are made mostly for the people actively playing the game who understand the story conveyed during gameplay, so watching them as an outsider is going to feel like absolute nonsense.

It's honestly kind of terrible because if someone playing watches ahead they actively spoil themselves on big plot twists

  10. FFXIV is an online game with years of gameplay and storytelling between each of these trailers. When a new "chapter" of the game is released, they are called an expansion – Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, etc. These are each a trailer showcasing the expansion. They share many of the same characters and take place in the same world, but each is focused on its own story which is why, from an outside perspective, they seem to have no connection to one another.

  11. Hey HannaH … love this video 💖 Your question at 12:52 : what are we doing in this game? Can´t be explained quickly. And thus you are confused, understandble. For the players those trailers are like an augury of what awaits us in the next expansion (New races, new areas, new combat systems aka jobs, new bosses, also partly new clothes or house options) This makes the trailers incomprehensible for non-players. But I loved watching you going through that confusion. Take care 🤗💖

  12. I won’t send angry comments. I will just say that they don’t reveal much of the story in the trailers because they don’t want to spoil it, but each expansion has over 60+ hours of story gameplay to it, so even if they did try to put the story into the trailers, a 6 minute trailer would never be able to do the story justice.

  13. FF14 is the only story based game that does strong women correctly. It's fantastic how every character in the game was well written. It's also the only game that managed me to shed some tears. It's an incredible game.

  14. One things for certain, yeah, you definitely need the big plot points of the actual game to understand half of what's going on, the trailers show the end of the previous expansion, and then the beginning of the next, although some bits on the trailer are definitely focused on 1 bit to hide other parts of the story for players to find for themselves

Which, best story I've experienced, even if you don't play the game, seeing the story itself would still be great to do

  15. I think the Heavensward cinematic got the same reaction from a lot of people that you had. If you don't know the story from playing the game, then that cinematic meant nothing to you.
Stormblood had nothing to do with the story. It just highlighted classes you can play in the game like Monk, Dancer, and Samurai.
This is a very story driven game but you get the story via playing the game. The cinematics that introduce the expansions don't do a great job of explaining any much of the story.

  16. So you know nothing about the game and the literal dozens of hours the story takes, and are confused about the expansion trailers. Hmm, shocking. 🤣 It would be like watching the last 2 minutes of a movie and expecting to know what's going on. Or reading random paragraphs in a 500 page novel.

  17. I've noticed that the more story a game has generally the trailers are very vague, whereas multi-player only games like R6, Overwatch, valorant etc. have only their trailers to tell as much story as they can to make up for the lack of it in the game.

  18. You just tried to understand 8 years of storytelling spanning literally 100s of hours of gameplay based on the trailers alone. XD Frankly, I would be very concerned if you DID understand anything XD

    Reply
  19. It's understandable that you don't understand, each video builds on the game's story, which is potentially 100s of hours of gameplay and story between each video. It's kinda like watching the trailers for every other season of a huge long running series.

  20. Seems to already be a lot of comments explaining the current story, but essentially, at the end of Flames of Truth , the stand-in for our character, Derplander (the guy in all the trailers) is teleported by Louisoix (old guy in the first trailer) 5 years into the future. The battle DID happen, and the result was Louisoix sacrificing himself to kill the dragon (seemingly) and you can see the effects of it in the game. I'm not entirely sure which is correct, but you start the game at that moment you were teleported to the "future", or the now "present", and perhaps even a little bit after that. Details aside, the Heavensward trailer takes place AFTER you complete the rerelease of the game. So there's about a 100-150 hours of story in between the Flames of Truth and the Heavensward trailer (or like 400 hours for me). The actual time passed in the story of the game is up to interpretation, but some people say it's been about 2 years.

  21. you should take a look at Guilty Gear Strive ! it's the latest game in a series of player versus player fighting games that basically invented the "anime fighting games" niche genre.
They have amazing music, a great storyline (yet a bit convoluted lol) and the recent ones have amazing cinematics
You can probably find most of it on youtube, character trailers, story trailers, even full story cutscenes can be found i think

On another note if you liked watching the evolution of Doom games over time then your reaction to the evolution of Guilty Gear games since 1998 would be very interesting !

