New Happy strat got a name, "Happy Rambles". Could be another name for the weekly Q&A.
Good video. I don't agree with all what you say since a lot is just from a hardcore perspective, but this was a good GENERAL perspective, and I agree highly. I've said for multiple expansions now the Relic needs to start in X.0Y and the first Exploration Zone in X.1Z. We need more stuff to do that isn't hardcore or one-and-done content or stuff 3-5 expansions old that we've probably already done if we cared to.
It drove me crazy trying to explain to people how so many cool thing in DW are coming like 1/3rd through the expansion! Its nuts! The Dawn Trail we're excited for isn't at launch, its well into 2025! I got the jobs I wanted to play to cap and peaced out in month 1, the value for my sub isn't in the game yet and I think thats bonkers
I'm really getting tired of this long wait for content, especially mid-tier stuff. On top of that, after six months of trying, I still can’t get a house because of this lottery nonsense. The advice to just "unsub and play something else" feels so odd, why create a game dynamic where you enjoy it briefly only to be pushed out again? It’s a frustrating cycle, and honestly, at this rate, it almost feels like quitting would make more sense then to wait and return, pure nonsense take by the dev's. Smaller mmos and games have more content than this shit at times.
Thank you for the nuanced point of view, Happy. I agree with a lot of it, but people in the comments are being absolutely overdramatic, as usual:
1) People make it sound like DT is uniquely bad, even though expansions were always content light until x.2. Bozja was introduced in 5.2, 5.1 didn't have anything besides TEA. Eureka was introduced in 4.2, 4.1 only had UCOB. They hail SB/SHB as being the best expansions ever and DT being awful, but DT would arguably have MORE because of the chaotic raid. The game hasn't changed, the novelty just wore off and you got through your content backlog.
2) DT is scheduled to have the MOST content out of any expansion released so far. Adventuring foray, variant, criterion, lifestyle content, ultimates, deep dungeon, a new limited job AND new content types like chaotic raids. It basically has all the content types introduced in the 3 previous expansions and then some more. Any criticism of DT's content schedule that doesn't acknowledge those simple facts is at best incomplete, at worst ignorant and/or made in bad faith.
3) People say they have nothing to do because of a lack of long term/grinding content. First off: Both Bozja and Eureka still exist, if you haven't delved deeply into both of these, I can't take your criticism seriously. But even if you did, consider this: When you had the diadem, people complained. With eureka, people complained that it was too long. With Bozja, still, people were complaining. People complained that the relics took too long to grind. They experimented with new content types in EW and made the grinds much shorter, and guess what, people complained that it was now gone! The reality is that the current game design is a result of previous player feedback, and even if they changed it overnight to be how YOU like it, people would still be complaining. FF14 has a niche as a MMO that produces high quality, polished content in an episodic way and respects your time. I'm all for content diversity, but adjust your expectations, and realize that just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. If you want a grindfest that consumes your life, there's plenty of options out there. OSRS is free, try it out.
Would I like to have more side content in x.0/x.1? Sure, so long as the quality is there and the game design doesn't become intrusive. Everybody wants more content. If players want to have that conversation, then you can have it, just make sure that it's nuanced and based on actual facts. Unfortunately, all I see is poorly thought out, flippant gamer rage.
I want to see CC and Rival Wings as daily roulettes too…… if each year or expansion got a new pvp map for each mode I'd die happy
And this comes form someone who only dabbles in pvp I don't even like it that much, but I do love my roulettes…… I'm just bored of the same old frontlines where I have to get in, instantly mute the DRK with 300 macros with chimes and then pray my wifi will let the other teams loasd fast enough for me to aim at them lol
Heres what i think ff14 needs to do. Besides obviously adding more content in the game.
They need to start making some of the maps more bigger in the older areas and get rid of so many fucking loading screens. This has already been done with a few maps and just needs to be done on a larger scale with some areas.
They need to add some sort of Adventurer Journal to do on the side like going back to old areas as a Vet player for treasure which can give some gil or etc. Maybe also get some Lore on areas in there, im sure there would be people who would love this. Add Jumping puzzles into the world that could lead to some rewards doesnt have to be anything crazy but imagine your exploring and you come across a jumping puzzle and do it and u get like some dungeon gear in it or materia or maybe just a secret area that u can only get to by doing this. The overworld needs things in it BADLY its insane as a new player to go into these areas and all u will see is maybe a few other new players and thats it and even as a Vet player it feels pointless to even go to those old areas unless your gathering.
