DESCRIPTION:
Final Fantasy XIV[b] is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix. Directed and produced by Naoki Yoshida, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 3 in August 2013, as a replacement for the failed 2010 version of the game, with support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and macOS releasing later. Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the fictional land of Eorzea, five years after the events of the original 2010 release. At the conclusion of the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut escapes from its lunar prison to initiate the Seventh Umbral Calamity, an apocalyptic event which destroys much of Eorzea. Through the gods’ blessing, the player character escapes the devastation by time traveling five years into the future. As Eorzea recovers and rebuilds, the player must deal with the impending threat of invasion by the Garlean Empire from the north.

The original Final Fantasy XIV, released in September 2010, was a commercial and critical failure. In response, then-Square Enix President Yoichi Wada announced that a new team, led by Yoshida, would take over and attempt to fix the issues with it. This team was responsible for generating content for the original version as well as developing a brand new game which would address all of the previous release’s criticisms. This new game, initially dubbed “Version 2.0”, features a new game engine, improved server infrastructure, and revamped gameplay, interface, and story. The original version shut down in November 2012 and was followed by an alpha test for Version 2.0.

—————————————————————————————————

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. Set in the Warcraft fantasy universe, World of Warcraft takes place within the world of Azeroth, approximately four years after the events of the previous game in the series, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.[3] The game was announced in 2001, and was released for the 10th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise on November 23, 2004. Since launch, World of Warcraft has had eight major expansion packs: The Burning Crusade (2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists of Pandaria (2012), Warlords of Draenor (2014), Legion (2016), Battle for Azeroth (2018), and Shadowlands (2020).

Similar to other MMORPGs, the game allows players to create a character avatar and explore an open game world in third- or first-person view, exploring the landscape, fighting various monsters, completing quests, and interacting with non-player characters (NPCs) or other players. The game encourages players to work together to complete quests, enter dungeons and engage in player versus player (PvP) combat, however the game can also be played solo without interacting with others. The game primarily focuses on character progression, in which players earn experience points to level up their character to make them more powerful and buy and sell items using in-game currency to acquire better equipment, among other game systems.

  1. Ya know, I forgot to mention this, so here we go! FFXIV drip feeds its content in smaller chunks, but you get that content at regular intervals. WoW releases its content more up front, but than you also have to wait a longer period of time for new content. Which is better, I guess that's really up to the player and what they are looking for!

  2. What the only thing I am a bit shocked at is he wants a RENOWN TIME GATE IN FFXIV. When that system sucks in World of Warcraft. All Time Gates suck but the two-week wait for Normal Raids -> Savage Raids are only always a thing for the very first tier. It's like this is the first time he has ever done an FFXIV expansion release since they have a much better release schedule than the usual 'stuck in Mists of Pandaria for 1 year and a month' content droughts.

  3. I’m suspecting this guy skipped cutscenes or rushed msq exited for raids that didn’t come for 2 weeks because SE wants us to not do that 😅… maybe not but that’s the vibe I got from the complainants.

  4. I giggle when I hear about "hardcore" PvP in a tab targeting mmo.
It is just my opinion, but if you want PvP, play a moba, a fps or a fighting game. Their systems are specifically made for that thing.
Honestly, I don't want 14 to focus very much on PvP. PvP brings toxicity, whining, constant need for balancing and a mentality of "efficiency over fun". Let WoW keep all the "hardcore PvPers", casual fun if much better imo.

  5. For the life of me, I don’t see how that guy did everything in the game that quickly and is then bored of it. There was someone on Facebook that played all the dungeons and collected all of the various gear sets prior to Endwalker as a thing to do. I’m not going to lie, but that seems fun because you can gauge yourself on how long it takes to get certain gear to drop, as well as any minions or mounts that drop.

  6. The pvp in FFXIV is more arcadey. It's fun for what it is, but it's not like something you take seriously. A less esoteric example is Heroes of the Storm versus League of Legends/DotA. Yeah I like HotS a lot but I'm not about to start sweating on it.