  22. Since you mentioned it, there are actually plenty of races in the game, but since the focus is on the stand-in for our character, Derplander, it just looks like they have one race and skin color. Derplander is a Hyur (essentially the human of the game) and more specifically, a Midlander, which is the lighter skinned Hyur. There are dark skinned Hyurs called Highlanders as well, but they're not exactly "black" people nor are the Midlanders "white" people. They both have a wide range of skin colors, just like real life, and skin color isn't fully indicative of race in the game anyway. There are multiple playable races that exist within the game: Elezen (essentially elves), Lalafell (dwarves but more like big gnomes); Hyur (humans), Roegadyn (BIG people), Au'ra (dragon people), Miqo'te (cat people), Hrothgar (big cat people), and Viera (bun bois and girls), and most of them have two tribes to choose from. The most distinct features between the different tribes of each race of people are their height and range of skin colors, but not much beyond that. One big thing to note regarding race and skin color in the game is that every race has all tones of skin color. In real life, you wouldn't be able to meet a non-mixed dark skinned Caucasian, even if he was extremely tanned, but you can have a pretty dark skinned Hyur (or you can have my character, a grey-blue skinned Elezen). In the game, beyond skin tones, the thing that makes them stand apart from each other is the clothing and region they're from. In Stormblood, you meet a nation of people who have darker skin because they live in a barren wasteland with some desert areas, but even so, there are people of all skin colors and races in every region. For example, the big dude who got his arm chopped off is from the same region as the girl wearing the Red outfit, and her dad is actually very dark skinned lol. What's interesting is that her dad is a Highlander while she is a Midlander. Anyway, the point is, there aren't any traditional races of people in the game. There are similarities to real life ethnicities, but skin color is not unique to any race in the game. It's a weird take in my personal opinion, but it's also a fantasy game, so it makes sense that the developers would want people to have the freedom to design their characters any way they like.

  23. Obviously its been said in other comments, but the trailers aren't there to give you a story when it comes FF14. They are there to show players new areas, new jobs(classes), important characters, etc that are coming up in the next expansion. The guy with the axe who puts on the dragon armor and the samurai and fighting on the hand are all one character. He represents your character in each expansion. He's just a place holder for you. Watching cutscenes and stuff you'll get an idea of the story, but there's a lot. Like 10 years of lore and stories that connect and reconnect with tons of side stories. Its a lot, but its been an amazing game and story. Ive been playing since Heavensward came out.

  24. The problem with just watching the trailers and not knowing about the story in game is there is usually about 2+ years worth of story context that you wouldn't have. So A LOT has happened between the death of the giant dragon in the first trailer and the introduction of the smaller dragons.
This isn't to say I don't enjoy your reactions, though. I just know you'll be confused so I don't mind all the questions and confusion.

  25. "I thought this was going to be a full story" — It is. You aren't missing anything. The real target audience is the players who will have all the background information, from playing the game, that you're missing. For non-players, it just needs to be eye catching and maybe catch their interest enough to try.

  26. Just a note on the girl in red's outfit being 'impractical' ….. If i remember correctly, 'loose' clothing with flapping/wavy sections at specific places around the person were actually 'part of' the martial arts in some aspects. They were employed to 'blind' the opponent to what your own body was doing.

  27. "Dont know where in the world this is set…. its likely not the real world… buuuuuut… lots of white people".

Ironically….. i never actually thought about that till now when it comes to Korean / Japanese games/manga and such. It may simply just be a "well there's not many other races around" type of thing. Gotta remember.. not 'every' region of the world is as 'diverse' as places like America or the UK. Even to this day. So it kind of makes sense you wouldn't see much 'diversity' in the art either. Though, the game DOES offer plenty of color choices for everything from skin to hair to eyes, so the Dev's themselves make sure to include it as options for the players. But as for major characters and the like… shrugs cultures make their 'heroes' to be just like themselves. Nothing 'wrong' with that, its just the way things are 🙂
