Nobody Understands FFXIV…

FFXIV is not your traditional MMORPG. It is something that can be put down and picked up at any time and there are no content gates that keep people hooked 24/7. Chad Thorsen discusses the pros of the game being designed this way and how even the developers encourage you to not play if you don’t feel like it.

  1. I keep fucking saying it:

FFXIV is a single player RPG with MMO elements- And that’ll be doubly so in 6.1. I choose to only play this game for my own reasons, I do not feel compelled to keep my sub up if I’m bored and waiting for content.

Tho even in the content lull I still find things to do every day like leveling alt classes and weapon grinds- Or roleplaying, or putting on full theatrical productions! This game has so much god damn stuff to do its insane!!

  2. That's not really true, you'll be surprised how many FF players only log in once in a while to do certain things (ex. raid, FC events, etc…) and play other games. My static team for example, only log in during our raid days. Half of us are playing Lost Ark on the side and other Elden Ring. For me, I don't play anything else because i simply have no time.

  3. I for my part want to give you a big thank you for playing the game. My wife watching you play and react has got her to make a new character and start all over just to go through the story once again. Now we are running around getting into the shenanigans we used too and love it, Thanks man

  4. seriously, Yoshi-P even stated that people should go try and play whatever they want.
I actually give Elden Ring a try, an I think I havefun. After I get used to die a lot, that is.
(Thou must live, die, and know.)
and still I have time to do something IRL, the thing that I should have done ages ago.

Of course, upon your return, they will give you a beautiful flower.

  6. The mentality that you have to main this game and play only this game is something people who have played FF14 for a while just dont really have its something the game just sorta melts off of most people and is a big part of why its so enjoyable because you know you can play it for what you want and be done when you want there is no treadmill to keep running on. Is there plenty of content to keep you playing for a long time if you want to do it all sure but each thing is so separate while being part of a cohesive whole that you never feel like you need anything you dont like doing.

  7. Dont think i really ever encountered someone saying "you must play this 24/7 and only this" but i suppose by the laws of probability, that extremes always exist

  8. I have a confession. I only picked up FF14 to fill a void until my most anticipated game came out. Which it did, and now I shall never return.

Sarcasm aside, a lot of people in my FC have actually stepped away to play other games with the intention of coming back later. I check in now and again to do weeklies and clear my armory chest in preparation for grinding all the jobs.
Personally, I've never understood how people can be satisfied playing a single game indefinitely. There's something I can respect about that level of dedication. I'm one of those people who is constantly jumping from one game to the next and only ever comes back to the ones I really enjoy. FF14 is one of those games.

  9. That mentality of you have to rush/keep playing is not really a common thing in the playerbase
I guess when a content creator strays away from it, the "fanbase" gets worried they're losing a chunk of players as not only the creator and its viewers might be less involved with it, which is mostly true

However people that just normally play the game usually stop playing to do other stuff, the people that suffer from the FOMO thing is mostly people coming from other stuff where that was the case, and had to "catch up" to do stuff and think it will be the same here

  10. The whole design philosphy of FF14 is that you can jump back in at any time and not feel like you're falling behind

Hell, Yoshi-P himself has encouraged players to occasionally take breaks from the game and that they can unsub at any time

  11. 0:48 Yeah that's so awesome about this game. That you can always go into old raid content or other content with "Min iLVL" and thus it is always relevant… sure you wont get the best top end current gear from it, but you will still have challenging content and fun stories.

  12. What you're going through is exactly what Quazii mentioned in a video of his about how WoW left him unable to play other games. But with FFXIV, he's now able to enjoy playing other games.

And after trying out too many live service/gacha games, I even further appreciate XIV's ability to let you play at your own place. Yoship is a treasure to deny all those predatory practices like you mentioned to keep his game good. I think whether you decide to slow it down to either stream XIV more occasionally, or do like Asmon for taking a break and coming back to it afterward, are both entirely acceptable and respectable choices.

If I could surmise why people have this "don't leave" aspect to XIV, it may be that for a long time, XIV didn't really have streamers that tried to keep engagement with others, maybe a handful, so they don't want to go back to those times.

The only way you Have to keep playing is if you own a house anyway :p

  13. I believe Yoshi-P and his team made this game for people to relax, to enjoy it whenever, wherever they want. And I am thankful for that design.

I am right now actually pausing my subs due to work but I will surely come back when Island Sanctuary got implemented.

  14. It is not true that it is what the community thinks. Honestly this kind of discussion is really strange for me. Coming from someone who plays the game since ARR launch and follolwing mostly YT videos for guides and live letter discssions (reaction videos of the MSQ was not really a thing before), i never really recall this type of discussion where a video was made just to explain something which was always been a practice of the community … play when you want to play it and recommend the game to other players thus the meme "Have you heard about the critically acclaimed MMORPG" was born.

  15. This is so true. I've been catching up on a BUNCH of videos/creators between raiding with my static (a recent development, but it's a BLAST) and I've had time to job hunt and even waiting on a callback for an interview! The FFXIV staff have always valued life/play balance, and this couldn't be more true than now. Excellent video, and maybe now I have time to catch up on MORE VODs o|-<

  16. While I get your point, I feel like part of the experience is approaching the game however you prefer and there is no "right" or "wrong". You can play just that if you want, you can step away from it if you want as well. Whatever you choose it will never be wrong it will be your choice no matter what people in chat tell you — and on the other hand, let people approach the game however they want even if it doesn't fit your vision (as long as it remains… healthy)

  17. I have to some what disagree with the goal post not moving.

Although it is true that the goalpost ultimately doesnt move.

I have had the hardest time trying to find players who would try doing synced extreme/savage trials as well as Odin. These are things I've always wanted to try synced. But never got that chance because it is damn near impossible for me to find a wanting party for them.

Its a definite Shame because I love content and want to experience everything the game has to offer no matter the challenge or hardships faced. And I cannot seem to do that with out a dedicated group of players who want to experience it with me.

But yeah for the most part the goalpost doesnt move. Its the players that refuse to show new players older content that move the goalpost.

  18. There was a few streamers I followed who did nothing but FFXIV. Recently some of them have branched out and I think that's a good thing. I actually have no idea how anyone only plays one game and has a main game. The devs did not want to make a forever game. They want people to play other games. And thst is exactly what people are doing now

  19. I myself find it hard to play another mmorpg type game next to ff, been there done that didnt work for me. but i can and do play plenty of other games single or multiplayer. Harvest some corn in FS22, get angry at the fact i suck in pubg, sink a ship in world of warships and more :3

  20. I took a month off in Jan/Feb, I resubbed for the latest event and have only really been logging in a few days a week for the Moogle Tomestones. As long as you don't buy a house, you don't have to stay.

  21. I’ve played since launch and don’t know anyone who says or feels like you have to only play xiv. We all take breaks. As a streamer you may get people who react negatively but I think it comes from a place of fear. Fear that their streamer will quit their game and leave them behind; and let’s be honest it’s a fair reaction because streamers tend to FOMO their games all the time. Most variety streamers will play a game for a week at max and then never again.

  22. You totally have the right view of it man. I think the feeling you're describing is extremely common among the playerbase at large, but I would imagine that being a streamer you inherently attract more of the "FFXIV only" crowd haha. But yeah play whatever, FFXIV is always there and doesn't punish breaks. That's what makes it so easy to continue !
