Machinist NEEDS help! The WORST Job in FFXIV! [FFIXV 6.2]



Machinist is undeniably in the worst state of ANY job in Final Fantasy XIV right now, it has no mobility, no utility and is the LOWEST DPS in all of the game. This is absolutely worth being concerned about, unlike yesterday where I could go on and on about why Sage is strong the Machinist does NOT have strong points.

It’s weak in quite literally every single scenario outside of being put into a group of people performing exceptionally bad!!! The Machinist NEEDS help!

Machinist is one of the jobs I think actually is in trouble right now. Patch 6.2 brought some slight changes to automaton queen that I wanted to sit on and see play out and now the numbers are in, machinist is not okay.

But out the gate I’ve had the pleasure to speak with many of the top machinists in the world and I think it’s important to state that in a game like final fantasy 14 what job you’re taking into content is only one, and I’d argue one significantly smaller one part of what it takes to prog and clear content. Obviously social games like an MMO being sociable, kind, polite and someone that people want to be around are all important! But beyond that obvious point, a well played machinist, or rather a skilled player who has chosen to play machinist, is invaluable and will outperform the average player 99 times out of 100 completely separate from the job they chose to play.

Just look at party finder pf groups.

Moving on from that point though cause that is an important baseline, machinist is in this exceptionally weird state. It is objectively factually the worst of the ranged physical DPS.

It does not provide utility of any form outside of the obvious baseline utility all ranged physical DPS bring. None.

It does not have any mobility abilities, against the jobs in the same class bard has an exceptionally strong backstep that was buffed recently to have a far larger range, I’ve used it exhaustively when I progged on bard last expansion. Now it’s even better.

Then dancer has 3 fantastic dashes making it ridiculously mobile and able to clean up mistakes. Tracer dashes in final fantasy 14 remains one of the dumbest and most amazing things I’ve seen added to this game.

Now the rebuttal to that, which I think is a fair one to some degree, is you factually don’t need mobility abilities to dodge mechanics. True you don’t, you also don’t need air conditioning in a car but it’s sure nice to have when needed. Like ninja technically doesn’t need it’s passive movement speed or shukuchi and raiton technically doesn’t need to be 20 yards range but I can guarantee you if we took those away that would rightfully so cause them to raise hell.

Now the utility portion cannot be denied either.

Take dancer, dancer has 4 core utilities that I personally find invaluable. Curing waltz, a 600 potency AOE heal that is easier than ever with a coordinated gameplay aka stand behind the boss and wail on it, and that’s up literally every minute.

Sage has the ability pneuma that is also a quoted 600 baseline potency on 2 minute cooldown. Obviously Sage has more of a kit for healing, let’s not go down that frankly ridiculous rabbit hole, but another comparison is white mage’s cure 3. Dancer every minute gets to do this at no cost and I can tell you as a healer I do feel this.

But there’s more like the dancer with improvisation is a 500 potency of healing over time to the party. Which can then be weaved after for an at minimum 5% and up to 10% barrier. All of this in AOE.

All of this costs them no damage.

Oh yeah and obviously baseline 10% party mitigation.

To be direct, I most certainly do not want to see dancer nerfed. I think it’s a gorgeous job with clearly valuable utility. But tell me how is machinist meant to keep up with that? It can’t, it has quite literally no extra utility. None. You can’t even argue to compare utility because it does not exist.

Now what I hear is that machinist is like black mage and it’s utility is damage. On every single fight this tier outside of P5S proto carbuncle machinist is dead last. Absolute dead last in the entire DPS category.

So no, machinist’s utility is not damage. Also while machinist is dead last left in the dirt dancer is way ahead of it.

  1. There is only ONE job in FFXIV I genuinely think is in a tremendously weak position. That's machinist, the job I have in my channel art. It's a DPS that ONLY has the function of doing DPS and it doesn't even do that– OF COURSE I AM CONCERNED! It's been in a HORRIBLE spot since 6.0 dropped!!!!!

  2. I really do think MCH should be a top 5 dps in terms of damage dealing ability if they won't give it any kind of utility or debuffs. Now it should be at the number 5 spot in that top 5 to help balance the fact that it can keep its dps uptime for much longer than melees and casters but the state it's in is unacceptable for any content outside of normal dungeons and raids. I just want to have a dope Men in Black type cosplay while blasting guys with my big revolver while not feeling like I'm holding people back cause I'm not the best MCH ever :'(

  3. So easy to make MCH better but the devs for some reason are slacking off hard. MCH should be in top 5 dps period. Just some simple examples would be make flamethrower 3x more potent at least, make hypercharge like bloodwetting would be sick, make wildfire debuff the enemy for 15s, make queens first attack stun the target for 5 seconds automatically, and maybe have a personal shield ogcd? Just tossing out some ideas. I don't want it to be OP, just want it to be on par with other "selfish DPS". Oh and can we call the personal shield Edgar's Edge 🙂

  4. All I hear is, "from a hardcore standpoint this class sucks." I personally say that the point most people are aiming for (no pun intended) is clearing. If you can clear with the class, then there is nothing wrong with it. Now I WILL say this, I definitely play bard over machinist XD Not going to lie, most of this stuff flew over my head lol

  5. looking at the wrong graphs to get your information as far as dps goes. RDPS isn't what you go off of for several reasons one of which is that it gives a strong disadvantage to classes that don't provide buffs. that said MCH does need some reworks especially since they nerfed the automaton queen.