Combat needs to be reworked on a whole not just some tweaks or 1-2 skills redone and be like hey classes now have their own thing.
Ul'dah, Gridania, Limsa need some like redesign maybe a bit bigger to house the need for more players camping in them. God forbid going into limsa these days on some servers and this could help remove some FPS issues for people.
Characters need to like get older. Im tired of this bullshit SE is doing with not wanting to age them so that people might not know who they are like if u play the story u will know and if a player chooses to skip the story OBVIOUSLY they dont care so why does it matter. Not saying they need to look fucking 20 years older but its insane alisaie or aplh arent even slightly taller then what they were in ARR.
Character Customization should get alot more stuff added. Im talking about more faces, Facial Hair not being locked to faces, Maybe some body options? like You could be a more muscular Elezen or maybe a less bulky Roe. Almost EVERYONE in ff14 looks exactly the same but with different hair sometimes. And it think they could even let you choose a walking/run/sprint animations. At this point its insane that everyone looks the same, runs the same whats next we all shit the same? This doesnt have to be anything crazy but they could add miqote walk/run for another race and vice versa, This shouldnt touch races having their own varation of emotes like sitting and etc that should stay the same it wouldnt be right to see and Roe doing the cat squat.
Im sure there are other things that can be done but these are at least some of the issues that i personally think SE should tackle in 7.0
I've been playing since just before Stormblood, and admittedly I'm a weirdo who artificially gives myself more to grind by having alt characters (not just jobs) and having been very selective about what new kind of activities I dabble in…
But other than that, ever since SB, I've generally been perfectly fine using the roulettes and other long term but ultimately low-reward activities. I play multiple characters concurrently a lot less since Endwalker and so I began to branch out to compensate. In DT I've been tiding myself over by leveling the trusts, leveling alt jobs on my main through that and side quests and deliberately keeping roulettes to getting full tomestone gear which does admittedly take a wee bit of time.
I don't even do anything particular with that gear, I don't really mess with extremes or savage… so maybe this entire situation doesn't really apply much to me. I really like exploration zones and the relic grinds too, but overall I've managed to tide myself over in previous expansions while waiting for them to arrive through that.
This time however, just to bring in another perspective on this, what has made it somewhat less enjoyable is how the jobs have developed over time (how increasingly barren they get at lower levels) and how power creep has made lower level dungeons even less engaging, and frankly how ARR and HW loaded roulettes are because of the free trial and presumably a lot of players getting filtered in early game (I'm beyond tired of the CT raids).
I'm a DRK main and it's been kind of miserable praying for any potentially decent changes in 7.1 not just to performance but even more importantly just playfeel.
I'm not quite as dour on the jobs wholesale as many are, but there's definitely issues and I think the 2 minute meta needs to go ASAP…
All this to say; even those of us who are uber casuals who could make do with the basic weekly grinds just as a framework to incentivize playing the game for its own sake (just for fun, as it were) might very well start to feel the strain after a while because of the aforementioned longer-standing issues that are just languishing. They've done a lot to try and future proof the game, and it's not easy to find solutions to these problems, but they're kind of there just festering right now.
I still log in almost every day and still enjoy the game and have projects to get back to… but it gets demoralizing and sucks some energy out of me to feel this miasma of malcontent surrounding the game I love. I fear they can't just rely on casuals like me to compensate for the things missing that this video and that article is calling for. Not indefinitely.
Naw keep the tomestone option. It made hearing up alt jobs so much easier.
I literally only log in for a single roulette, check my retainers n' subs, then go back to do something else. Not even gpose hits the same when there's like… very little motivation in general.
I'm gonna sit here and wait until Yoshi-P just makes the relic quest Atma farm at 0.2 drop rate again so y'all would stop complaining that there's nothing to do and instead complain that you have to grind too much.
i just want to let you know that regardless of the tier I always end up crying so it won't be new to meeeeeeee
I hate the "there are other games to play" statement man, cause the problem with that is – people do go play other games. But then they don't come back.
I blame FF XVI dev cycle and SE that has been diverting all profit to fund useless crap. It's my headcanon, this is how I cope.
