Music Producer Reacts: In The Balance (FFXIV Nald'thal Theme)

A Music Producer’s reaction and analysis of In The Balance – Nald’thal’s Theme from FFXIV Endwalker’s soundtrack.
Let’s talk about the music from this new boss fight, explained from the perspective of a Music Composer & Producer but in a way that everybody can understand.
I lost count of how many FFXIV music reaction videos I made thus far, but everytime I make one, I learn something new as this game’s music keeps innovating itself at every expansion.
Let’s see what Soken did this time to blow our minds!

  1. The more i hear Soken's music, the more i'm worried for FF16 music. If you compare this composing quality with what Hamauzu did (or Sakimoto, or Shimomura, or Mizuta), there's an abyss between them. I'm not talking about taste, there are a lot of very lazy techniques and clichés that Soken made to avoid difficult things (but which are more interesting).
I hope he will undertsand that making FF16's music is a huge different task from doing some MMO tracks without artistic direction.

  2. I thought it was cool that the song was supposed to be the thaumaturgy's prayer to Nald'thal, as they are a church dedicated to him.

As far as what themes they might do, if they're making the raid series revolve by the Eorzean calendar, we'd have Ishgard (final boss would be Menphina, the goddess of love and the moon) and Limsa Lominsa (final boss would be Oschon, god of mountains and vagrants).

  3. I have been looking forward to this video since I first heard the song. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into these. I've learned so much about music from you and a much deeper appreciation for the music that I was already jamming to.

  4. In the Balance is a really sad song to me, given the context of how insanely shitty life in Ul'dah is if you're poor. if you can't meet fortune in life, your only hope is that you can meet with it after…

  5. It caught me off guard in the raid when this started playing because it was so unexpected and just fit the theme of both a God with a dual personality, but also Ul'dah's patron deities so well.

I don't know how Sokken keeps nailing it like this, but FFXIV just has seemingly endless amazing music.

  6. Haha, there’s the Alex react video for the alliance raid! I literally was just thinking yesterday, “I wonder when Alex is going to make a video about that song…” Sure enough, you were already on it! Thanks for the video! Love your enthusiasm and your insights!
