Let's Play Final Fantasy XIV (Part 20) [Final Fantathon]

The most anticipated and requested game of Final Fantathon, Final Fantasy XIV has finally arrived. Beloved by so many, FFXIV has become a world wide phenomenon and has transcended its own namesake in many ways. Final Fantasy XI was a well made MMO, but it didn’t capture the hearts of so many fans in the same way, so I hope to gather through my playthrough what makes this game so special in the hearts of its dedicated fans.

  1. I played FF14 1.0 for about two weeks. Did not get very far, but I have some strong praise for a few aspects.
You did not have to take any quests to become new classes, and could simply do so at any time by purchasing the level 1 weapon/tool; you also could start the game as a gatherer or crafter class.
Crafting was a very indepth process. You had to assemble components of an item rather than just raw materials; instead of Iron Ingot + Elm Lumber + Feather = Spear, it was you had to make a spear tip, a shaft, and assemble them with a feather. It was a more drawn out, expensive process, but you felt truly accomplished.
Gathering was a full on mini-game. You had to go up to a harvesting node, then make guesses at where the materials were. You also didn't know what you were getting, although experience and levels could change this over time.
A bonus and demerit, was that High Quality went from +1 through +4, for all items. This however was atrocious for inventories, especially as a gatherer.
Armor and weapons were expensive, time consuming to acquire, and did a lot more for you. A simple suit of armor that just gave Defense, no stat boosts at all, would be worth thousands of gil. Just having decent armor at all was a huge deal early game.
Combat was interesting in that you didnt' have an auto-attack, but a standard attack which was manually queued up; but they also dealt significantly better damage.
There were many flaws, it was not a friendly game to step into, but it had a ton of heart and ambition. It was improved in 95% of areas with ARR, but there's always something to look back on to think 'maybe this could have survived'.

  2. That GameStop story was something but it was moving around the employees that led me to stop going to GameStop. Places gotta realize we like familiar faces and familiar faces can sell us more than a random person