Man I do love the communities current obsession with the grass is greener on the other side. When asked what would make it worth they just describe some boring mindless grind that they want to be drip fed over weeks and months so they have a reason to play the game cause they didn't want to do insert content that already exist. Its crazy.
I hope Square does listen and waste dev time making some mindless drip fed slop so we can collectively decide that we hated it actually. And for them to not do it next expac and we can all collectively forget and decide 2 expac down the line that we actually want mindless slop again. repeat ad nauseum.
FF14 players wouldn't survive 2 weeks in Lost Ark progression.
The biggest issue I've found in XIV after trying out WoW is that XIV gives the player zero reasons to interact with the world and side quest. You get nothing of value from doing so except for some okay throw away stories that will never be canon to the MSQ. There's no real gameplay substance to anything you do until you start playing Extremes or Savage as everything before that is so simple and requires no thought or strategy beyond, just press the shiny button. And once you do get into that harder content, it becomes a game of hidden Simon Says, where if you don't know the pre-ordained action to take, you just die.
There's about 10% of the game that's an actual game to play, and the other 90% is walking from place to place to pick up junk and then read some text.
Meanwhile, while WoW won't ever win any awards for its writing, you're never expected to care that much beyond just giving you a reason to check out the world and do quests in it. The added benefit of being able to use your full kit even while doing quests and see your efforts rewarded with good gear for leveling and SOMETHING TO ACTUALLY DO WHILE WAITING ON DUNGEON QUEUES. FF actively punishes you for trying to do most anything while waiting on a dungeon because it might put you in a cutscene or it will try to pull you into a solo instance. WoW on the other hand, just lets you be and do you quests and actually feel stronger with your character the more abilities you get.
Paired with the blatant disregard of fan feedback from CBU3 about Poochie Lemutt, I have no interest in the game anymore as the only reason a large majority of people play, is for the story. And when you have to become an apologist for a horrible story with a terrible content release cycle that gives the vast majority of players literally nothing to do for months on end except repeat the same 4 fights ad nauseum, I don't see any criticism will be held in good faith ever again. Yoshi said he was tired of working on the game, good. He can simply let it die now that he's allowed these bumbling fools kill it for him.
I've quit the game for now. There's nothing in the foreseeable future that'll give me a good reason to come back atm. Maybe at the end of the expansion when everything is out, even then I have 0 interest in the current MSQ.
"we cant get the staff" says yoshi as cbu3 work on 2 other games at the same time.
I know they've said that it's not a simple fix, but if they could implement a proper collection system like WoW's transmog system, it would help encourage more running of content (both current and old) to collect glams. Sure, we have the glamour chest, but I filled that thing not long after they doubled the cap to 800.
I'm a casual player maybe above casual and I'll be honest there's not much to do when you don't have many friends to play with on the game lol
I just want more bozja type content 🙁
Bozja and Eureka gave me a reason to gear up, even as a non raider.
Hot take: Hildebrand needs to go. I’m sorry but FF14 is an MMO, not a visual novel. Resources should go to actual content. If they’re gonna double down on it – at the very least – add voice acting.
The game became stale and low IQ Square wants to keep the drought going. Stupidity of the highest order!
there is no new content for someone who does not raid
Hey chatGPT, summarize meHappy's video and create a suggestion for content release schedule in Microsoft Project planner.
A question about Unreal EX Trials. Why is there only ever one? I mean the fights are already designed and animated. So why can't we have, for example, 3 that cycle every week? Why do we only get one Unreal fight per patch, months of grinding the same fight every week with absolutely no variation.
It feels like a lot of content just gets abandoned after release.
I for one and happy for the time ive had to shove into Metaphor Refantazio (just finished at 90 hours)
Yoshi P mentioned like 30% more rewards than precious expansions, and I'd sincerely like to call bullshit till proven otherwise. Please be proven otherwise
Super unfortunate honestly, it's my favorite game and I really hope they figure it out.
The gap between 7.0 and 7.1 is 5 months, which is one month longer than the "traditional" cycle was in ARR -> ShB. We always had patches every 4 months and 2 years between expansions.
The real issue was the massive nine month gap between 6.5 and 7.0, I think. The expansion schedule going to 2.5 years was understandable during Covid but not so much anymore. Unless they were just trying to level set back to their old summer releases and will do that from now on, they need to hopefully get back to those 2 year gaps without 7, 8, 9 month gaps between the late patches and having to spread out all the other patches a little more. A 4 month wait was always just long enough to make you start to want more without feeling overlong, but even 5 months starts to strain patience.
