Feelsbringers never dissapoints eh?
Ryne: "I know I haven't exactly been pulling my weight until now"
Me after she said that: Ryne, trust me, you've done more in this short time you've been with us than our Minfilia did from 1.0 through all of ARR.
It seems I found you at a perfect time! Shadowbringers is my all-time favorite expansion of FFXIV, and probably my favorite story arc of Final Fantasy as a whole…and that's saying something. So I shall watch your journey with elation in my heart as you see this story to its end.
Oh and Ran'jit was referring to the Minfilias when he spoke of his girls…he did care for them in his own way. The game sure knows how to answer some questions and then giving you even more to wonder about. Does Emet-Selch speak the whole truth about what happened to his original homeworld? Why does he seem so content to watch you defeat the Lightwardens? What is his actual name? What is Ardbert's destiny, the reason he was left behind? What is Urianger up to with this "secret plan" of his? And what exactly is the Exarch's deal? What does he look like under his hood? Who is he really?
The lore is just so complex and deep in this game, it can really be overwhelming sometimes.
The scene with Halric was a very subtle thing. He blinked. He never blinked. The light aether of the land was seeping into him, slowly, slowly turning him. It's stopped now. He showed the first real sign of life he had in a long time with that one blink.
God, the whole arc with Thancred, Ryne, and Rhanjit was so damn good. You noticed it too, but I really love that they designed the Thancred/Rhanjit fight to feel grueling. My hands were shaking at the end of it, and i had to take a few minutes to calm down before continuing haha. Such an amazing part!
Well hopefully by now you've understood why Shadowbringers is so beloved.
But then it gets better.
Oh man I can't wait til the next videooooo
Oh yeah, this is roughly where the feels really begin to kick in. Enjoy, because it doesn't really let up from here. Shit's going bananas now.
Just gotta say I love how in depth and proper your recap episodes are at the start.
1:01:35 Ali told us that in normal circumstances a person's either would slowly revert to equillibrium, but with all the light in the world it would just keep tipping towards light till they changed. With the night returned there won't be any passive transformations anymore and they'll slowly, SLOWLY recover.
1:07:08 Every streamer I've seen loves that line.
1:24:20 And thee is the core of it all. The Ascians do not consider beings who only have souls 1/14th the size they consider normal to be living things.
1:36:05 Meol is people!!!! /dramatic arm raise I never get tired of watching people do that part.
1:48:33 He raised all the previous Minfilias, whom he saw as his daughters, and then lost them. He's seeing them again in death.
1:59:00 "We're gonna be close to the end of 5.0" Hahahahahahahahahaha… no.
Remember I mentioned the Trolley Problem last video?
Thancred saw both Minfilias as daughters. One would have to sacrifice herself for the other. How does Thancred even make that choice? He mentioned it back when we met up with Urianger. If you asked him "How do you want this to end?" and a silence fills the room. He doesn't know what he would choose. He also knows he shouldn't choose, because in the end, it's her choice.
When she chooses herself, Thancred supports her choice, even though it means our Minfilia will die. Thancred is willing to give his life, to the point where he basically stops his heart in the fight with Ran'jit, to let her have the choice.
It wouldn't have worked, narratively, had we faced Ran'jit and had Thancred go to say goodbye to Minfilia. Thancred needed to face off against Ran'jit in this Battle of the Dads. It needed to be the slog that it was. The story needed to show that he was willing to die for her, and the fact that he survived showed that he was willing to live for her.
That is why the Lightwarden is named Storge. The Greek word for familial love; the love between father and daughter.
The entirety of Twine/Ahm Araeng just hits way too hard, even going back through it, be it Magnus, Thancred, Minifilia/Oracle, Minifilia/Ryne, or The trolley crew, all the way to the shot of Halric staring up at the night sky at the end. It's wild how much emotionally charged stuff got packed into that zone alone. I found myself wiping away tears with some tissues more than once during today's video and the previous one.
Thanks for the entertainment as always, Two!
Also, as I'm sure someone'll have told you by now, (Edit: everyone apparently told you upon refresh of page, so i'll just remove the section i wrote on Ran'jit's mini-filias)
1:09:00 What a change of atitude towards Ardbert! But I'm glad, Ard deserves all the love!
About the end with Ran'jit, the "girls" he was talking about were the previous Minfilias. His story is pretty tragic when you think about it. When you first come to the Crystarium, you learn the other incarnations of Minfilias were protected and trained by the Eulmorean army, and all died in battle. Ran'jit was the captain of the army for years, and he personally trained all those Minfilias. He saw them as his daughters and was slowly destroyed by each of their deaths. When Vaultry became Eulmore's mayor and outlawed the hunt for sin eaters, and when Ryne was born, Ran'jit gave up the fight completely and decided the best way to save Ryne was locking her away and prevent her from ever going after the sin eaters, while waiting for the end of the First. Of course locking her away was very wrong of him, but knowing his past and his motivation makes his actions more understandable. When he was dying, he got to see the previous Minfilias, "his girls".
Ranjit feels more like a Metal Gear Solid character than someone who belongs in FF. And i wouldn't have it any other way.
Some say that the devs should've killed Thancred there, but I disagree.
I think the part that comes after when he meets Ryne and they all give her her name has a lot of value and would've been lost if Thancred wasn't there. His speech there was really good.
Also, if Thancred died there, Ryne probably wouldn't be able to move on from that for quite a while. Other scions would be in mourning as well, so even though that felt like a good heartfelt moment to give him a heroic death, I think it would've hindered the plot and character a lot moving forward.
"Intestinal Crank" is one of the scariest sounding attacks in the game lol.
So, the Meol Thing: When you first get to Eulmore, one of the parts where you check out and help others involves the singer and her 'master', and her wanting to cure her illness. When they can't, he mentions they 'ascend', and he would put in something for them to 'ascend'.
After all, no one leaves Eulmore. When their time has come, those who have lived in the city also eat Meol. they happily go and 'ascend'.
A whole town, full of people who are willing to do whatever Vauthry likes, who turn into various types of sin eaters, and who, if you give them the aether or flesh of those who are bad (like Kai-Shir), could easily heal from losing a bit of themselves, or not mind. Like that 'angel' didn't mind losing her wing…
Anyway!
The long awaited sequel is here!
I'm so glad Thancred didn't actually die. It's one thing for a distant dad to do a big gesture and die heroically. It's another to actually be there, show that you care everytime, everyday in small gestures.
His last speech when he's lying down, saying goodbye to the bright sky, to Minfilia is so sad. He knows Minfilia will really be gone this time, that he gave up the chance to even get to see her for the last time, but he knows she's listening before she's gone.
… about as genius as a rock… lol 🤣
26:15 I swear, I thought the entire time during the fight and cutscene that Thancred was right about to die.
I was so worried!!!
Ran'jit's story was such a tragic story. He was the only person in Eulmore that wasn't tempered by his master and stayed willingly. I wish they expanded his story a bit longer by either an echo or side missions. Imagine fighting against millions of sin eaters with the oracle whom you took her in as your own and trained. Seeing each of them die in battle to only see her reincarnated over and over for many decades. And train another knowing their ultimate fate again and again. That would make any man desperate. Personally, I don't blame Ran'jit for locking up the last Minfilia where he knows she will live. Then some stranger from another world steals her and put her through unnecessary danger. You get Ran'jit's desperation to save Minfilia.