  6. MCH needs to be given utility. People don’t realize exactly why a pure Ranged DPS doesn’t work in this game. SAM and BLM both rely on other players playing well to have good uptime. They rely on the tank positioning properly and on other DPS not stepping on their toes causing them to disengage / move during certain mechanics. BLM also relies on people to Aetherial Manipulate to during certain mechanics to not lose DPS. MCH doesn’t have those problems.

    MCH doesn’t care where you tank, MCH can adjust without losing uptime, also unlike utility classes MCH isn’t reliant on other people playing well to receive a good RDPS rating.

    MCH is a completely self reliant DPS with no movement limitations. That simple concept doesn’t work in this game. You have to make it somehow reliant on other players like every other job is, otherwise it’s going to be a toggle between being useless in organized groups or making other jobs useless in organized groups.

  7. I really think MCH should be up somewhere behind BLM and SAM but above the rest of the ranged jobs and even some of the melee with utility like RPR or DRG. It really makes no sense, they act like the mobility is such an advantage when it's the least mobile ranged and does the least if all are equally optimized. I genuinely don't understand what the devs are thinking with MCH, it's had the same issue for so long and they're reworking DRG over it, even reworking AST over it doesn't make sense when AST is very strong, just clunky.

  8. I think the main issue with MCH is they don’t have any utilities, give them a unique utilities I think they would be alright. Give them like a trick attack equivalent, expedient equivalent, let automaton Queen also emit panhaima…. Just throwing out some ideas of unique utilies that would help raise the class value abit instead of dps because it doesn’t fall in a role where dps is the most important aspect.

  9. Hi. just a quick heads up I would consider looking at the ADPS and the NDPS stats for Machinist the tier and you will see that in terms of personal damage it is doing quite nice. It is just a problem of the other two Ranged dps classes offering so much damage to the party in the form of buffs that they pass it up in RDPS everytime.

Long time machinist main here, I wouldn’t consider myself in the top 1% of machinist players but I do consider myself above average and I for one don’t feel like we need that much utility , we should be that selfish big damage dps so some ideas would be 1. Buff wildfire , it’s just so awkward and doesn’t feel satisfying , there should be more reward for stacking a bunch of abilities before it goes off so they should have a higher damage amplify. 2. Buff to the 1 2 3 combo , either lower their CD a bit or some higher potencies. 3. AOE buff, flame thrower and auto crossbow should feel like your mowing down enemies buff they feel a bit lack luster , I think some number changes here would do really well, these are just some ideas Iv had

  11. I personally believe that the main problem with machinist is, the arbitrary rules that are set by classes archetypes and machinist own identity at this point. If you want to keep the selfish dps identity and make it a GOOD class (not just viable) SE has to make away with the basic rules that melees deal more dps than casters/Phys range and casters do more dps than Phys ranged (course blm breaks the rule but blm is justified by how intricate learning a fight with blm is). Maintaining MCH without a raid buff but buffing it in dps to a point where it competes in raid dps makes machinist do more dps than a melee (still not higer rdps but higer personal dps) and that is rule that apparently SE and possibly the community itself doesn't wanna break. You can already hear it: Why would i play Reaper that is the lowest melee in dps if machinist that is ranged AND has no cast time, with a rotation that is litterally macroable if the fight is 100% uptime, does more damage?
    IDK to me SE has to change something about phys ranged as an archetype itself to justify changes like those. Or you go the boring way: Give machinist a raid buff, boom problem solved everybody happy besides the people that don't like having theur dps messed with by bad teammates.
    Idk man it's a lose lose situation. i'd rather machinist have casts if i'm honest

  12. Nothing new that MCH sucks from hardcore standpoint. I don't know why SE did not fix it.
    But I play it nevertheless. It's not my mistake, if SE can't balance it good enough. :C
    I won't change my mainclass just because of that. But to be honest I hope that they buff it soon, because it of course sucks in raids. :/

  13. Something need to change with there job tax perception because MCH has the mobility tax but DNC has 3 charges of the best dash, who cares if you can walk when you have 3 chances of dash out of stuff…

    Personally I would like to see MCH working like in Pvp with these fast cast time where you can still move but slowed.

    This would even give MCH it own Identity because that's something no other Job has and then you can start to balance from that. And your big fck dmg button could be the sniper where you really need to stand still.

    I find a lot of MCH skills lackluster even from visuals, a lot of the other job got cool new toys and MCH got a saw blade that looks and sounds weak. And his burst dmg phase feels like button mashing (and hoping you have good ping, where in the meantime all other jobs got latency problematic skills removed/changed…) that looks really strange with all the jumping.

    Job phantasy wise it would be cooler if we had a gunslinger with that jumping pew pew animations and machinist who use heavy equipment and gadgets. But it feels like they stuff everything in there with no focus job phantasy at that point.