At any rate you already covered crafting. I usually play FFXIV how yoshi P said to play it. I'll do what I like, stop playing for awhile, and come back for a patch. Well. Usually. Sometimes I just log in to fish. Recently I've been going hard in the crafting and leveling up a few jobs for the first time ever. Started another Anima weapon too

  7. Do people not realize that the PvP in FF14 is basically just side stuff? That you can choose to do whenever, also more raids and dungeons will come. Just like with Shadowbringers when Pag and Nier came out.

  9. This just sounds like someone who really doesn't understand the design of the game. Right now we're in the sort of "warm up" period where they wait a few weeks to release savage in the first tier to give people time to do stuff without having to worry about rushing to endgame to prog savage asap. This is when everyone is taking their time to do msq, trying out jobs and how they've changed and deciding what to play, leveling gatherers/crafters for making gear and consumables for raiding, grinding fates for shared fates, etc.

You're right, they're leaving out a ton of content they could be doing. Didn't even mention ex trials. All the side content. And even if you're a hardcore player who doesn't care about side content, for someone newer like them there's all the old raids and things you can do synced/min ilvl and they'll still be a fun challenge. That's all still relevant for people seeking challenging content because of syncing unlike WoW. And of course there's ultimates.

The only things he's right about are the dungeons, less bosses, and pvp. But honestly, none of those are really a big deal because:
    1. There may not be harder dungeons, but the ones we do get are high quality, and you could easily argue that ex trials fill the role of content that's harder than normal dungeons but easier than the hard raids. And imo, m+ is really not that great. Systems where you do the same things you've already done but with a handful of annoying modifiers that don't do anything interesting but just make it arbitrarily harder by numbers (more health/damage) or by hamstringing you (healing debuffs, stacking dots) or are uninteresting (extra random aoes) are honestly some of the most uninteresting difficulty design I've seen in mmos,
    2. There may be less raid bosses, but they are unquestionably higher quality. Story, presentation, and arguably also mechanics are way better than most of WoW's bosses. You get so many bosses in a WoW raid, but maybe a handful of them are actually interesting and worthy of note.
    3. Pvp is honestly a joke in any tab target mmo, even WoW. Even Asmon said if he wanted a serious pvp game, he'd rather play an fps or something like a moba over WoW pvp. WoW pvp has literally always been about who can cheese instagib who first or who can chain cc who more.

Speaking of Asmon, yes he still plays. Don't know where they got the idea that he doesn't. He's just playing at a more relaxed pace and not pushing msq as hard since he's been having to deal with his mother's passing. He's been playing more as a way to relax and take his mind off of things on his second channel instead of his normal channel where he does it more to entertain.

No idea why they would complain about Renown, and then ask for it later in the same post? If they want stuff to progress, there's alt jobs to level, gathering/crafting, shared fates, etc.

You're right, many people have played WoW for so long that their definition of what mmos are IS WoW. Which is apparently a game where the only thing that matters is raiding. People forget that mmos are really supposed to be more about being living worlds. Where people can not only be heroic adventurers, but also relax, interact with people in various ways, and have other progression besides the core progression of power gains.

  10. The poster talked a bit about WoW story with Shadowlands and did not mention anything about EW story. Makes me suspect he rushed everything to get the end game as in WoW. There's likely other games that are a better fit for them.
Criticism is somewhat valid but FFXIV does not cater to a single group of players. Striking a good balance between all is challanging which might leave some feeling left out (I love GC and squadrons but not much has happaned for a while).
Maybe it'll be more substantial in subsequent expansions with increased budget/marketing.

  11. The only complaint I have right now with FFXIV raiding is that the fourth circle's whole vibe is just off. Many missed opportunities with mechanics and the environment such as teleporting us to different places as shown in the cutscene. The music also doesnt really fit well for an end of tier raid, it doesn't feel like we're going into battle or hype at all, definitely the wrong genre. On the other hand, if we compare it to e4 all the elements in that raid are more cohesive. We'll see how it is in savage, but from what I see the loot system doesn't look promising in savage especially if you're doing it on PF.