Was so happy to see you comment on this. I had this exact conversation with some friends in discord in response to this article, and you absolutely nailed our thoughts. I truly don't think the content itself is the problem, of course there can be more and different things, but the release order is really holding things back. So yeah, well done, perfectly articulated in my opinion.
You will probably get a lot of hate from the toxic 14 fans that can't take any form of criticism towards their favorite game for making this video but I really do appreciate you coming out and talking about the real problems 14 has. As someone who have been playing this game for 6 years now (I have 8000+ hours) I finally decided to quit the game in DT. Absence of meaningful content, slow patch cycle and lack of innovation from the devs were the reasons why I decided to do so. I really do like this game and it will always have a special place in my heart but I simply can't take the same old same old anymore. I really hope SE realizes the potential and importance of 14 and shows it the respect it deserves so that I can come back to Eorzea in the future.
wtf is an allied society?
i thought 3 months was fine, but 4 months is just absurd. going from 12wks to 20wks is insane of nothing. it feels like nothing is happening. i finished most stuff in 1,5 months. and just been logging in to do reclears which is another mess. they gotta do smth about weekly loot as well
Ive always worried about (and I think I'm right) how the historical big success of this game (exacerbated by that WoW exodus) would inform a company like SE in the wrong way. It tells them that they are doing something right, and what a company like this does with that intel is say "ok, well done. how can we replicate this, but for cheaper?" And I think thats what we've seen them doing. Artistically they are still amazing, but their gameplay creativity and risk taking has completely been removed from the model. They dont have desire to build long-form content at all, because the steady trickle of short form content has proven to be enough to keep subs rolling. So they trim all the fat from their teams into only the bare minimum of what they need to hit this requirement. It's honestly a pretty rude way to treat an audience of loyal fans, some who have been paying monthly subscriptions for many many years.
I knew this expansion wouldn’t be as good with how good Shadowbringer and Endwalker were in story.
Dawntrail just wasn’t going to live up to that level of story. And I went in knowing that. Yet even still, I didn’t expect it to be that boring to the point I was actually skipping cutscenes. As a person who never skips any. It just didn’t have anything captivating. Wasn’t a fan of the babysitting Wuk Lamat in her journey. The thing with Sphene was too obvious that she was evil that it wasn’t a surprise.
And yea, with very little news and info. It’s difficult to stay excited about anything. Even the in game events have felt rather boring lately.
We need more things like crossover events. Or events like the Yokai Watch stuff where it’s long and actually requires better engagement. Treasure maps really need to change as it’s boring as it is and a bit too tedious for the rng. They could easily do more things like BA fights for more difficult alliance raids that aren’t a guaranteed victory and requires communication from groups to achieve victory.
this x.x6/8 thing mentioned is the mogtomes. It should definitely be something specific to the new expac like relics or field content beginning like you mentioned, but that is what they have put in that place to fill the content void prior to a new major patch coming.
I'm lucky in that I have tons of old content to farm still, but I hit endgame mid-endwalker. For people who've been playing for years…yeah, there's not a ton to do.
Not everybody wants to like grind fates for that mount or whatever else requires weeks of grinding
All this discussion of people not having anything to do meanwhile I haven't even gotten to Savage because of Submarines taking all the time XD
I think one of my biggest wants for this game is when we get a .1 patch for the love of god do Savage + criterion or SOMETHING, I think in a perfect world it would be Savage + Exploration content but that might be way too long, I never feel like my money is ever worth it unless I sub towars the middle of an xpac and that kinda sucks
For the first time I don't like an expansion in this game… Dawntrail really sucks… HW, SB were the best…
What problems did Abyssos cause? Genuienly asking. I only cleared the first two fights of that tier and then I quit the game because I was done with the frustration of trying to pug clear yet another tier. I didn't know there was an issue with that tier in the wider community.
Also relic weapons should start in x.05 or x.1. They should start early and be more interesting than the EW one. Bring back stuff like HW relic, that was so much more interesting and varied than hey trade 1500 tomes for 3 of this item. I loved Eureka though, but fuck Bozja/Zadnor.
